Donkey Kong Bananza |OT| Red Faction Gorilla

Hit the credits. What a blast. Them Nintendo folks sure know how to make a fun video game. Everything after the K.Rool reveal is an insane thrill ride and I loved every second of it.

Played an hour so far, just rescued Rosaline, but I am not hooked yet. Is there a specific event / timeframe that once I hit it and it hasn't hooked me yet, I won't enjoy the rest of the game?

I thought the next proper layer (Canyon Layer) was the first really good level in the game, and it's pretty much bangers from then on.

Just realized after hearing it mentioned in a video that you literally don't have to collect any bananas, or any collectibles for that matter, to progress the game. Nothing is gatekept behind bananas except post game content.

Finally finished the game. I didnt 100%ed the last 3 layers, because i wanted to see the end. Awesome end sequence and the boss wasnt even hard. People said it was a big difficulty spike and shit like what? It just had a bunch of HP, but thats about it. Used the most OP form, elephant and it was piss easy lol

Amazing game overall and it was fucking massive. Didnt expected it to be this packed with content and its not even over after the credits

There's some harder stuff in the post game.

I'd say there was a slight spike at the finale basically, but only because I still had 4 hearts and pretty much needed to not get hit. Once I used my bazillion saved skill points to get some health, I won first try. Im sure you can do it without getting hit though, but meh.

Definitely amazing game regardless of the lack of difficulty. Way more than I expected by FAR.

I'm on the final boss the green one and getting my arse kicked.
Just upgraded the Apple cans and loaded up for another go later today.
Wish me luck! (welp)

Oooh that's when the fun begins!

That's me finished.

+ Very pretty game, a riot of colour
+ Extremely satisfying gameplay mechanics
+ Fun Skills and general gameplay
+ Mega cute, great chemistry
+ Incredible Animation and expressions
+ Smashing endless stuff turns out to be addictive
+ Runs smoothly for the vast majority of the game despite so much shit happening at time, technically impressive.

-Slowdown at he Final Boss, final stage was terrible, barely playable on occasion
- Maybe slightly too long

Not quite as good as Super Mario Odyssey but not far off it.

9.5/10

I hit the credits last night and played some of the end game afterwards. I agree 100% with your spoiler. Holy shit was that some amazing shit to finish the game.

DK Banaza has been added to Nintendo Music, only 9 tracks so far though. But the best Bananza track is here at least:

Just got the Ostrich power and am absolutely hooked. Definitely going to try and 100% this as it's pretty much crack the videogame. I also wouldn't be surprised if part of the design philosophy is to grab kids' short attention span as every 2 mins you're getting rewards lol.

Shame on me for waiting this long to finally play it (coincidentally it's proving to be the perfect palate cleanser for Hell is US in terms of tone and visuals heh).

I recently finished it myself last week. Most fun I've had playing a video game in a long time. I personally enjoyed it much more than Odyssey.

So I finally finished the game. The end was great and a nice surprise. Enjoyed my time with it. Collected most things even tho it's unnecessary.

Finally beat it. Fantastic overall. In the Forbidden Layer where that giant mound of gold was just K. Rool's belly was a nice touch. Also said fat alligator uppercutting Void was pretty tight.
Really enjoyed the final fight. The second phase where Gangplank Galleon starts playing was just

The final section of this game is probably the best I've played in a long time.

Yeah, they really knocked it out of the park with the finale.

I just started up Galaxy 1 yesterday. I loved both 1 and 2 back when they launched. After 3D World, Odyssey and especially Bananza, I now realize how stiff Galaxy Mario used to be. That run and long jump just doesn't feel as great as the last few titles.

It's making me appreciate Bananza's movement all the more. DK is responsive, fast and fluid as eF.

I'm also understanding EPD8's philosophy a little better these days. Scattered moons and Banandium gems, which are largely optional, work better than a single star acting as a flag pole/level ending. That's not to say that linear obstacle courses are obsolete, they are not, they are often brilliant. It's just clearer to me now why we started getting linear 2D/3D stages with 3 special coins or 3 green stars or whatever beyond the single star goal at the end.

I just finished this yesterday, got every single banana and fossil, is the post game to get 777 bananas grindy? I don't have time to grind shit, it took me 4 months to finish.

Not really, there are some rooms like a boss rush that might take a few tries and you need to save up some gold.

There are actually 1000 bananas to get but that reward isn't really worth going for.

Alright, I just wanted to be done by the time Prime 4 releases, I guess I'll just keep going until Dec 4.

Thanks.

Holy crap, this game is distilled ADHD. Feels quite a bit too open from the start for me to be comfortable. There's something to do everywhere you turn and, in the rare case there isn't, you can always smash everything and make something pop up.

Still working my way through this - the game does indeed get better as you go on, on Layer 1200 and sad that this might be ending soon - just got the last transformation, which was a bit underwhelming compared to the
Elephant transformation, which was so great and massively overpowered in the best possible way!

At first I wasn't sure about this game because it's so different from previous EPD games, and takes awhile to "get", but once it picks up, it's truly phenomenal. Sad that we only get a game from this team once every 7 years.

It's overwhelming at first but you'll get into the flow soon enough. Just know that you're not obligated to smash and find everything on your first visit to these areas - I would explore a bit but you can re-access these areas later with ease.

It's still a very loooong way :)
Damn really? Wow. I know there's tons of bananas to collect but I thought I was nearing the end of the main game.

There were sections I wished were longer, they were so good, like

The resort layer, and the Diddy Kong Racing Layer, which I feel like I barely did anything in

This game was an awakening for me but in a way that's not what you think.
It was the best first five hours I've ever played in years but I then had this feeling that the time spent on Bananza is mostly pointless.
There's just far to much of everything and there's no direction and it then made me realise that's exactly how Odyssey and TOTK ultimately works, it just filled with collectathons that don't lead anywhere.
Personally it made me sell my Switch 2 as I find most Nintendo games are just gacha games without a whimsical story attached.

I remember the resort layer being quite big , maybe go back with the elephant to help find things.

The racing layer is way too short though.

On the fourth layer right now.
I'm enjoying the game as a collectathon, but I'm not impressed. This is a pure dopamine rush, lacking any element that stays with you after you've collected a banana.

The thing is, this could have been a game about just any other character. It has nothing to do with Donkey Kong, not so far at least.
The environments are also pretty generic. The fantastic visual design of Mario Odyssey which made that game a Mario game seems to be missing completely here. Each level has a theme, but nothing that makes it stand out. No distinct landmarks, no great vistas. Everything is at the service of the gameplay. Unfortunately, this means that nothing is really memorable here, and this makes it even harder to find some reference points which you'd think would be essential in a game where you can dig throughout 90% of each stage.

Oh, and Nintendo seriously needs a division dedicated only to design bosses for their platformers. The bosses in Bananza have been an absolute joke so far. I used to think that Mario has had the most insignificant bosses in almost all of gaming after the Galaxy games, but Bananza is a serious contender. It's like at Nintendo they think all the fun is in the journey, and a boss should only be a minor bump in the road. The bad guys here may be a step above the Broodals in design, but they're complete nobodies.

Yes, they do want you to enjoy the journey, you can make it more difficult by not upgrading yourself.

I say that is the beauty of it. You don't have to do all of these things if you don't want to. The main game can easily last 60-80 hours if you want it to. I wanted it to, finished at 75 hours with 1000 Banandium Gems.

I rarely feel compelled to complete all side quests in RPG's or acquire all heart pieces in Zelda titles. I play as much as I want until I've had my fill. I'm glad those out there that want all that extra can go get it if they want it.
And there is plenty of direction with real incentive. You can literally break the game at a moments notice but you don't have to. If you couldn't break every substance known to man and at least 3 substances known to monkeys you would easily make out the guiding path and clues littered everywhere. And every banana gained can be added to the skill tree to add moves or enhance others.

On the fourth layer right now.

Now I'm a hardcore Donker, so maybe it doesn't count but I recognized Donkey Kong series references right from the start. I wouldn't expect more casual players to see these things but keep going and you might catch familiar elements.
I'm not sure what you mean when you say it lacks any element that stays with you after collecting a banana. The bananas stay with you and enhance you with each one you get. There is far more incentive to get them beyond being glorified keys to open up more levels like in Mario or Banjo-Kazooie.

Unfortunately yeah the bosses are super easy, especially at the beginning. However the last few will probably kill you a few times before you recognize their patterns. At the very least If you keep your health meter low you can make mistakes cost more in damage. If you've already been filling it up you can reset it anytime.

I mean that there's rarely some memorable feat tied to getting a banana. So far, the only challenges that were somewhat memorable for me were a bunch of those levels accessed via those triangular gates. Whereas in Odyssey or most Mario games, getting a star / moon is often its own unique challenge you remember and can talk about with other players. Turning into a T-Rex, finding a secret area, winning a race, beating a tough platforming section… in Bananza there's so many bananas and you get a lot of them by just digging or doing menial things. It gets very formulaic quickly.

I see. To a point I do understand where you are coming from. Despite absolutely adoring this game I can't think of too many Bananas that are super memorable outside of triangle gates either, though I do remember most if it being really fun. I will say that I loved seeking them out or stumbling upon them and loving the feeling of cracking them open with DK's fists. Even those meager findings felt better to me due to the punching rather than the easier Ground Pound type moons in Odyssey. If you are only on the 4th layer I say give it some time, because there are some really neat things going on in later layers. That underground processing plant didn't do it for you in the giraffe layer? That brought me back to Donkey Kong Country's mines and factories, that's when the mechanics and world really started to win me over.

And yes, some bananas are far easier and super brain dead than others which I think is necessary for younger audiences or people who are new to video games in general. They really designed it so you could skip every banana and bee line it to the boss. I'm cool with those kinds of options as again it's probably necessary for newer or younger players to feel accomplished. I'm the type who really enjoys exploring and with them littered everywhere it gives me a lot of incentive to run, jump and climb all over everything.
