DS rumordongle now confirmed (OLD?)

So all you'll need to do is plug the attachement in to the PC and you'll be able to play the DS online?! Surely it wont be that simple?

Will you not be able to play the DS online outside? You'll have to be in the same room as the PC, no?

USB dongle just creates a wifi signal from your PC's internet connection. I imagine its as simple as pluging it in to your USB port. How big the wifi radius is unknown.

I still don't get how this is possible, but *very* cool. I will purchase one even though I have a wireless router! It will be nice to go online with the DS pretty much wherever you go.

Um. It's more or less a Nintendo-branded wireless card. Maybe it speaks "NiFi" for uploading demos. What don't you get...?

Is this the official logo?

Whatever they call it I think I like "rumordongle" better. I was thinking today (I was bored) of finding a Super Mario font and making my own logo to put on the unit when it's released.

so around $30 bucks US to go online if you don't already have a wireless router? That's simple and easy enough.

This is awesome. I really wish Sony would look take a hint from Nintendo when it comes to this stuff. Nintendo is making their wireless network available to anyone that has a computer. You MUST have a wireless connection to use the PSP network. That is really pissing me off.

Iwata confirmed that consumers will not be required to pay any monthly fees to play first party titles - the only costs incurred will be the price of games and the user's own Internet connection. He said that Nintendo has worked hard to design a system which is secure and protected from the kind of abuse that can come from anonymity.

A Nintendo-branded USB Wi-Fi access point will appear on the shelves along side the first Wi-Fi enabled game for use by gamers who don't have a wireless Internet connection already set up - which would suggest that third party wireless access points can also be used.

Online retailer Play is already taking pre-orders for the "Nintendo DS USB Access Point", due for release on November 11. The adaptor is priced at GBP 14.99, a saving on what Play claims is an RRP of GBP 19.99.

Yes. And it's fruity and hideos. That thing DOES NOT MATCH with the sleek white Revolution aesthetics.

That's because it's not FOR the Revolution.

.. But it's still ugly.

Uh...and you must have wifi connection for the DS too. This is basically a wifi adapter for 30 bucks. If you look hard enough you could find about the same thing for a router as well that will create an entire network for you..

Compusa $50 wifi router

And i'm willing to bet the Nintendongle is only specific for the DS too. This will probably be good for parents to get their kids that don't need a WiFi router. You still need a broadband connection right?

Hmm... hope you're right. I just remember them hyping the "Wifi Connection" in the context of Revolution, too. But yeah, that thing gotta go.

The point he was making was with Sony, you have to have a wireless router. They don't have an inexpensive "rumordongle" alternative to get you online.

There are wifi routers that are cheaper than the dongle. The dongle isn't a cheaper alternative, it's just easier to setup.

Oh yea I understand what he's saying, i'm pointing out the difference though which is really negligible. You still play them at the exact same hotspots outside your house and they still both get online through wireless connections through your same broadband. Though the dongle is about 20 or 30 bucks cheaper then a wifi router people should seriously think about investing in a router at this point so you can use it on your next gen wifi enabled consoles and not be limited to just being able to use the dongle only for your DS (or maybe Rev if they are a little forward thinking but I haven't heard any confirmation on this).

don't worry, I'm sure kutaragi is stea.... being inspired by nintendo

I'm sure Sony will simple update the firmware so it can connect to the Nintendo USB adapter. I mean some dirty hacker will exploit poor Sony and allow the PSP to connect through Nintendo adapters.

If you buy a $15 wireless card for your PC, you can set it to share your main connection and use it as an access point for the PSP. It isn't difficult.

Granted, Nintendo's claiming to make it easier... but we'll see if that's true or not.

That's very relative. People who aren't big tech heads might want to use the online too. Simple is good.

Cool. I already have a wireless access-point at home though.
And yes, logo sucks. :(

:( I like the logo. Just cause it doesn't look like something serious using that font? Looks like a stamp right now :)

I have decent level of knowledge about computers, but I'm still not totally sure about what you just said. Imagine all those people who are even dumber than I am.

When mom buys a PSP and clerk mentions online and asks, "Do you have a wireless network at home?" The blank look on her face when the clerk tells her how to set-up a network tells lil' Timmy he ain't playing anybody from around the world.

With the DS rumordongle, the clerk can then tell Mrs. Clueless that she needs one of these too. Mom's happy, lil' Timmy's happy, the clerk is happy, and Nintendo's happy.

It may not seem like much, but does simplify the problem. Plus its another accersory for Nintendo and the store to sell.

Hopefully they redesign the logo for their WiFi annoucement in October, and put the logo on the game boxes.
