Does G router step down all the devices it's talking to if even one is B?

The black man everyone at Activision can agree on
I was under the impression that a G router will only talk in all G or all B, therefore if you want G speeds you need to make sure that all the cards on your network are G's... but recently a co-worked said he thought that routers now were able to run in a mixed environment type mode, giving G devices G speeds, and B devices B speeds.... is this true? Do all G routers do this or is there something I should be looking for in the specs to know it does that?

G and B are compatible

If you have a G router and G adaptor, you get G speeds. 54mb/s
If you have a G router and B adaptor, you get B speeds. 11mb/s

We have a G network and when we've allowed vistors with B adapters on, it doesn't seem to slow the network down to B speeds. I haven't really tested it though.

This is with a Linksys WRT54G router.

Yes, unless they are dual channel they step down the speed to the slowest device. For many networks (like the one I have at home) I just set it so that only G devices and higher can connect - getting rid of the problem altogether :)
