I have a Lite-On SOHW 812S DVD Burner in my PC right now. So, in a moment of "oh shit, I have a lot of anime/music/videos/pron, I needed to back up some things to DVD. Doesn't work. Doesn't work no matter whic type of DVD I put in there. DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, etc. Either Windows doesn't see it, or just thinks it's some foreign disc of DOOM. Nero doesn't work either. I get Write Errors any and every time I try to burn something. This is pissing me off bigtime. Just wanna back up some files, but no. Trouble ahoy. I've even installed the newest firmware for this player, and still nothing.

Oddly enough, the Windows driver for this thing is from 2001. WTF? I dunno what to do. Anyone have any help to offer to point me in the right direction?

Are these new discs or have you used them before and reformated them? I had a problem with my burner inwhich it would never burn to disc inwhich I had used before. i'm talking about RWs not Rs. I had to go out and buy all new discs.

Ha, my dad has the same brand of DVD burner and the exact same problem. I've tried like hell to fix it, but I'm clueless. My recommendation? Get a new drive :(

It's not the driver, but the drive itself. Try putting it on another IDE channel (meaning, change the IDE cable from master to slave or slave to master, on a different channel if you can). If that still doesn't work, your drive is dead. This has happened to me as well. It's pretty old so it should come as no surprise. And it seems that Lite-Ons have a habit of doing this than most other drives.

With the NEC ND-3450A (8x DL) for $35 at newegg, now's the time to take a hammer your lite on and get a REAL DVD burner!
