Does anyone else hate modern commercials?

Who's with me?!

  • I'm with you!

  • I'm hungry and Uber Eats sounds like a great idea right about now. (Not with you)

I'm watching the Ravens dismantle the Steelers and every single commercial follows this formula...

Multimillionaire who made their money in a different field, gets paid millions of dollars by a new company, to sell a product that the American public doesn't need.

The Manning brothers (Peyton and Eli) are making FanDuel commercials so that the kid working at Planet Fitness can risk a percentage of his paycheck on sportsball.

Mathew McConauhey is trying to sell some food product that you just know brown and blue collar people don't need.

Does anyone remember 20 years ago when it was considered career suicide for an "A list" actor to appear in a commercial? And I swear to God every commercial is from the same 7 giant companies.

What happened? Am I just getting old or is there something Black Mirror about modern marketing?

When were commercials ever enjoyable? Sure every now and then one might be catchy and seeing some old commercial might trigger nostalgia but at the end of the day they have always been nothing but annoying interruptions to what you are wanting to watch. So I don't hate them any more than I ever have.

I think they're getting worse than "annoying". They're sinking deeper into Dantes seven circles of hell.

Amazon put a fan on TV after the Ravens Steelers game. He was getting an Amazon font inspired logo of Lamar Jackson that read "LAMAZING". The 5 postgame sportsball commentaters were talking to the dude as his wife was needling him.

WHAT IS HAPPENING?!?!

I watch sports through streaming sites like Gotham Sports for the Knicks and SNY for the Mets and they tend to play the same commercials over and over and over again. I must have seen these commercials both dozens of times over the course of a few games and they both drive me up the wall;

Christ, how annoying is Jennifer Coolidge and that stupid fake voice of hers?

October in the 90s was a pretty special time for commercials, especially if you were a kid during that time. I think most 90s kids here have warm nostalgic memories of evening Nickelodeon shows, with Halloween themed commercial breaks.

Creative bankruptcy comes when you can't use stereotypes anymore, can't offend anyone, can't make fun of anything, basically just don't have any real creative.

Using celebs is a shortcut to give a product "character".

I can't even remember the last time I watched a commercial on TV, even on YouTube I get around it some way, are they as bad as this gem?

You remembered that, at least. Modern stuff, at least from the little I've seen (try to avoid live TV), is the unmemorable sort of bad.

The last advert I remember is Go Compare. For those round the world, this annoying prick appeared in 2009:

At least they put him through a car crash as some catharsis for the poor sods that had to put up with it.

I'm sure there was one where he wasn't allowed to sing, but I can't find it.

Fuck this advert:

Also; any of these fucking yodeling ads that infest sports coverage! (Order now for half time).

Oh and whilst we're at it ... 'Evony The King's Return' or 'Last War Survival'. Fake game ads on Youtube!

Give me a no nonsense advert like this:

They're largely soulless now. Often afraid of offending or focused on getting to the point too quick for folks with no attention span.

The Cadbury's dementia one got me the other day though. Their In The Air Tonight one was great too.

Budweiser's "Frogs" & "Wasssup" ads are probably the most memorable.

Then Honda's "The Cog".

For the more "shocking" / funny stuff. 'Tarrant On TV' showing foreign ads was great.

I pay for YouTube Premium to avoid commercials and I hate Google but I hate commercials. Also, I watch a lot of YouTube, with most of it on a smart TV so I can't block the ads.

There's a weird sense of humor in a lot of commercials that I can't put into words and it's not exactly new. Someone is acting foolish or a situation is awkward. I can't stand it. It's wasting time. They're afraid to be sincere! In general, I wish media was more pithy.

I hate the number of them. Watching YT is becoming a chore. Depending on who you watching and how long the video is, you're going to get three sets of ads from the player and at least one sponsored ad in the actual video. I'm watching less long form as a result.

What happened?
Actors realized they were missing out on big money, and slowly the taboo went away.

As for ads coming from the same companies, idk. I've seen too many ads from too many companies whom I would never buy anything from. There's a lot of people advertising shit. I think there needs to be a culling, if anything.

In the UK every advert, no matter what it's for - washing powder, chewing gum, life insurance, whatever - will have morons dancing around. Everyone is dancing. I would love to see them dance off the edge of a cliff.

No one shall be brought before our LORD David Bowie without the true and secret knowledge of the Photoshop. For in that time, so shall He appear.
It just really makes me realize how good 80s-2000s commercials were by comparison. Shit, at these those commercials had bespoke jingles and creative concepts.

We hit a turning point at “HEAD ON APPLY DIRECTLY TO THE FOREHEAD HEAD ON APPLY DIRECTLY TO THE FOREHEAD HEAD ON APPLY DIRECTLY TO THE FOREHEAD” and we’ve only gone downhill since then.

Ads nowadays are mostly crap, but what I hate with a passion are all the dietary supplement ones that almost outright lie that taking them will cure you of a condition. Example:

"Oh no, I'm always so tired"
"Why don't you take magnesium supplement ABC? I take it as well and I'm not tired anymore!"
"OMG, I feel much better already"

Meanwhile you being tired can be a legitimate medical condition that needs to be checked.

Yes, i can't stand them now, even more than in the past, they keep getting longer and longer and whatever your watching, shorter and shorter.

Commercials or psy ops are the main reason i cut the cable 16 years ago. I don't appreciate well funded researched scientific psychological manipulative intrusive messages in my household. It's ironic that their intention works the opposite.
It's insulting to my intelligence. Fuck off

Modern ads in a nutshell

gpyf24ilm2c21.png
The ad agencies have been pushing this for the past couple of decades. It's full-blown anymore because this is what they think the general public want.

Almost always the same narrative, with the same two demographics. It never feels genuine and always pushed to feel accepted as a norm and comes off very heavy handed.

Nobody wants to show a straight, same-race (ESPECIALLY white) couple anymore, even though those make up probably 90%+ of all couples on the planet. It's either a gay/lesbian couple, or if they're straight it better be interracial.

Those Uber eats commercials are awwwwwwful

But by far the worst in sports is the gambling ads. These ads should be illegal first of all, like cigarettes, but it’s not just that they are bad. Lots of yelling, not funny, Kevin Hart, it’s just horrible.
