I recently bought Polarium and I'm really loving it, but I only have 3 puzzles left to clear. Is the Japanese expansion compatible with the western version?

Failing that, are there any proven good 'sets' of custom puzzles?

there is no expansion. just a gba game that's based on polarium.

Polarium Micro (or Polarium Advance) is no expansion, it's a completly new game.
