[Nintendo Ate My Children]

Nintendo fucked up. The DS was a panic move inspired by the PSP, a poorly thought out stop gap to grab some attention away from Sony. For once, Nintendo recognized a major threat and attempted to do something about it, instead of their normal "Competition? What competition?" attitude. I think they would have been better served ignoring Sony and rolling out the next Game Boy at E3 2005 and launch Fall 2005. Which they are rumored to do, anyway. If that pans out, does anyone see a real future for DS past this year?

I thought it was obvious to everyone that the lineup was terrible, and looked to be terrible for quite some time into the future. I bought mine solely for GBA playback, and haven't been disappointed. I absolutely adore the GBA library. The Mario 64 DS minigames have been a nice suprise, but I can't really force myself to play through the single player to unlock more. The system will be worth having for DS support when Castlevania and Advance Wars 3 hit, PSP is gonna be a better buy until then. I'll be getting one once I hear word on the build quality from the posters here.

Personally, I'm also disappointed in the DS line up. That's currently out. I wouldn't sell it though, there's too many games coming up that I'm excited about. The only reason I bought it so early is that there was $20 off if I got it first day and I was quite interested in SM64. I figured by the time it dropped by more than $20 all round, there'd be too many games I wanted and I'd have shelled out full price for it. I was rather hoping Ridge Racer would be better too.

Here's how I look at the DS. Sloooooow start. Vast majority of software out at the moment has either been rushed or ported from the GBA. The future line up seems fantastic, with:

etc. I mean wow! What a line up that is. Can't really say I understand people who aren't interested in that, though they seem to exist. Also, take away the rushed games and GBA ports that will disappear soon (to a large degree anyway, all systems have some rushed games), and pretty mcuh all the problems go away.

That's not to say the PSP isn't a great system. I'll get one eventually, probably within in the year if there's something I HAVE to have, if not then whenever the price drops. But selling the DS for the PSP with all those good games just around the corner? Well it's your life, but I find it pretty stupid.

So far the DS is dissappointing me to, but I'm actually keeping mine because outside of the launch window, PSP has no games that I even have little interest, other than that FF game. I'd say the best part about the DS so far is the multiplayer, wireless is infinite times better than using a link cable and playing mario multiplayer and metroid deathmatches is very fun, i'd keep it just for that reason.

I choose PSP over DS and I was very hyped for the DS(some might remember my comments)

Ive looked at the hardware/software lineup for each portable and the PSP just has more coming for it what I want, and not to forgot the media player features of the PSP. I say go for it Oli, infact you might be helping Nintendo in the long run if fans of the Company start demanding such features for the next GameBoy.

When you do rebuy a DS, I actually do want you to make a thread about it.
In fact if you decide to not do this, that'd make a good thread in and of itself.

I got mine the other day and I just know good things can be done with the touch screen. And after playing with the wifi, it's just icing on the cake. As soon as new Nintendo titles start coming out on the thing, and the higher profile third party titles, it's a no brainer IMO. I can't wait for E3.

Personally, I think Nintendo should've held back launching the DS for a couple of months. It feels like they just wanted to take advantage of Christmas to get sales, and could've used those two months to add a few more features (like the find a nearby DS one). I usually buy a couple of games with Nintendo systems (2 with N64, 4 with GBA, 3 with GCN), but this time around, there was only one. Maybe having Mario 64 and Wario Ware in a February launch would have left people more satisfied. I personally, am satisfied with my DS, simply because I can play Mario 64 forever, I love it that much, and also for it'a GBA compatibilty.

I'm actually happy with the PSP being out there too. I was looking at some pictures of the old model DS, and I'm glad that Sony caused them to redesign it, because it looks like ass compared to this one. Sony being out there making their own cool features, will make Nintendo stay on thier toes, because they know they'll have to compete.

The finding other DS features wasn't removed because of time restraints. The E3 DS was always going to be redesigned, we were told when they first showed it that it would be.

I guess everyone's taste is different, but there are some outstanding titles for the PSP launch. You mentioned Lumines...but you aren't excited by Wipeout Pure? Twisted Metal: Head On? Ridge Racer?

the former two series are akin to tomb raider to me... "that was fun ... back in the day", while RR is sort of interesting, but not enough...
if i were to actually buy a second game at launch (snowball -> hell), it would be darkstalkers chronicle... not for $50 though...

I agree 100% with your decision because I made it in December. I bought my DS at launch but after Mario64 I started to look up future releases and realized that the quality titles were so few and far between it wasn't worth it. I went on EBAY and actually sold it for $10 more than I bought it for due to the Christmas shortages. I now have the PSP and in one week I played it 10x as much as I played the DS. In the US launch alone there are 5-7 titles I am really excited about (it also helps that I like EA Sports BIG titles). Bottom line is you won't regret it, cause by the time the DS has enough quality titles you will be able to buy it used for $60 and enjoy the good stuff.

This is probably all just set up for some inevitable "PSP is so disappointing! I'm getting my DS back" thread planned for the future. Given Oli's peculiar taste ("everything on PS2 sucks"), there's really no reason for someone like him to be legitimately excited over PSP.

On another note, isn't it bizarre how one average-scoring review for Wario Ware has set off such a powderkeg? I really can't stand whiners who bitch about lack of post-launch software. Unless it's your first console, you should already know that there is going to be at least a 6 month software drought.....and shut the fuck up. Even I'm not that big on DS, but if I had bought one I wouldn't be trading it in so soon. Why wouldn't you at least keep it for GBA games and Castlevania? Is importing out of the question for you guys? Sure most of the titles will be $50, but if you guys seem so desperate... Meteos, Kirby, Egg Monster Heroes, Pac-Pix, and even despite the heavy Japanese it'll have, but you guys are so desperate, Another Code. These titles may or may not be must haves,but along with Yoshi, Polarium, WarioWare, and hell even Twisted coming into the mix here in America, I don't see how you can't have some fun with your DS.

But yeah whatever, I'm not having a single problem not owning a DS game that sells the system yet, or hell even anything to fucking play. I've got a handful of GBA games that I simply have not beat yet and I couldn't even bother going back to the SP screen. Frankly I'm glad for the drought, otherwise I highly doubt I would have ever gotten to finish a few games I have, and I still have a backlog of games I need to buy. I somehow highly doubt you've played all there is to play for the GBA as well, importing included. The thing is though, you don't need to get too much March seems to be when things pick up, quite a few releases are slated for the month, so I can only assume that April and further down the line will have some too, Japan already has April titles announced I believe.

But whatever, this is an olimario thread, he's just going to rebuy the system, we all know that. So I hope he enjoys the money lost on the system.

Touch and Go feels like a minigame that was painfully dragged out into a full title. Yawn.

As for my "DS hate", I was totally gay for DS this holiday season but quickly lost interest (even moreso once I got my PSP). God forbid I would prefer one piece of consumer electronics over another.
