Heat is the same disc as the original release just with new extras.

Only going to buy Get Shorty this week.

DVDFile (link) says the first disc is different from the old single-disc DVD--there's a commentary track, and slightly better video.

I've waited forever for this. My favorite anime movie of all time. :D

I might be getting Porco Rosso on Tuesday too, but that's going to depend on how much spare cash I have at the time.

i don't have any of the Shield DVD sets, but i always assumed they'd be in widescreen, or the pseudo-widescreen, that the show runs in on FX. Or maybe my memory is fuzzy

Both my Season 1 & 2 Shield dvds are Full screen, didn't really notice until you guys brought it up. I figure its fine since its a Tv show.

Shield's filmed in widescreen but full framed for DVD R1.

Looks like thats the case for Season 3 again according to DVD Empire.

Holding out for Region 2.

are the DVDs the same ratio as the TV show is presented in?

That should be the case and it looks like it is.

Review from the Second Season DvD R4.

"the R1 release is presented only in 1.33:1 Pan & Scan, which was the original broadcast ratio on cable in the US but not the original filming aspect ratio"

On our TV station had it broadcast in Widescreen. Hence Europe and Australia get

Maybe season 4 will be in Wide.

I think I read that it was the same video and audio as the original DVD release of Heat except for the commentary track with Michael Mann?

I have the original release so I was to buy it, but I think I will wait for the inevitabe HD re-release.

As for me, this week it's going to be South Park seasons one to five (the huge boxset), and Marmalade Boy volume 3. Maybe the Ghibli flicks, but the reviews don't give me a lot of hope. I will wait for comments on that.

XMonkey

lacks enthusiasm.
Crap...

I <3 Huckabees, Heat, and GT4 to buy this week. Wallets gonna be feeling a little lighter =(

I think some of you should think for future Bluray or HD-DVD re-releases when you buy DVDs. I always do.
But at that point we'll have to consider buying it now vs. waiting a bit for the next format. There's always something better coming.

What for?

Because of course a lot of movies are gonna be re-edited in HD. And when you will do HD, you won't want to go back, and there are a lot of your favorite DVDs you just will want to see in true HD with your new SED or LCD 1080p display. There are already so many movies I know I will be so tempted to buy on HD, that I stopped buying mainstream movies of big box-office movies altogether. I buy classics, tv shows (mostly anime), and cult movies, which will never be re-edited on HD-DVD or Blu-ray, or at least will not really benefit of the format.

Trust me, your wallet will thank you in the end. ;)

I wait for HD/BR versions of Ghibli flicks. They got ripped too much online, including here for me double dip. Hope next versions are much improved.

Kino and MoMA teaming up to release 140 Edison Company Films? Oh, hell yeah.

Meanwhile, along with the rest of the free world, I'll be picking up the Ghibli triple-feature. Also of interest on the anime front (and absolutely guaranteed to be overlooked this week):

Wacky mecha hijinx courtesy of our boy Tomino, who finally stopped taking himself so damned seriously. This is worth watching for the opening sequence alone, in which the entire cast (robots included) do the monkey. Tomino demonstrates how it should be done:

It's awesome.

Meanwhile, this has been out for a few weeks, but I figure it deserves to be pimped anyway. A friend and I rented Seijun Suzuki's Fighting Elegy last night:

I can absolutely guarantee that this is the most amusing film about gang violence, teenage sexual frustration, Catholic schoolgirls, and the rise of militarism in 1930's Japan that you will ever see. It's hysterical and is highly, highly recommended.

It's a Warner DVD, they never use DTS.

Not true. I have a few DTS Warner DVDs. Hell, they re-released Interview with the Vampire and Twister just to add DTS to them.

God that movie traumatized me as a kid.

"Look! Ferris Bueller! And a monkey! How... wait, this isn't funny."

That's dissapointing Heat has the greatest sounding Gunfight ever! No DTS is a crime. I don't want to get into a DTS vs Dolby Digital debate. Audiophiles can argue this all day, what I know is my ordinary ears find DTS a more pleasurable experience.

Best Buy has the new Ghibli releases for $17.99 each, so I'll be picking up Nausicaa and Porco Rosso, I didn't care too much for The Cat Returns.

I'll be getting Nausicaa, Porco Rosso and The Cat Returns. I would have also gotten The Amanda Show Volume 3, but they delayed it until some as yet revealed date! :(

The IGN review of Heat gave the audio a 6. WTF, the gunfight in Heat rocked is the DVD that bad or is IGN just out to lunch?

why would you wait for BR/HD-DVD for an animated movie?? Your really not going to get any better of a picture.

Actually yes you can, especially when they are using inferior transfers to start with. All guess work but perhaps next go around they treat the material with more respect.

I'm not really into gaynime but I figured I'd give a Miyazaki movie a chance since he is so praised... movie a chance since he is so praised...

Gaynime huh? Trying to offend two groups of people at once?

Yeah, I picked up Nausicaa today, but since they're good and cheap I may be going back for Porco Rosso.

Minotauro

Finds Purchase on Dog Nutz
Supposedly, Wal-Mart has the Ghibli releases for $15.99. Can anyone confirm?

Either way, it should be noted that Disney is running a promotion where, if you buy all three of the ones released today, you get one of their earlier releases for free.

Those are some good recommendations FnordChan, especially Fighting Elegy. That film is pure gold.

And...

B0006TPE4M.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

That is one sweet box art.

Each of the Ghibli releases has a "2005 Release" box near the lower righthand corner on the back of the case. Hrm.
