So my DVD burner won't burn DVDs. It was working just fine about a month ago when i burned a couple of dvds, but now that i pop in a dvd (from 2 different manufacturers) it says that there is a problem and won't record to a dvd.

once i got an error message saying that there wasn't enough power.

and another error was something to do with .dlls not working correctly.

i tried burning a cd and it worked fine, i tried reading a dvd and it worked fine

is it possible that my computer is just really hot right now and can't burn a dvd? any help would be apprecaited, idk wtf is going on with this thing

See if there are any drivers you can download and update for your burner. Other than that I don't know what to suggest. Sorry.

I went through this same problem last year. It turns out that XP's built in burning thing can't burn DVDs! Who knew! It certainly doesn't TELL you that. Grab a copy of Nero or something and you should be fine, if that's what you're doing.

It's going to sound goofy, but try this:

Go to your device manager, and uninstall your DVD burner.

Reboot your computer, and let Windows re-install it.

I had a problem recently where my drive appeared to be dead for no reason at all. It burned one CD fine ,and then after that it wouldn't work at all. I did the above out of frustration, and it's been fine since.

Maybe it just pooped by itself because you haven't used it in a bit. I know this happened to a CD burner of mine that I had on my 98. A month is not a long time at all....do you get the error once the burning starts, or does it not start at all?

well, i burned about 15 dvds at the same time a while ago back when my hard drive started making the clicks of death http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=137452

ironic thing is, the hard drive still works appreciably

now the dvd drive doesn't.

::pout::

there error comes up after it "starts" burning. the dvd isn't wasted so it doesn't actually burn anything. and then it tells me that error in RecordNow.

In easy cd creator it'll just keep going at 0% and nothing will happen.

Just do a search on the model number around the internet and maybe other people have had the same problems. Also phone and complain to the makers, they will give you free stuff.

24/7 Wal-Marts.

My 7/11 over the past year has been selling DVDs and what not over the past year. But I live in Canada so that means anything we have, in the USA it will be 2x better. So chances of them having them are high.

If you are considering that....just call before :)

Try burning a Linux live-cd and booting up in that. Try to burn something through that, and see if the problem is hardware, or just Windows.

went to cvs, they had DVD+Rs that were up to 8x

ooopps the one i bought was a ****ing DASH R meaning i can't burn it.

so i have to go back and spend 20 bucks on 10 4x dvds.

this is just to test out if my shit is even working. never mind the 75 useless 16x dvds i'm stuck with and can never use.

Finding practical applications for coastered DVDs/CDs is one of the great problems of our time. My neighbours attach a CD to each Christmas light during that time of the year, it reflects the light out and can look pretty cool.

i'm ending up just waiting until monday (today) to buy some dvds and test out whether or not my DVD drive is fux0red or its just a 16x problem

i hope its a problem with 16x dvds

but then i'm stuck with not being able to use any of the new dvds on the market...which isn't very good

Why not buy a new burner all together and at the sametime upgrading to DL.

It will save you the trips back and forth on the hunt for the right discs, the money (which almost equals the price of the DL burner), you can you use your 16x discs and you don't have to worry if it's really somewhat busted and on the verge of breakdown.

By a new drive that supports both formats.

had you done tht in the first place it would have even saved you money.

It's obviously very old if it only supports DVD+R. I'd say at least three years old. My +R crapped out around 2 1/2 years.

Replace it!

thanks for the advice guys. if worse comes to worse i'll buy one at best buy today.

i did get the drive 3 years ago, pretty much right before Dell went with +/-. Its already a DL burner though, and costed about 400 dollars i think :(. Its modular, too, so i could potentially get one from Dell but that would take time and that's not gonna be good since i need them tomorrow.

Lord Error

Insane For Sony
Did you try firmware update? Or test the burner under a different OS (Vista has problems with a lot of DVD burning software)

Also try the latest Nero 7 lite. Nero has really good compatibility support for the older drives, I've noticed.

I'd also recommend looking into a firmware update.

My Dell XPS Gen 3 came with a gimped NEC drive. Dell's firmware only let it burn 4x DVD+R's. When I started looking around online, I found out that is was just a rebranded version of an NEC 2500, which was able to burn both formats at better speeds. I've since even upgraded the firmware so that it can burn DL discs.

I'd stay the hell away from Nero 7. Nero 6 is a godsend, but Nero 7 is bloated crap. the install files went from something like 35MB to 100MB between versions, and I had very bad compatibility with Nero 7.

okay this problem has nothing to do with the dvd drive.

i installed my new dvd drive and it STILL won't work! except this time it burns shit onto the disc and then it says "oops **** you"

hmm.
Is it Sonic, Roxio, or both? We have problems here at work all the time where Sonic and Roxio won't even recognize our DVD burners.

Try uninstalling both programs. from there, get another burning program and see if you've got the same problem. I don't really know what other burning software is out there besides Nero, Roxio, and Sonic. Perhaps you can try an Alcohol120% demo or something?

i'm thinking that the PX engine or whatever is corrupted.

It ****s up with Sonic and the Roxio programs

and the program it comes with is Nero 6

status update:

nero 6 worked when i burned the dvd files i was trying to burn on a dvd on the new drive. seems like Roxio and Sonic RecordNow! use the same sort of program to burn their dvds and that's whats ****ing up. its the only thing i can think of.

i think what is also another problem is that my internal dvd drive can't do 16x dvds, so that was another problem which probably which didn't help out the situation.

instead of making a new thread I'll just post it here.... all of a sudden my laptop's dvd burner stopped burning DVD-R's and now it only works with DVD+R's... It happened the day after I burned a DVD-R so I know that it worked before.

does anyone have any sugestions?
