[DS] -- NFSU2 Interview & new pics

IGN: How will the unique features of the Nintendo DS hardware enhance the game design?

Ferguson: First of all, we've integrated touch screen functionality throughout the front end. Dedicated NFSU2 players will acknowledge that making the most of the many upgrade options can be quite time-consuming. The DS interface has been designed so you spend less time in the menu screens and more time out on the track!

In-game, the dual screen display means we can remove a lot of clutter from the 3D racing view. That may seem trivial, but it really helps the sense of speed on a device with a smaller screen like the DS. We also have an entirely new game mode called Own The Zone that really takes advantage of the GPS display on the lower screen, so it's not just a token use of the second screen.

Implementing touch screen control of your nitrous was a no-brainer - who hasn't wanted to re-enact the famous scene from The Fast and the Furious where Vin Diesel pulls out his laptop and goes into overdrive. Players now have more precise control over how they use their nitrous canisters - it is even possible to use two at the same time for a ridiculous speed gain on the final stretch!

Finally, players can use the touch screen to create a custom design and apply it to their vehicle. There are no limits to what you can draw on the screen, so we're slightly curious with what users are going to come up with - especially if our QA team gets their hands on it ! Keep it clean, kids.

haha, yeah right. Penises will be the the first thing someone creates with this feature. It always is. GBCamera for Perfect Dark faces? Taken out because it would just be a bunch of dickheads running around.

(not that much different than what they ended up with, but still)

That first pic doesn't look as terrible as the rest. I just wish they'd fix the road. It looks like a BMP file converted to GIF format.

Funny how pics surfaced today. I just posted yesterday there were no new NFSU pics in the no screens threads and wahlaahh. I'm sure EA reads GAF

Wow, they managed to get a 60fps framerate. Despite my hate of the Underground series (bring back classic NFS, EA), if this manages good scores, i think i'll pick it up. RRDS had potential, but in the later races all of the flaws present in the game come to a head and make it damn near unplayable. i'm really itching for some portable racing action.

Have you tried Asphalt Urban GT?

BLOW SHIT UP!

The only good thing about that movie.
Game looks good for a DS game, actually.

yeah it does. DS 3d has to be displayed at more or less its screen res or it'd look like shit. Can't wait for hands on or videos.

EA you read this. DO IT! :)

I may just decide to pick this puppy up. I've more or less passed on the NFSU games on the big boys (PS2, XB, GC), but I'm sorta craving a good racer for my DS, and Ridge Racer DS does not fill the shoes from what I've been hearing.

On the subject of EA, it's a shame Tiger Woods is seemingly so half-assed. Maybe the next edition will be more solid. I'm sort of hoping that the DS is like any other new console in that developers haven't gotten its tricks down and its power fully utilized yet.

i played a bit of it at EB. Unless i could score it seriously cheap, i'll pass. It's a decent racer, but i'd rather save my money for a game that's actually good. Hopefully NFSU will fit the bill. It's actually looking more polished than the PSP version at the moment, but i'm sure that'll change. Slave labor jokes aside, i don't know how EA's managing to support consoles and portables.
