[DS] Mario Kart: impressions from beta testers? :O

Many people out there are playing Mario Kart DS in both single player and via WIFI with other testers around the world.

I guess Nintendo doesn't want they to diffuse pictures and videos of this "final" version of Mario Kart. It is easy to understand.

But, please why don't you post some impressions about the game and about how it works using internet?

If you don't want to spend time writing down an article, please just tell us:

1. Is it better than disappointing (to many people) GC version, Double Dash?
2. Best Mario Kart ever (better than SNES and N64 ver.)?
3. Lag playing online...?
4. Someone told the game uses the BLOW function of DS. Is it confirmed? How does it work?
5. Killer Application or juMany people out there are playing Mario Kart DS in both single player and via WIFI with other testers around the world.

Thanks you lucky beta testers. :D

Maybe to get rid of the squid weapon quicker? It temporarily covers the top screen with gunk, which means you'll have to use the second screen to know where the fuck your going for a few seconds.

Nice idea! :O

Blowing? Hell no, the whole point of the squid thing is that if fucks you up!

I sure hope Mario Kart DS is more fun than the SNES version... The SNES version was insanely fun, I actually doubt the DS version will be more fun, but I hope so.

I guess you're right.
The point is that SNES (SUPER FAMICOM) version was the best 2 players version.

When I tried Mario kart 64 for the first time, i was disappointed.
And i'm still thinking it is not as good as the SNES version.
But it has 4 payers. And this makes the difference.

Double Dash disappointed me a lot. I was expecting A LOT more.

The videos of DS version remind me to the old but awesome SNES version.
And it gives me a great hope.

It's not nostalgia at all.

I can go play Super Mario Kart right now with a friend and have just as much fun with it as I did in 1992.

The later Mario Karts feel slower and clunkier than the original. The exception being the GBA version, which is only marred by the fact that it's on a portable and not a console.

I think it's the speed-up coins that make the difference, it adds another dimension to the gameplay.

SNES and GBA had speed-up coins. N64 and Gamecube versions did not (and neither does the DS version unfortunately).

The good news is the new arcade machine has them so hopefully that will be ported.

That's a good point, I think the coins are definitely a part of it.

Also, the track designs are better in the SNES version. I like the narrower tracks. It calls for much more precise corner-turning. The funnest part of the game is turning a corner exactly the right way, and then getting a little speed boost as your reward. In the later games, the tracks are wide open and there's very little opportunity to have to use your power turning at all.

Okay, fine, you can call it nostalgia, I call it the N64 and GC versions sucking compared to the original SNES version. Something just felt off and it just wasn't as fun to me.

I loved the GBA Mario Kart, and I'm hoping the DS version turns out to be a fun game that is more like the original game than later releases.

IAWTP.

I didnt spend alot of time with the cube version, but the N64 game was horrible. The track design was moronic, all I can say is Rainbow Road 64 and Toads Turnpike. Enough said.

By that I meant that the GBA Mario Kart was THE best Mario Kart. The sprites and the Mode Seven were a LOT better than SNES MK.

The cube version is ranging from abmysal track design to great tracks.

I personally like daisy cruiser, bowsers castle and wario colussum, but I hate the "traffic" tracks.

One of the weirder parts is that at the beginning, there is this unskippable cutscene where Wario and Waluigi sit down at a picnic table and open up a basket. These weird brown lines come out (signifying there is something stinky inside). Wario licks his lips, reaches in and pulls out two giant turds. Waluigi and Wario start eating the turds, smiling at the camera and winking the whole time. Note that this cutscene cannot be skipped and lasts for about a minute every time you turn on the game.

:/

It seemed like they messed up the handling or something though, compared to the snes.

Sounds like bs but WTF if true. And blowing in the microphone really sucks. That's the worst function on the DS.

I'm really looking forward to this game though, Double Dash is highly underrated if you ask me. Best multiplayer-game on the cube imho.

100% true! I have experience this unskipable scene 60 times! ThatÂ’s one hour of my life gone to shit.

Mario Kart Super Circuit > Mario Kart Double Dash > Super Mario Kart > Mario Kart 64

Each single one of these games have consumed more than 100 hours of my life. I consider myself a pro on Super Circuit, Double Dash and Super Mario Kart :)
Somehow Mario Kart 64 didn't cut it for me though.

I am playing it right now in the office - this is the BEST version of Mario Kart ever produced. The gameplay is superb, the graphics are sharp and smooth, and the additions only make it better......it's awesome - believe!!!!

PS The blow function on the ink doesn't work - I just read that post, got very excited then tried it, but unfortunately doesn't seem to have the function in the game - am sending an e-mail to NCL right now to suggest inclusion in the retail version!!

Fuck man... let it be. We don't WANT that feature. No part of the skill equation should include blowing on the fucking screen.

I look queer enough toting around a DS as it is.

Glad you think it's the best Mario Kart ever--if history is any indication, something tells me that the defensive nostalgia whores who claim SNES is as still as fresh as the first time will decide to differ. No matter how good it is.

Still, cheers. Glad to hear you really like it. I've got my fingers crossed.

I might get this just to be able to play against some GAF people over wifi. I hope it's possible to interact between races though. Otherwise it will be just like playing against the computer.

Good to hear! Although I doubt it'll be the very best version of Mario Kart produced, it's good to know I might be playing it offline as well.

Please don't.
