Does anyone still have a Sega Gamegear?

I remember the handheld being a battery hog. Well times have changed and so the batteries have as well. How long will a Gamegear last using a Duracel Ultra or Energizer Titanium or Energizer Lithium or any other battery for that matter?

Gamegear? You might as well play fucking Tiger games. Get with the times.

3-6 hours I think. The one I bought I got batteries for and it lasted for about 2 hours, then I got tired of them and shoved them in my Super Scope instead. That thing eats batteries pretty well too.

I still have two of them. I remember getting no more than 6 hours out of the batteries.

Yep. I have a couple of Game Gear units, bought them on eBay about 5 years ago.

The reason I picked one up was because I enjoyed playing Majors Pro Baseball on a friend's Game Gear. I'm a sucker for early 90's baseball games.

The first unit I got with some games is the Sega Sports bundle with World Series Baseball and is blue. I was leery of buying used hardware from eBay, and my fears weren't unfounded. The screen shimmered pretty badly when pressing the buttons. I WONDER IF THAT IS WHY THEY DECIDED TO SELL IT. I just powered it up a few minutes ago and the LCD is all but dead.

My second unit is standard black, the screen had a couple of peck mark flaws on it that are annoying and I had to use some foil in the battery compartment since one of the springs was missing, but at least it works fine.

Anyway, Majors Pro Baseball is pretty much the only game I played much since the Gear's crappy screen gets on my nerves. Once I got ahold of GBA and NGPC this shit stayed in the closet permanently.

Games I have:
Majors Pro Baseball: Yay.
World Series Baseball: Shit.
Sonic 2: Yay, Sonic.
Sonic Chaos: Yay, Sonic.
Ms. Pac-Man: Yay, doesn't suck like the original GB version.
Wimbledon Tennis: It's... some tennis. Average.
Winter Olympic Games (Lillehammer 94): I dug the console versions and this one isn't too bad. Good animation for the Master System/Gear.
Prince of Persia: Never played it.
PGA Tour 96: Crap.
NFL 95: Crappier.
NBA Jam TE: Crappiest.

I prefer my Lynx to it immensely, as far as late 80's/early 90's color handhelds go.

Uhm, I should try it with some of the new batteries (I do not think they have changed that much though)... I have not used it in a while, the little puppy :).

You fucking kidding me? I have the Game Gear, AC adapter, screen magnifier, carrying case, and a mountain of dead batteries dating back to the early 90s. I still yearn for the TV adapter tho...

have one.. still take it with me on flights etc. it lasts pretty well using 2200mAh rechargable batteries. I mostly play Sonic 2, Sonic Chaos and Mortal Kombat 2 :) Great fun. Wish I had more games.

I have one with a couple of games. don't know exactly where though.

defenders of oasis was such a great game that I had to keep the system.

I bought mine from a kid at school for like 20-25 bucks. Came with Echo, Sonic 2, the adapter and a little magnifier, pretty damn good deal I'd say. :)

Since we're kinda on the subject, what are some good Game Gear rpgs?

I still yearn for the TV adapter tho...
:lol Yeah I was also wanting to get that. I heard it doesn't work with some models though.

Still got mine hidden away in my closet with about 20 games. Its been pissed on by my old cat about 3 times.

Loved that thing. (Always played with an adapter, it was my buddy on long car rides)

I've got one, but I can't remember the last time i used batteries in it. Even back in the day i used the ac adaptor. Haven't tried the new types of batteries in it.

I have the majesco rerelease one in the box, somewhere... along with super columns and a busted copy of shining force.

I still have mine. I play it once or twice a year. It was the only Sega system I bought while it was still being supported (I got the other systems in various garage sales years after they had been abandoned).

Damn right I still have one. A lot of games, too. At the time it died, I had more GG games than GB games. I think I had more Genny games than SNES ones, too. Odd that I stuck with Nintendo after Sega died off.

Same.

Bought mine in 94 (yeah, lttp) with case, 3 games, ac adapter, huuuge dual battery pack/handles, and car adapter for about 60 bucks. Sold it in 98-ish when the AC adapter died. Regretted it for awhile (I always wanted one when I was a kid, but I sold it when PS1 was at it's height, and I kinda lost the will to bother with it after the AC adapter died.) I don't regret it so much after PSP and PSPSMS came along, though the sound on PSPSMS is still pretty awful, but I can replay my Game Gear games at full speed on the go again, so I'm happy.

I bought one from a kid at Gamestop. I was finishing up a purchase and he tried to sell it to them for credit. They laughed at him and he started to walk to the store. I offered him $5.00 for everything and he gave it to me.

Came with the system and about 20 games, including a bunch of imports.

I use my old PSOne AC adapter for it. Somehow, it fits and works fine and is the correct voltage.

Fuck yeah i still have my gamegear !! power rangers is a sweet ass game on it ... there was some awesome xmen games too, NBA Jam, Lemmings, sonics, battletoads, the sports games, gamegear was awesome.

and holy shit ! fucking paddington bear !!!

Got my Game Gear with the Godly Master Gear converter lying next to my Nomad mere inches away. I always used an AC adapter, but got a battery recharger pack that also works well (surprised more people didn't get this). Unfortunately I think my GG has cacked out, so I'm gonna try and get another one in the spring.

I got the game gear and nomad in the garage. I was so sure at the time nomad would be the second coming of buddha, but it wasn't as hot as I expected. Plus both of those suckers eat up batteries way too fast.

Yes, i still have mine along with NBA Jam game. I lost my NBA Jam somewhere in my house.

Sadly, i rarely use that thang. And also, i wonder the TV Gear Attenna works on GAME GEAR? Did anyone tried it?

I have two! One blue one that I picked up at a yard sale for $2, still works, though it is lacking a battery door, and another black one that I bought new at TRU for $10.

Games:

Jurrassic Park
World Series Baseball
Sonic Chaos
Terminator 2
Sonic Drift 2
Super Columns
Sonic 2

Guess now I'll have to break this thing out and play it some, for old time's sake. What were the best games released for the GG anyway? I might be inspired to buy some more. Were these things region-free?

Nate

My brother still has his, but the screen is all scratched. Defenders of Oasis is a great game though - Middle Eastern style oldskool RPG.

I think mine is still at my parents' house somewhere (for reference, I moved out four years ago). I don't think I had one game that I truly enjoyed on that power hog.

Is Jurassic Park like the Genesis one? That game was awesome.

I'm not sure if the Genesis version is the same or not, but I fired up the GG version just now, here's how it is:

Ok... 1993 copyright, nice... Helicopter flying into JP, scrolling messages at the bottom let you know that dinosaur attacks are rampant. They let you know the main computer is having trouble, but going by the graphic someone just simply switched it off... Scrolling message lets you know that, gasp!, the dinosaurs are now entering "unsupervised" portions of the park! Holy shit, they could be doing drugs or something!

Anyway, you are tasked with getting them back to their pens, apparently. You are given a stage select map of sorts, each stage a different dino. I chose Tricerotops. Starts off you are driving your Jeep in a side-scrolling stage. Super fast dinos come jumping, higher than the treetops, at your vehicle, and you have a crosshairs to shoot them with. They seem to drop power-ups (one looked like a gas can) but they fly off screen so fast I don't have time to pick them up.

Suddenly, a boss health bar appears and a huge dino comes up behind my Jeep. I repeatedly blast him and his health never drops, not a single bar, yet he keeps hitting me and I finally run out of health and die... yet it says "Stage Complete!" and I'm on to the next stage. This one resembles Contra. You get to run and jump, shooting at dinos with what appears to be a sonic gun, as it shoots waves...

Ok, past that stage, now on to one where the trees are whipping back and forth due to... tornados! Don't recall those in Jurrassic Park... Anyhoo, these are tiny ones that actually hit you and do damage. Lighting comes down out of the sky, and blasts holes in the ground, which you can duck into and dodge the tornados... ok, and now a lightning blast has set fire to a tree... and i'm dead.

So there you have it, first couple of bewildering stages of Jurrassic Park for the Sega Game Gear. Sentient tornados, high-jumping dinosaurs, and poor resolution = questionable gameplay. I think I'll stick with it until I get so frustrated I hurl the cartridge out the window...

Interesting. Nothing like the Genesis version (which was nothing like the SNES version).

I wish we could return to the days of fully differentiated cross platform releases (and libaries in general).

I still have my Game Gear somewhere. I remember saving up for it...I wanted one so badly. I got it and withing like 2 hours the batteries were drained. I invested in some rechargable batteries right away then I only used them when traveling. I'd plug that thing into the wall just to play Columns on the crapper.

Yep. Along with my Master System converter. It was a great way to play some Altered Beast. And I have all the Shinobi and Sonic titles for it.

I have two and a ton of games. One of them has the bits snapped off where the TV tuner stand sits though. I also have a Nomad and a ton of Megadrive/genesis games which I actually do use from time to time. Playing Megadrive/Japanese Genesis games in public makes you look stupid though because you have to sit them on top of the big action replay cartridge :(
