does super mario sunshine get better in the latter half?

I picked this up when it launched but it just felt so dull for a Mario game & the waterpack just felt tacked on for no good reason. I only got about halfway through and I was wondering if it gets better in the second half or what? I've read many people on here that said they like it better than Super Mario 64 and I don't understand how that's possible.

If i remember correctly, i think it was better in the second half, but there is no way this game is better than mario 64.

I don't like it as much as SM64, but you should try to get to Noki Bay if you haven't already. It's a really cool level, maybe the best in the game. I wouldn't say it gets a great deal better in the second half.

It had some memorable moments like the level where you used your water pack to change the shape of the walls to manuver..... i think it was Noki bay or something.... that was ingenious...but the last level (before the end fight) was kind of anti-climatctic.... I still love the game though and would recommend playing it...

the playcontrol owns.

Seriously. And I thought FLUD was great! I was totally super acrobatic elite force nine, doing crazy SKILL PLUMMET LEAPS off fucking roller coasters and shit.

While the game has major ending issues and some of the later levels get pretty boring, I wouldn't say that there is any major shift either way in the end.

I really liked the game, personally, and prefer it to SM64 if only because it plays a hell of a lot better.

:lol It gets MUCH worse the more you play.
It's true.

Though I agree about playing Noki Bay, that's alright (especially if you have access to the rocket nozzle).

If you play to the end, the ending battle will have you going "WTF?" with it's lameness. Worst Mario ever, it's not worth the trouble of finishing.

BTW I played Mario 64 consistently for 6 years. I LOVE IT.

P.S. Didn't the path/gauntlet to Bowser feel more like a Crash Bandicoot level? I definitely got that vibe, though it wasn't as fast paced as Crash.

I'm in the "It gets worse" camp.

Some of the latter levels (especially the hidden levels and "classic" style levels) go beyond challenging/hard into cheap/cruel.

Having just played all 3 recently,
Platforming SMS >>>> Mario64 both versions. Screw the waterpack haters. Love it.
Control SMS >>Mario 64 >>>>>>> Mario 64 DS
Polish, presentation, and level variety Mario 64 >>>> SMS (especially the ending, WTF is with the slowdown?!)
And finally, SMS secret level music >>> everything but dire dire docks :)

Second to Psychonauts, yes, yes it is.

The park level rocked! Roller coasters!

Psychonauts is my second favorite, but hear me out. I just think Mario Sunshine's platforming elements are more refined where it counts, whereas Psychonauts wins the points for having a far more charming world/storyline. I just think Mario Sunshine was a bit more fluid, and had the perfect momentum/weight for your character.

The controls were awesome, yes, but the level design was putrid. Nearly half of the levels outright sucked(and some, like the amusement park, could've been MUCH MUCH MORE). That's not good when you got like 7 total. :P

Still, I agree that it's the best traditional 3D platformer we've got this gen. And that's pretty damn sad.

that says something about Nintendo. They put out a game that many find disappointing, but it's still better than 99% of the games in the same genre.

SMS gets slightly worse in the 2nd half, but not as bad as a lot of people in this thread are making it out to be

The old school levels were great, but overall Sunshine just didn't do it for me. I still bought it and enjoyed the game though. I missed the great variety of environments we got from SM64, and the classic enemies. Among other things.

Honestly I liked Jak & Daxter better (the original one), than Sunshine. I haven't had a chance to play Psychonauts yet. <'hangs head in shame'>...

what were some of the latter levels? IIRC the Hotel one was towards the end, and i didn't care for it. Bowser's final leve was pretty hit and miss (and really goddamn frustrating). Yeah i think the best levels were towards the beginning. STill a fun game though.

SMS is the single most disappointing SM game ever, IMO. It really feels like they just kicked it out the door as soon as possible to have a 'real' SM game on the platform sooner.

The game gets much better as you progress, only for the sole fact that there are much more FLUDD-less platforming levels. I have nothing against FLUDD but the traditional levels are some of the best platforming sequences you can find this generation. The most disappointing part of the entire game is the final boss fight though. Insultingly easy and the path leading up to the boss is just as pathetic.

Still, SMS is a great game. I wouldn't put it above SM64 though.

playing thru this myself last weekend, i could NOT understand the love for those fucking secret levels. whenever we would get to one, me and my gf would be like "oh fuckin hell ANOTHER" one. finish it quick and hope there wasnt one for a long time,

i used to like mario 64 more than SMS before. but now, completing SMS and going back to SM64 on the n64 (not DS) makes me realise that SMS is the superior game. i just wish it was based in the mushroom kingdom.

oh yeah, noki bay kicks ass

Eh, lets chase evil mario again, and again and again. Who the hell green-lighted those big nosed blobs, terrible art.

Nowhere near as great as SM64. Worth playing for Lost levels, which were awesome

Sure the level design may be short sighted, the coin collection cranked up to RARE level and the character design straight out of Sonic Team... but the game still rocked. Bonus levels + FLUDD for the win!

Actually, I liked the hotel level very much, especially the boss fight in it. I was surprised that a mario game could have this kind of atmosphere. It's music was also nice.

can't believe nobody has said "it really fell down on the blue coin hunt" cause that flat out sucked. couldn't get certain coins unless you were on a certain shine, had no way to know which shine you should be on. Difficult and just guess work and tedium to complete it 100 percent.

That said, platforming was awesome, blue coins aside, great game with some not so flash levels mixed in (and some great ones, like the lost levels)

How could anyone not like the warp levels? That's like going against gaming itself (except the one where they throw you).

The hotel level sucked, but not as much as this suckeroo:

Who are these people? Am I the only person who thought SMS was easy?

probably, SMS wasn't a cake walk by any means.

I like it more than SM64DS, maybe because I played SMS before SM64!?

we're talkibg about sm64 not sm64ds. SM64DS is pooptacular because it doesn't support analog.

I love Super Mario Sunshine, but I would also say that it takes a downturn in the later levels. If you're not a fan now, you probably won't be a fan period.

I will never for the life of me understand all the hate geared towards Super Mario Sunshine. I thought the game was absolutely brilliant in every way. Seriously, this game is like my MGS2: SoL for the GCN. I thought the water pack was amazing, the level design was phenomenal and the graphics were just as pretty as games coming out today.

9.5/10 for me

I thought it was pretty easy, except for one or two little segments (that just were more annoying than hard, cleaning off every little spot)

But I'm really good at these types of games.
