Donnie Darko, explain to me why people love this movie?

I saw it and while it was good it seemed like John Hughes, meets Its a Wonderful Life (or is it?).

What about the movie has you so enamored?

I liked the characters (the acting) and the writing/script, the soundtrack (superb) and the whole quirky atmosphere. I think the time travel/sci-fi stuff is sort of stupid, but doesn't mar the quality of the movie as a whole.

Like all cult movies, it's very quotable.

"what's 'feces'?"
"they're baby mice"
"awww!"

The '80s teen movie' vibe was pretty neat. Everything else (read: the scifi plot) was a mess imo.

Because some Hot Topic employee ranted about it in their deadjournal poetry, probably. Every person I've seen go on about the movie is like some 16-year old who thinks it's shocking to wear fishnets on their arms and a marilyn manson shirt.

And yes, that's a broad generalization coming from an old white redneck, but in my experience it's also pretty accurate.

I own the DVD, saw it in the theater, but I merely enjoy it. The writing, the acting and music are well done, but it is not the greatest film of all time as many would lead to you believe.

Honestly, i'm tired of annoying people who dont know anything about movies ruining this films reputation by heralding it as the second coming of christ. Its a movie that is well shot, with an amazing soundtrack, great casting and an odd storyline. But thats it.

I think I got the message of the movie as saying that if you were dead the world would be a different place. Because you are alive it is still different. Everyone touches everyone else by the simple matter of existing. If Donnie died when the jet engine landed in his room he would never have torched the house for instance and dude would never have been caught with the Kiddie Porn. Then again, if he did die the bunny suit guy would never have been shot.

Almost the worst reason for liking anything. Not him in particular but liking something because of a person in it is pretty weak. Hell, I think Christoper Lambert is cool but most of his movies suck.

Time ta STEP IT UP
I don't really think it's that great of a movie, but whenever it's on HBO I'll always find myself watching it.

Everyone in my school (I'm in highschool) seems to think this movie is an essential peice of filmmaking, but when you ask them about it they don't know what the fuck the movie was about.

I think it's a very good movie, personally. On it's own, its slightly confusing... leading to you having to listen to the commentary and watch the DVD extras for it all to fit together. I think that's its major downfall.

I don't consider it the best anything, but I do enjoy watching it.

Sometimes people get attached to things that are outside of what they normally watch. I think that is the case here.

I believe we have group consensus, no more Donnie Darko threads are necessary.

works for Gamestop (lol)
I thought the movie blew. I won't understand why people like this movie, just like how I won't understand why people like Eternal Darkness. SHEETY movie

Maybe I just made a mistake and wrote the headline quickly.

I haven't seen the movie yet. She's the reason I'm going to get the Director's Cut DVD (I assume it'll come out eventually) when it's released.

Does she wear tassels on her nipples in the DC version or what?

As far as I know, no. :p She looks good, but I'd be watching the movie for her acting skills, not nudity.

The tassels would be cool. But wtf is wrong with you hateful mutherfockers? Donnie Darko kicks ass. All the stuff said before, it's an interesting story. Not the best, but I like it a lot. If it wasn't good, I wouldn't have bought the DVD. Can't argue with that. :D PEACE.
