DScaler... Anyone here use it?

DaCocoBrova

Finally bought a new PSP, but then pushed the demon onto someone else. Jesus.
If so...

What settings do you use for best PS2 image quality? Way too many options/combinations for me to go through each one by one to see the difference.

It's been a while, but it should have some to help you configure it based off your processor speed and your desire for quality vs. speed.

Just go with those and if it looks good, don't sweat it. Even without the deinterlacing, the quality that dscaler pulls out of the tuner is great compared to some of the crap software that came with my card.

Been tweaking it and I'm happy w/ this...

That's damn good for the PS2.

DaCocoBrova .. what setting are YOU using..

i use dsaler as my tuner sw didn't work for ntsc games when i tried to play them via my chipped ps2 ..but this works just fine ...

but setting the hue and brightness etc is proving a pain .... tried SSX3 and argh ..very tricky to work your way through the soupy swirls of pink etc ...

Yes, s-video.

Lookin' good huh...? ;)

Let's see...

NTSC, S-Video
Pixel width - 720 (Makes a big difference)
Linear Correction
Sharpness
Noise Reduction (Gradual)
Temporal Comb
Tweaked the video adjustments (contrast, color etc.)

how would i go about getting ps2 on my PC's montor via pro scan .... some VGA adaptor? ..or a tuner card with the right inputs? i think all mine has is S-vid

I'm using it right now. Just wish it had stable time-shifting features.

I just go with the default settings... looks good to me as-is!

Temporal Comb, go to filter settings and select high quality
pixel width same as yours
i find that noise reduction gives me ghosting, so i use greedy 2-frame.

i take sharpness off too.

Is anybody experiencing problems after installing Service Pack 2 on Windows XP? I continue to get strange error messages never seen before, maybe I should install btwincap drivers.

@DaCocoBrova:
your screenshots look great! What TV-Card do you have and which version of DScaler are you using?

Width - 768 Pixels
Deinterlace - MoComp2 when playing, TomsMoComp when taking shots
Settings -> Video adjustments - adjusted the capture settings with regard to DVD playback
Apply a bit of Sharpness filter

I'm using a Leadtek WinfastXP 2000 Deluxe.

I'm using a Beta version, can't recall the number since I'm at work. I'll edit when I get home.

Latest one is 4.1.11 (still alpha, not even beta).

PAL, S-Video
Pixel Width : 720
Deinterlace : TomsMoComp, JudderTerminator
Adjusted brightness etc. a little.
No sharpness filter.

Turns out, I'm using an old ass 2002 build (4.0.0.4356).

So far so good... I guess I'll update although I don't feel the need to.

DScaler is pure crap. You don't get all the resolution. ATi needs to get their asses in gear and release an All-in-Wonder or TV Wonder with component in.

Why are there no component-friendly video input devices for PC? I never understood that. What about HDMI?

My version is 4.18 beta. That's the newest one on the site anyway. I just downloaded it to try on my capture card (some dodgy brand but I identified its Conexant 878 chip) and it's much better than my PAL-only software at present. I'll take some captures tomorrow and see how it goes.

So even the HD tuner cards don't allow for progressive input?! That sucks.

I'm confused now. Surely you are using DScaler to scale and deinterlace an interlaced video source, for display on a computer monitor, or projector.

If you had component or HDMI, then you have either progressive output which can easily be converted to pure VGA with no resolution loss, or a digital signal in the first place, which can be switched to DVI easily for monitor usage. Neither of which would require you to be capturing it through your PC anyway, which will always lose some information.

^^

There's no easier way to hook up any console to a monitor and get 'good' results. There's no cheap VGA solution for any console, save maybe the XBOX. The PS2 doesn't even look good on most progressive displays that I've used. But it looks great via DScaler.

Oh. I know you can get VGA-component converters, assumed it went the other way too.

when PC monitors are all LCD, good ones will have component inputs anyway.

Thats why my new TV for the spare room will have component in for consoles, and PC in for my PC.

So give it a couple of years and I think the problem will go away.

Audio support for a video card? AIW's accept audio inputs? Never knew that.

do the newer versions of DScaler include audio support for ATI All-in-Wonder cards?

Audio is routed to an input of your sound card, and that is configurable by the audio mixer.

For video, no, and probably will not. AIW cards must use DirectShow interface for DScaler, which will be inefficient and there will be dropped frames.

The current directly (through the built in driver) supported PCTV chips are Conexant bt8x8/CX2388x and Philips SAA713x.

AIW has never opened up the hardware spec nor interface, blame ATI than the developers for not supporting your cards.

What's a good cheap video capture card that is compatible with Dscaler?? Cheap as in Dscaler would be the only thing I use it for.

Pinnacle PCTV for example, I bought one for 50 euros 6 months ago (new of course).

Get the Winfast2000XP Deluxe.

DScaler will not be the only thing you use it for. Trust me.

Around 40 bucks @ NewEgg. Comes w/ a IR remote.

i wish i could use it, but it seems it doesnt work with my GF3 w/VIVO

any other programs i could try? (virtualdub looks like ass, already tried it)

They look sharp as fuck. In fact, the games looks exactly like those first shots I posted. I took some more of AC4 last night, but have yet to upload them.

I've had the opportunity to play the PS2, and VF4 specifically, on plasmas and CRT projectors here where I work, via component. Neither made the PS2 output look better. VF4 looked awful on a plasma... Even though the game is not progressive, it should look as good or better than a non-progressive CRT w/ component. Once I learned more about plasmas and their native resolution, I understood why it looked like sh!t...

DScaler and apps like it, let you tweak the sh!t out of the image so that it looks just right.

I just got the Winfast2000XP Deluxe. Is there video lag time with yours DaCocoa? I'm wondering if there's a way to speed up the response time or if that's just the nature of video capture cards.

Let me just say that I have a Radeon All-In-Wonder and I weep that I can't use programs like this with it. The cards that DScaler works with all tend to have 8-bit processors on 'em, but they sure seem to get the job done.

Too bad ATI doesn't have the damn guts to add sharpness, de-interlacing, and various other controls to its software.

I have no lag at all and I often have other apps going like iTunes and a browser.

What are your specs?

Your graphics card needs to go. Not that that's the culprit, but still...

Yeah, I just upgraded my PC and that's one of the remaining parts. I'm waiting for prices to come down (Or maybe just for the 6600 GT..).

Just reinstalled windows and I'm struggling to get the same results w/ DScaler now. Should have thought to write down the settings...

The image jitters now... Grrrrr...

I am trying to reduce lag as much as possible I have all the filters and such turned off. I have it on odd scan lines only for the deinterlace. Which is the best performing interlacing and does the placement of the capture card make any difference. Should it be closer to the video card? What else should I look for to increase visual speed?

Woah, I want to hop on this. I don't have a capture yet, and I just DVR'd a lot of local video of flood damage I want to edit, slow down, and put into Adobe Premiere.

Why do I need DScaler?
Video fed in from external sources is interlaced and if this interlacing is not taken into account when displaying the video on a PC nasty artifacts can often be seen.

Wow. I'm in. I need you guys to tell me with absolution what card'll do the job. I don't have the $300 for a Canopus ADVC-100 A/D Converter. I await your advice.
