Does nobody like Angels Take Manhattan...?
I did, although I felt the Pond's farewell could have been done so much better. They were with the Doctor for two and a half seasons (well, Amy was, at least) and they're gone in a 'blink and you miss it' moment. I can kind of see why they did it - what with blinking being how the Weeping Angels get you - but, yeah, it could have been handled way better than that, and the Doctor seemed to get over it pretty quick.

You know I love that one...

I can see people not liking the whole "You can never go back to 1930's New York ever... or 1960's New York... or any other time really, because reasons".

He didn't even mention them to Clara... the opposite end of the scale is Tennant post-Rose being Oh my god shut the fuck up mopey, but he could at least have talked about them. Felt cheap.

Both Series 6 & 7 have their flaws, the break kinda in worked in 6 because of the River storyline but the gap in 7 was just far too long

I didn't even noticed that but, yeah, whether the writers meant for Eleven to seem so cold and heartless or just shut off to avoid the emotional hurt, they could've at least had him mention the Ponds to Clara.

My biggest problem with Season 6 is that it started seriously kneecapping Amy as a character. And I started to appreciate Rory a hell of a lot more, but it really felt like that was happening less because Rory was evolving (although he was, and in a way I enjoyed) but more at the EXPENSE of Amy's character.

The worst example being the "divorce" that opened Series seven. The set-up and execution for their breakup was just bullshit, and it absolutely took away from the positive aspects that made Amy a great companion. And not in a way that made her more complex or interesting. It just detracted, period.

The Series 7 episode I liked the most when I first saw it was probably The Bells of St. John. I didn't like A Nightmare in Silver initially, but it grew on me after a couple more watches. I think that might be my current favorite of the bunch.

I really like Nightmare in Silver, Matt Smith does such a great job of switching between the Doctor & Mr Clever that it seems effortless for him but would floor other actors.

Angels Take Manhattan would be an absolute classic if the Doctor and River had woken up in that graveyard alone.

As it is... it's still pretty fucking fun. The Angels plan is actually super inventive and it's nice to see a return to the "zap you back in time" Angels we all know and love.

Actually I'm still not a fan of the Mr. Clever thing. Matt played it as well as he could but I just didn't like the concept. I like theme park setting, Webley, and Porridge. It's a very unique atmosphere.

I can see people not liking the whole "You can never go back to 1930's New York ever... or 1960's New York... or any other time really, because reasons".

That explanation actually works in-universe, though. It wasn't asspull. It's been established that time traveling and changing the same events too much will make it impossible to return. That's why the Time War is time locked in the first place; the Daleks and the Time Lords kept abusing time travel to change the outcomes of battles.

I wouldn't say the Doctor got over Amy and Rory quickly.

He locked himself up in the sky in Victorian London for who knows how long between Angels Take Manhattan and The Snowmen. He also kept Amy's glasses.

The Doctor was pretty broken up at seeing their tombstone, but seemed to be in slightly better spirits (temporarily, maybe) after reading Amy's note on the page he tore out of the book.

Why was Porridge emperor of the galaxy again? That would have made a cool twist if it had been employed in the middle of the episode; while the Doctor is playing chess, have Porridge warp himself and Clara to safety, and have Clara appeal to his bored, exhausted side to be the hero his duty won't allow him to be, rather than nuking the planet.

Should have been a two-parter. I love Mr Clever, but the Doctor's internal battle shouldn't have been the crux of the entire episode. Hell, exploring the emperor's desire to hand off his responsibilities to someone else could have been a cool concept if it was actually in the plot itself, rather than a weird epilogue.

It was worse then that, there's nothing to stop the Pond's leaving New York. Or even the Doctor visiting without the TARDIS. A couple of episodes later he gets stranded at the North Pole while the TARDIS is at the South Pole, why not drop in to Manhattan on your trip southwards.

Or he could send them a message to meet up in, like, Cardiff or somewhere if he really can't go anywhere near New York.

I can handle 'time travel just works that way' but that was the height of Timey-Wimey bullshit. The only way he could never see them again would be if he was prevented from travelling to Earth for the entire second half of the 20th century, which, spoilers, he does a lot.

They should have just decided to adopt a kid and chose to stop travelling for good.

He got over them in the space of the credits and the title sequence.

It would've been nice to see a bit more 'distraught Doctor' on-screen.

Up there with the likes of A Good Man Goes to War or The Doctor's Wife or even The Girl Who Waited in Series 6?

I thought A Good Man Goes to War was the same kind of rushed, concept-over-narrative nonsense that Moffat wrote into The Wedding of River Song - maybe not AS bad, but not a good episode much less a classic.

I think I have to re-watch God Complex. Everyone loves that ep but I can't remember a single thing about it. In fact, I'm pretty sure I was falling asleep trying to watch that one, so maybe a revisit is in order.

AGMGTW seemed weird at the time, since it was supposed to be the Doctor's lowest point (which is clearly false) and had a collection of his best allies, most of which had never been seen before. Seems less strange in hindsight since Vastra, Jenny and Strax keep getting parts.

God Complex is great. Rita was one of the best non-companions ever.

Yeah that was kind of shit. It was almost as if Moffatt was trying to pull a Journey's End whilst realizing he hadn't introduced any memorable characters apart from Amy, Rory & River.

"Oh look, that pirate and inconceivable 1940s space pilot... wooo :\"

Should've got Captain Harkness back. Damn that US Torchwood abomination.

Yeah I'm watching it now, it's not so bad in retrospect but yes - I forgot until half way through we only met Vastra/Jenny/Strax etc here - which would have improved it.

Oh and River's BULLSHIT of the Doctor's greatest and his darkest hour, what overblown tripe. If she knows the Doctor so much, how would she put this above, THE TIME WAR. Or any other actual finale. And her showing up with "WELL THEN SOLDIER, HOW GOES THE DAY". No need to be a wanker reading poems, speak like a normal person.

But I am liking S6/S7 more on rewatch.

At least we can agree that Series 5 was utterly fantastic, yes?

Not a bad episode in it. Even WWII Daleks and Silurian double weren't too bad. And it had some true greats like 11th Hour, Amy's Choice, Vincent and the Doctor and the Pandorica Opens.

Best Season of NuWho 100%.

I kind of liked Victory of the Daleks. The Silurian stuff was just terrible though.

I'd say the best Series was 4. Midnight. Turn Left. Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead. The Stolen Earth/Journey's End. The Waters of Mars. The End of Time.

What other season can compare to that lineup? RTD went out with a fucking bang.

Yup would definitely agree with this. Best stories and best Doctor & companion duo

I think you're overrated.

My personal rating of the NuWho series.

1. Season 5
2. Season 2
3. Season 4
4. Season 7
5. Season 1
6. Season 3
7. Season 6

4 > 3 > 5 > 6 >7 > 2 > 1

And about series 5. The opener is legendary, the finale 2 parter is great, Amy's Choice is awesome, Vincent and the Doctor is as moving a character piece you'll ever find in the Moffat era, but I think the Angels 2 parter is a bit overrated, as is The Lodger (which is not bad, but not great.) The rest are filler.

People liked Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone enough to overrate it? I thought most people hated that two parter.

Also, there seems to be a theme in Series 5 and 6 where mostly average/decent two-parters get big game-changing endings or cliffhangers. The Silurian two-parter? Rory dies, gets absorbed by the Crack and erased, the Doctor finds out that the cause of the Crack is his TARDIS blowing up. The Ganger two-parter? Amy's pregnant, been kidnapped by the Silence and the Amy we've been traveling with was a Ganger.

The Flesh two-parter was well below average for me. It was essentially the "No! Shoot him! He's the real ____!" trope for two episodes.... and the finale couldn't even be a two-parter. Insane.

I just watched it like 2 days ago, and I think it's fantastic. Don't get the hate at all.

So the local library is having a Doctor Who 50th party on Saturday. The time is from 2-4pm. Deciding on if I should go or watch the 50th at home and not meet new people.

so pain, many emotion....

That would have been perfect if they filmed it.

I remember hearing about an unfilmed ending and thinking "Yeah, but most deleted scenes are deleted for a reason. I'm curious, but it was probably the right call."

Then I saw the storyboard animation and I was like "Goddammit."

List time again!

Started with Rose, but couldn't really go back to a large number of RTD episodes after Moffat. So, I guess my ranking would be 5 > 6 > 7 > 4 > 2 > 1 > 3 > that year of specials.
