Dragon Quest VIII for PlayStation 2 may see release in Japan within the year, Famitsu.com reports today. Currently, Square Enix has announced a winter release window for the game, which frequently refers to the post-Christmas half of the winter, but Yuji Horii's next blockbuster RPG is reportedly heading down the home stretch of development.

The news comes from Square Enix's August 10 concert event in Japan, where the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra performed its annual concert of Koichi Sugiyama's Dragon Quest compositions.

Sugiyama himself spoke briefly at the event, saying that his composition work for the new Dragon Quest is complete, despite the amount of effort required for such a large game -- he joked that his score could stretch two or three kilometers if all the sheets were laid end to end. Work remains as far as converting the music into digital format and implementing it in the game, he said, but the development team is still striving to release the game before the end of the year.

Square Enix has lately run into difficulties with the scheduling of its guaranteed hit titles. A timely release for Dragon Quest VIII would help the publisher keep its dominoes in order for the coming year, so we'll watch out for more news on the game's final stages of development.
