The Good: Creativity in both platforming and fighting mechanics; fast-paced gameplay; boss fights exhibit an old-school design sensibility; catchy music and fun art style.

The Bad: Upgrade system feels underdeveloped; short game unless you delve into the bonus levels.

Drill Dozer does a great job of showing you the basics of how the drill dozer works and then slowly ramping up its difficulty with progressively more complicated levels and enemies. It's not the longest game, but if you intend to find all the hidden treasures in the levels, there's plenty of gameplay to be had. With presentation that matches the quality of the overall product, Drill Dozer should definitely not be missed by fans of classic side-scrolling action games.

I'd gladly take it if it were free.

While it looks really really good, I can't even afford the games I REALLY want (Ape Escape 3, Dragon Quest VIII, Lost in Blue, Ouendan).

Quite a positive review, and they hit the right aspects. At first you don't think much of it, but in later levels, nothing is more empowering than picking up that Level 3 gear. The music switches, and you feel like you're twice as powerful as anything you encounter from then on in the stage.

I wonder if they redubed the voices, though, or left them as-is? Or cut them out?

*Chugga! Chugga! Chugga! Chugga! Chugga! Chugga! Chugga! Chugga! Chugga! Chugga! Chugga! Chugga! Chugga! Chugga! Chugga! Chugga! Chugga! Chugga! CHOOOOOOOOOO CHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!*

The game sounds great.

Good job by Game Freak.. hopefully there will be more non-Pokemon projects from them in the future.

I doubt it, the game bombed big time in Japan and I see it doing the same here.

That sucks but not that surprising at all... Guess Gamefreak will continue being Pokemon factory in the foreseeable future. :-/

Yeah, that's about right for Gamespot's scoring standards. I'd give it around 8.5-8.6 myself.
And after reading through the review, it's pretty dead-on. Honestly, having too few levels is seriously pretty much the only complaint that can be raised here; the game just succeeds and succeeds well in every other way.

Probably, even though it shouldn't. :(
Even if it does turn out that way, though, if there's any justice, Nintendo will put Jill in the Revolution Super Smash Bros. and then all Drill Dozer sequels will come to experience the "Fire Emblem effect."

So, uh, should we take this to mean that it's not a short game if you.. play all of the levels??
It's still a short game with 18 levels (if PlanetGamecube is correct), just not as short. [Edit: It should be said that they're pretty big levels, though.]

I will say that the levels that are there are all so packed with unique situations that I think there would have come a point where the game would have felt really complete--a point that shouldn't have been passed. If there were, say, 36 levels, I think some of them would have utterfly fallen flat. So I could sort of argue that, yeah, it's kind of a good thing that there are so few levels since that way absolutely none of them are boring.

I don't see why they couldn't at least have made six or so more levels, though. I don't feel like 18 completely ran their creativity dry. Maybe it's just since it was a new franchise for them.

for some reason i thought this game was one of those stupid waggly gyroscopic deals. i should pay more attention. gamefreak's pulseman on megadrive was actually pretty sweet, so i may check this out.
