DVD Burning Question

I'm trying to archive some of the stuff I already have on CD-Rs to DVD-R. I know that the files I'm trying to burn work just fine on the hard drive. However, between two attempts at burning a data DVD, two files continue to not work on either disc. I burned the discs making sure not to be using any other processor or memory intensive apps at the same time. The data verification went off without a hitch. Unfortunately, every time I try to open the files from the disc, my computer just hangs. All the other files on the disc work fine, so they're not quite coasters. I can't drag the files to my hard drive without causing it to hang either. Having already wasted two discs in the attempt (I don't like partial archives), I want to know what's going wrong before I try again. Any advice?

Crap...I just checked back at another data DVD I had made, and found that some of the files on that one aren't playing back without hanging my whole system. Unfortunately, I have already deleted those files off my hard drive. This is really pissing me off, not know whether it was the burner, the software, or the media that is at fault. I thought that when burning messes up, it REALLY messes up, and wrecks the whole disc? Why can't the data verification tell me of these screwups?

Mainly video files. I have tried the discs on both my burner and DVD-ROM, and both had the same results. The system will hang until I either manage to close whatever was trying to access the drive, or until I eject the disc.

What program are u using to burn the data disc? Have u checked event viewer to see if any errors shows up when u attemp to play said video.

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer (System & Applictaion Tabs)

Do u have the latest version of Nero, did u change any of the options in Nero before making the data disc?

Ahh, it seems there are a bunch of CDROM warnings and ATAPI errors at about that time. The only option I changed between the past disc that I had checked, and these new ones was that I disabled disc-at-once overburn, which doesn't seem like it should mess up the burn of a DVD, and even if it did, that doesn't explain the other disc.

I have an OEM version of Nero 6.3.1.12.

Thanks. I'm wondering though, would the outdatedness of my Nero software really have been likely to affect the quality of the burn? I can't see Ahead releasing software that bugged.

Yeah, I had seen a few complaints on a site, but most of them had the burn fail before or during the actual burning process, as opposed to the burn process supposedly completing, but with errors in the writing.

This was what was in my event viewer btw:

It would be nice if it was perhaps just some issue of the drivers hiccuping, but I'm guessing bad data can also cause all these input errors?

Look like data errors on the disk. System is hanging when attempting to read the data at that certain sector on the disk u burned. U can click on each of those and it should offer a bit more information. Do u have any other media at your disposal u can try?

I know there are plenty of threads on the web about cheap DVDR, and that is great for backing up the occasional movie.

But when you are backing up your HDD, or its important to you, spend a reasonable amount on the media. Maybe also burn v.important backups twice, to different brands.
