Dragon Quest 8: new pics

Level 5 is awesome. They did amazing things with Dark Cloud 2, and it looks like they have outdone themselves again with Dragon Quest VIII. Thanks for the pics.

The Casino sign looks sexy. #3 (w/ Castle in backgrop) is really nice too. Nothing really shocking here but still looking solid.

Was that compass there before?

this will be the greatest rpg ever, by far. cant fucking wait

been playing DW7 recently...most enjoyable RPG I've played in forever! This game better kick just as much ass from a gameplay standpoint (the graphics are already amazing)

They say you've an alternative 1st person view in the fields.

Looks absolutely incredible... The DQ series has never been known for having good graphics, but this installment totally disregards that tradition. Dark Cloud 2 was a good game (probably my favorite PS2 game so far), if this game becomes more of a fixed narrative like 4, 5 and 6 (my 3 favorite DQ games), than the jumbled and slow-paced mess of DQ7, this game is gonna OWN. Like many of the Japanese, I've always preferred the DQ games to the FF games.

Wrong. DQ3, DQ4 & DQ6 were top of the line amazing looking for their time (DQ1-2 weren't bad either). DQ5 & DQ7 were really the only really ugly ones in the group.

you tell it, Jarrod!
it's amazing how much ignorance there is about the Dragon Quest series in the US. I guess we have Vestal's history of RPGs article to blame for that.

BTW I love how night/day is back in the series. It was a sorely missed feature, and hopefully there will be the usual gameplay scenarios involved (where certain things are only available at night, for instance).

I personally find it odd that the NPCs look infinitely more original than the Dragon Ball-ish main cast, but other than that the game is stunning

Looks awesome.

And yeah, DQ6 was sexy looking for the time. I picked up a used but in almost like new condition in Japan for 8 bucks (box, manual and everything). Beep Beep for Japan >=D

In many instances, DQ6 looks better than Final Fantasy VI (which I think released at the same time)

DQ6 released in late 1995, FF6 in early 1994. A fairer comparison would Romancing SaGa 3 which was also a late 1995 release.

Actually, you're right about some of the DQ games looking nice... DQ6 looked really good... graphics may haven't been as detailed as FF6 but they had much less of a "grainy" look to them. DQ3 remix has amazing graphics and animation though, it's definitely the best looking out of any DQ games up until 8.

Been looking forward to this ever since forever.

Funny to think that both DQ8 and FF12 are not only the newer releases in the series (both being developed by different companies/sections than the previous), but also taking the backbone of the existing formula yet evolving it to the next step. Two thumbs up from me.

Hurra for Square to have make a bond with Enix. Let them release this game on schedule so we American can have it as soon as possible !

Also, is DQ3 remix the one on GBoy ? Cause I have it and I think the graphic are really not that great. The game is good thought.

FF6 was more like released mid 94. In May. It dephends what you count it as early.

There's a DQ3 Remix on Super Nintendo that obviously has better graphics than the handheld shit you're talking about.

I beat DQ6 like two weeks ago. It indeed was a very pretty game for it's time. But I dunno, FFVI to me, has better art direction. I haven't played FFVI in over 10 years though so I'm not sure.

I concur.....Halo what? Doom what?

Precisely why I refuse to play the GBA version. Bring on the patch for the SFC Remix!

I thought this game was from Enix... doesn't the series belong to them? It's good to hear Level 5 is making it though, since I loved Dark Cloud 2.

Actually April 2nd... early enough.

Level 5 is working in a programming position under Armor Project/Square Enix Studio 10. Same as every previous Dragon Quest (which were coded by ChunSoft, HeartBeat, Arte Piazza & Tose Software).

1) How long?
2) Have there been any gameplay details?

...well, I can actually probably make some safe assumptions for #2....

I like how DQ8 has the same "world map" that FF and older console RPGs used to have before their PS2 incarnations. I think that's the reason why the PS2 FFs have lost its "adventure" and "travelling and sight seeing" feeling when you play them.

This is from the SNES version... and the animation is *STUNNING* as well (all the monsters are fully animated, with 2 or 3 attacks per monster.. much better than the FF's enemies "flashing" when they attack)

I disagree. Baldurs Gate games had a similar world map, in the sense that you don't travel on the map, only visit locations, but still had the "adventure" and "travelling and sight seeing" feeling you speak of. I think it was more attributable to the extreme linearity of FFX's world that completely sucked the exploration out of the game.

That depends how you make it. I would agree that this was the case in most instances of a FF game, however. But still, you had to find the next location, while in FFX, you just had to press up and you'd get there eventually.

It looks realy great. Is there a fan translation. Don't give me any link, just say yes or no.

Every DQ game has a (fan) translation except III remix, unless I'm not looking hard enough

Yeah, I hope DF and the DeJap team gets cracking on this.

By the way, I finally beat DQ I and II Remix for the SFC just minutes ago. That makes I, II, V and VI conquered with III, IV and VII. But I'm burnt out on this series for now so those will likely not get played....for a while! Fuck that I'm moving onto VIII.

I was a nice charming little game. But II, man, talk about an excercise in tedium!

I got to the last little shrine in Rhone, then talked to the priest, healed and saved my game. Then talked to the lady, who told me I can enter the portal to return to Beran. So I did. The problem? You need the jailor's key to get back into Beran, and like a crack angel I fucked around deposited it into the fucking VAULT!!!!
bangin.gif

This meant that I could not get back into Beran and thus could not travel back to any towns NO MATTER WHAT, because I did not possess the damn key and there was NO way around it! You're probably wondering, why do I need to go back to Beran why not just continue on to Hargon's castle? Well, I would have, only problem is I also deposited the fucking Eye of Malroth and could not continue onto the second floor of the castle without it!

So... I looked at my save state inventory and realized that I used ALL my save slots while in the Rhone cave and still could not get back into Beran! I tried casting return but the problem is I fucked that up by saving the normal way at the shrine in Rhone, thus warping me back there.
bangin.gif

I had to start the fucking game ALL OVER FROM SCRATCH and begin a new quest just because of one fucking Key!!
bangin.gif
I was going to say screw it, but I figured I MUST complete DQII for completeness!!! So I did. Another 30hrs wasted, and I'm finally done. Yippee! Playing 6 RPGs in a row will surely burn you out. I don't wanna see another overworld or map for months! Back to THUG :D

I'm still wondering if we have a chance that Square Enix will attempt to translate it again if VIII takes off
It's way too late for PS1 games like DQ4R or Front Mission 1-2. I think we'll see the PS2 remake of DQ5 though, and probably a similar DQ6 Remake.
