But to be fair, some hand signals are offensive depending on the country but this seems out of the blue offended because they ran out of what else to take offense with.

If we can't use thumbs up for un-ironic agreement or thanks, what are we supposed to use instead?

What's the context here? I basically have no other hand gesture than the thumbs up. I really don't want my house getting burnt down cos it's now a sign of devil worship or something.
