I'm doing the thread a little early, since I'll be on dial-up this weekend, and there's a lot of stuff. This will be split into two posts.

Basically, October 18 is a geek's holiday, but there's other stuff worth buying as well.

Complete list

New:
B000AU9UYM.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

(single-disc and double-disc editions)

B000ADS6DA.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

B000AYELEC.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

B00005JO16.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

Classic films:
B00009QGEI.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

(that is great boxart)

B000A9QK7I.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

(this is one of Hitchcock's best)

B000AQ69SQ.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

(well, maybe not a classic)

Batman:
B000B5XOYI.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

(each film is available separately)

B000AQOHNA.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

B000A59PLU.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

Disney:
B000AAF1U4.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

B000AAF1TU.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

(both these special editions are much less special that the SEs these movies previously got--beware)

'80s cartoon:
B000ALM4GW.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

(volume one of four, two volumes per season)

B000AA4F2E.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

Bruce Lee:
B000A9QK9Q.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

Five movies: The Big Boss; Fist of Fury; Way of the Dragon; Game of Death; Game of Death II

Double-dips and rereleases:
B000A7DVY0.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

(comes with "coasters, cards, and a shammy towel", apparently--also repackaged in a Coen Bros box with Blood Simple, Intolerable Cruelty, and The Man Who Wasn't There)

B000A9QK96.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

B000AMWIVM.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

B000ARXF96.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

(comes with a ticket for The Legend of Zorro)

But as far as Zorro, you're probably better off with this (also out Tuesday):
B000A9QK8M.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

Film noir:
B000A2WSVC.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

B000A2WSV2.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

(two films directed by Anthony Mann)

Documentary:
B000A59PMY.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

(covers the Harlem Globetrotters from 1948-1951; narrated by Chuck D)

No boxart for the four-DVD GWAR collection, but I thought I'd call attention to the fact that a four-DVD GWAR collection actually exists.

Television:
B000A5046K.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

B0009Y2726.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

Bad boxart of the week:
B000AYEIMM.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

And thus we have proof of a benevolent god that loves us. Meanwhile, this is interesting if a tad pricey:

B000AYEIJA.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

7 DVDs of avant-garde cinema. Woo!

FnordChan

wow lots of great stuff next week

Shadow of colossus
Emperos new groove
Batman
Land of the dead
Saw
Big lebowski

ALL MINE!

B000A7DVY0.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

The Big Lebowski is one of my all time favorite films but I'm having a hard time getting excited for a reissue that's really only features are a towel, some coasters, and a few photos. How 'bout a freakin' commentary track? If the Coen brothers refuse then why not let the actors like Goodman, Bridges, Buscemi, and Turturro do it? This film is a cult classic and deserves better than this.

This Tuesday is going to be very expensive.

Lessee...

Batman Begins
Batman 4-Disk Anthology
He-Man Vol. 1
Legend of Zelda DVD
Ferngully SE

Mask of Zorro SE is tempting.

Gah. When is the 60's Batman TV show hitting DVD? Ever? Does anyone know what the problem is? It never came out on VHS either, that I remember.

I watched the 60's Batman movie the other day and like the TV show, it's near brilliant with the puns and double entendres and campy silliness. MORE 60's BATMAN!!

Copyrights. Warner owns the characters, FOX owns the show. I doubt you see it anytime soon.

Damn. You'd figure the two of them would reach some kind of deal for a DVD series, which would basically be a license to print money.

I agree.

Some predicted that the two companies would resolve their differences and release them in seperate volumes in early '05, just in time for the hype for the new movie.

Unfortunately, that never came to pass. Now there's no excuse for them to release the show, unless they want to wait for the sequel.

What's the difference between the two versions [of Emperor's New Groove and Tarzan]?

Both these new "special edition" releases are rehashes of their previous two-disc editions, stripped down to one disc. The two-disc edition of The Emperor's New Groove (the "Ultimate Edition") is still in print, but the two-disc edition of Tarzan is not.

By the way, are there any good reviews around for the Batman Anthology yet? I haven't seen any.

If it's similar to the Alien Quadrilogy box (in which the people interviewed for the extras freely admit that the last two films stink, and go into detail about what went wrong with them during production), then I'll pick it up. But if the commentary for Batman and Robin consists solely of Joel Schumacher going on about how he brought a new sense of fun back into the franchise, then I'll pick up the Burton movies and stop there.

Picked up Lifeboat last night, which is, as expected, a very nice disc. Also getting Land of the Dead and the R3 versions of Batman Begins, Batman: SE, and Batman Returns (identical content, but with far superior artwork all around and half the price of the R1 copies).

Schumacher is apparently quite the apologetic fool on the B&R commentary. Aside from claiming that he was trying to take things into high camp/family-friendly territory, he spends a good chunk of the track saying how sorry he is for the whole thing.

Too much stuff:

Buy:
Batman Begins
Batman Anthology
Saw: Uncut
The Big Lebowski: SE
Entourage: Season 1 (UMD)
Land of the Dead: Unrated

That being said, the special features on the Emperor's New Groove DVD are nothing special. People should be buying the movie anyways.
