I think they're just awesome. They've made organizing and finding files so incredibly easy. They also make finding new movies books and movies a great time. Would you guys consider this a web 2.0 feature or were you guys using tags back in windows 2000?

Wut? That's an apostrophe.

But yea I try to use tags whenever I can nowadays. It all started with Lightroom 2 and now I use tags whenever applicable. Did Windows pre XP and older versions of MacOS use/support tags?

Edit lol. Oh. Member titles aka tags. No. Sorry fellas.

I wish we had one of those again. If you're a rational poster it's generally really hard to get one otherwise.

Regular members ftw.

But in all seriousness, tags can be pretty useful, both online websites and offline for files. What sucks is when I transferred all my music over from my old HDD to the one in my new PC, the tags for track 1 of every album I ripped to my old PC disappeared. The files are still named correctly, but whenever I play them they just show up as "Track 1" with all other information unknown. Every album. Only the first track. Arg.

Care to explain what they are? I've seen the option to use them but never knew what they were.
Say you have five photos of your niece in your family album folder. You tag it with "niece's name" then whenever you search your files or hdd with her name those pics will come up as results even if that's not the filename. Really handy for me as a designer to designate multiple tags to one file. Such as red minimal grunge etc.

Absolutely love tags. Wish Apple would get off their ass and build better metadata support (that's already there!) into the Finder in Mac OS X.

And yeah, nothing better than being able to find pics in my collection of "naked Japanese girls with sexy lips wearing glasses" at a moment's notice!

I don't tag anything. Should I be tagging files or something? Gmail has tags?

I guess it is useful for finding stuff on some sites, but mostly I hate them for polluting my google searches with results I don't want

I also thought this thread was about gaf tags

Tags really go to the core of linguistics and identify the nouns and adjectives around which the rest of the language is formed. This is basically the most bare bones form of communicating what you are interested in, and it's probably how animals also communicate. It's how early men used to communicate as well. Just look up a decent tag list on a good youtube video and tell me that's not neanderthal speak.

Email, your images, your bookmarks, your files, everything!

Bookmarks for example. Why manually manage bookmarks, putting them into specific folders, keeping them organized, and worrying what bookmarks you have saved well? Use a service like Google Bookmarks or Delicious, and then when you're bookmarking, say, NeoGAF, you tag it with "forum, videogames, community". Then, when you need to find your bookmark, it's now in all of those places without any additional work from you!

You now know what you must do to prolong this thread OP. People are losing interest at an alarming rate.

An edit before page 2 should suffice.

I'm not going to lie, I was a bit disappointed when this thread wasn't started by a mod. I can't believe I missed out on the last one.

But more to the point of this actual thread, I tried to use tags for various things, but then I stopped. So I guess it never actually reached its true potential for usefulness.

don't worry about it your sexy avatar makes up for lack of tag

Is there any library-type of app for Windows which would let me classify videos and other files with tags?
I need to sort my porn collection

I have OCD like no other so I have file tree structures and tags everywhere. It makes me sleep at night. Every time I see someone's desktop full with useless icons I start hyperventilating....:D

I miss my tag of yore, I think it said "greatest puns all around with this guy" or something like that.
