Does a console Name and Logo really matter *that* much?

I was just reminded how cool the Sega Saturn name and logo is in another thread:-

We all know how it went in the long run... :(

The point is that i don't think that name and logo etc really make that much of a difference to a console in the end, if the console/maker is doing most of the other things right.

Xbox 360? PlayStation Infinity? Nintendo Revolution?

Does anyone really give a shit as long as they have great games we want to play?

It's like band names, at first they sound crap, but then they get worn in:-

Radiohead, Oasis, U2 :lol , Coldplay are all terrible band names, but you couldn't imagine anything else for them now...

Both Xbox and Playstation are names that I thought were jokes when I heard them first, but now they seem right...

Just my 2 cents :lol

No, I don't think it matters. And I think people that explain away the GC's failure because it was a purple square are kidding themselves. I don't think it would have mattered jack shit if people thought the games were more compelling.

sp0rsk :-
well, product design is rather important, look at the gamecube.

That could easily be countered;-

"product design ISN'T that important, look at the xbox' :lol

i do agree that the console's industrial design is important in size and immediate attraction, but like names and logo's a lot of that comes down to subjective taste...

i want my console to fit in my entertainment centre, in another thread people were jizzing over the Panzer Dragoon Xbox, which I thought was grotesque :lol

But if my console doesn't fit in my entertainment centre and it has must-have games, i won't mind much.

Of course all these things are cumulative, if it has a crap name, crap logo and looks like crap, and most people agree on that... i.e. it's universally crap then the marketing people will have their work cut out :lol

I think that's why MS leaked Xbox 360, so that people would become accustomed to it before they 'announced' it...

In which case it's worked somewhat, i hated it the same way as I hated Xenon, but it doesn 't seem quite as bad as at first... but it's still goddam bad :lol

youd be suprised how many guys out there wont get a gamecube because of how "gay" it looks.

at the debut of a system appearance matters.

Dreamcast was a joke for a console name and it worked, it grew on the public...i wanted Katana but hey what can you do :D

DCX

A console could look like a log of shit and peeps would still buy it if they could get and play the most/best games on it.

I was part of a focus group to help decided the name for a new at the time Sega console. On the list was Dreamcast, and that got knocked off fairly quickly. What was left was not very impressive. What won out? The fucking Odyssey. I tried telling these other kids (I was easily the oldest person there) that it was already the name of a super old console, but no one seem to listen or care.

The name which I liked the best from the list, btw, was Nexium.

It's certainly behind library quality/depth and marketing as a factor, but it's definitely ideal to have an appealing name, logo, and design theme.

wow.

anyway beyond a few people like that, the gamecube has a really amazing design from the gui to the logo. ps2 is pretty good, but is to much like every thing else to really stand out and the logo is awful.

Console wars on message boards are even worse than the shcool yards.

No console wants to be the one kid out there with the stupid name, or the fat controller, or the non-masculine color, or the console with the unicorn on it's front.
don't do it

It just makes them too big a target.
