Dungeon & Dragons,Warhammer,Magic the gathering

I enjoyed painting the WH40k models the most. Didn't get into D&D and Magic until I was an adult. Painting the models allowed me to sell off armies for the same cost (or more) than I paid, including costs for paints, so I encourage anyone wanting to get into tabletop to invest some time into learning to paint, too.

I run D&D, I would like to get to play once instead of DMing. The last time I played anything was about 5 years ago and that was a My Little Pony RPG (I never watched the show), which was surprisingly well made and fun despite it looking like a game for 3 year olds.

And I also play 40k, got a good group now so I am satisfied.

You dun fucked up lol :D A fully painted army (decently) can cost upwards of 10 times as much as the price of the models. My friend makes a living out of it. He has had jobs which netted him about $11k, and we are from Eastern Europe, so 11k is a TON of money here.

For sure, the profits can be lucrative. I was a decent painter: could do basecoats, finer details including eyes, washes to fill in details, and that was about it, so I was definitely not in the tier of painters who could flip an army for 10x the cost. The biggest army I sold was a bunch of Eldar stuff including vehicles and wraithlords, painted in the Biel Tan scheme. Cost around $400 over the course of 18 months and sold it for an even $1000. The dude felt thrilled and told me he felt like he was getting a deal.

Yeah, he was getting a real deal if they didn't look like a kinder garden painting. Getting a 10x back is an anomaly though, that is usually reserved for specialist models which are meant for display only, usually it is around 5-6 times for "normal" stuff intended for gaming. But what got a sensible chuckle out of me was "washes to fill in details" yeah no shit :D chugging a muddy water at a model is really hard, it is literally the easiest technique on the planet outside of dipping (and dipping is for MONSTERS). No disrespect of course, just saying it sounds funny. Something like if a youtuber said he is a pro at "rendering" :D Much love, bro <3

Correct, the techniques are pretty easy. Washing is probably the easiest + time-saving method I know of for models.

And yet the effect is "stunning" to the untrained eye. I've even used a wash for certain boardgames to make the pieces stand out (not my picture, but representative of what I'm referring to):

100%. Washing is definitely the best when it comes to "effect vs. time spent" and has made shadowing practically redundant. Incredibly easy, incredibly fast, amazing results. I remember when I got my first wash, I was jubilant at the results. Seriously, right now you can wash + drybrush and have a decent looking miniature in a manner of minutes. Or you can be like me and spend 12 hours on a single guardsman.

Oh yeah, drybrushing worked pretty well too, I forgot about that. Helped a lot for any chainmail, Tyranid bones, and all of those clean edges on space marine armor.

If I ever got back into tabletop I am going to defect to the Privateer Press side. Their design philosophy of fewer-but-beefier units means that I can spend more time painting individual details without feeling overwhelmed by a huge army. My favorite game by them so far is Grind.

I used to play Magic mid 90s to around mid 00s. I was almost certainly a better referee than a serious player. I used to like making decks with complicated or interesting mechanics for fun social play, but most of the players in my area eventually became serious comp players always playtesting boring meta shit.

You should try Ascension or Dominion if you haven't already. The gameplay consists of building your deck and I've seen a lot of MtG players get hooked on it.

I play MtG and DnD.

Picked up Magic about 4 years ago, I don't really play much anymore but I really enjoy the Commander and Brawl variants. They are great for beginners or super casual multiplayer games with as few as 2 players and I've even played with up to 6 players.

Started Dnd about 2 years ago, first campaign ran for a few months until DM couldn't run it anymore so we started a new one and have been running it since. I have a level 6 Druid and it's a lot of fun, we try and get together once a month or two with food and drinks and make a whole night of it. You can also create your character's mini on Hero Forge which I thought was great and made me feel more invested in my character.

I always wanted to get into D&D, but could never find a group that was interested.

Magic, though, I loved playing that in my teens. I got into it with my brother and his friends when Revised edition had just come out, so like mid-1994. I hadn't played it in a long time, but recently downloaded MTG: Arena, so hoping to get back into it digitally since it's unlikely I'll be able to play the physical version much.

My wife and I tried to find a local group for D&D last year, but it didn't work out due to work schedules. We play on Roll20 now, I recommend it to anyone looking to play without the hassle of finding a game locally.

Check out:

Dungeon and dragon type board games/dungeon crawls:

Gloomhaven
Sword and Sorcery
Shadow of Brimstone
Folklore the affliction
Blackstone fortress (warhammer 40k)
Core space
Star Wars Imperial assault
Descent 2nd edition

Or for card based games from fantasy flight games:

Arkham horror
Lord of the rings
Marvel champions

All the games listed are great as solo games, as well as, with other people. I personally play these more solo than with a group, due to my busy work schedule. Great fun!

(not the digital versions)

Ever played or do you play sometimes?

I would like but i am the only nerd of my friends 🤓

I have played a lot with Magic in my teens and bought some Warhammer's miniatures for hand painting them
Do you have VR? There is TabletopRPG that is really quite good for people who want to chill at home and still play with “real people” in a “physical space”.

I used to play D&D a lot in my teens, then I discovered booze, weed and girls...

lmao, I was basically gonna make this same post. I think I'd still enjoy it, but I don't know anyone that plays it locally anymore. I tried a few MMO's to see if that fit the bill, but I didn't enjoy any of them.

Hey is there a magic the gathering community around these parts? I'd like to be able to chat Ikoria and suchlike.
I don't know about here, but the Magic arena Reddit is VERY active if you are looking to just talk back and forth about the game.

How is the tabletop gaming scene nowadays? I know Dungeons & Dragons is extremely popular nowadays judging from these videos:

But I hear that SJW woke types have invaded the scene in recent years and have proceeded to make it a no-fun affair for many longtime players. I know many SJWs are also in the Magic the Gathering community.

At least for the MTG community that is overblown. Some folks just dont like more women characters in the game.

I used to play MTG 4 times a week at a shop. I play Commander and Draft exclusively in paper. I have been doing Arena during the lockdown.

I’ve got about 18 Commander decks 3 of which I’ve brewed and built during the lockdown.

I play DnD 5E when my group has free time and Star Finder as well which imo is better.

I’m considering remodeling my basement into a DND and MTG gathering spot since it’s likely 4 of the 5 LGSs aren’t going to repopen ever again.

Official MTG people are all SJWs and they think they can engineer their ideology on normal people.

These are also the same group that make DND and they are also mostly SJWs. Paizo are definitely SJWs of the highest order. I watch their weekly Twitch streams that make it to YT and I always stare through them when they let their masks fall off.

I don’t give a shit what they think because their products are still worth buying and aren’t too infected. It’s not like they don’t have a good reason for trying to make women feel comfortable at the table. There is always some fuckface who thinks they can integrate some degrading power trip fantasy into everyone’s game and sometimes it’s cringe about women. Sometimes they want to be god.

I just don’t like these companies trying to preemptively tell me to not play with them. Let me handle the fuckface they may not just understand the table expectations.

I've played DND, Magic, and Warhammer Age of Sigmar.

I have the most experience with DND. Played 3rd and 5th. Current campaign has been going since 2015. I'm the DM. 5th is amazing.

Age of Sigmar is pretty cool. Love the models. The price is high and it's hard finding people to play. I want to build a Cities of Sigmar / Stormcast army. I'll probably bail once Old World gets its reboot. Cost is an issue. But damn are the models cool

Magic the Gathering is... something I enjoy least. It feels predatory how it's made, more so than every other hobbyist game (which can be pretty predatory, especially Fantasy Flight games). Still my friends were into it for a bit so I dropped a couple hundred on building a deck. The game IS fun for what it's worth.

It's funny that you mentioned Paizo. They fired ultra feminazi Jessica Price (the ArenaNet woman who insulted the Guild Wars streamer) for being too militant for their tastes. Guess even SJWs have their limits.

I've personally never encountered a situation like you described when I gamed. If any asshole acted like that to any woman who gamed with us we would've personally beat his ass.

But I do agree that companies should just shut up about telling people how to play. Leave gamers to game as they see fit, gamemakers' input ends at the store where they sell this stuff.
