Television: Felicity S4; Andromeda S4, Friends S9, Green Acres S2, 21 Jump Street S2, Xena S6, Columbo S2, Fat Albert S1, Mole S1, Sweet Valley High S1.

Meh, the last two weeks have been pretty poor. I'll probably just grab a few things I have never got around to. CYE Season 2, and Sealab Season2 it is.

Just Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Bright Future this week.

I would like to see the 'Rings' short film that comes with the Ring re-issue, but it's not worth buying a second time for. Maybe if the bonus disc shows up on Ebay sometime...

As a curiosity (and one of the most extreme examples of studio meddling), Richard Williams' Thief & the Cobbler would probably be worth checking out. He and his team spent an unbelievable 30 years working on animating this -- entirely by hand. It was never allowed to be released in it's original form, and never will be now since the original prints have been lost or destroyed. It's apparently a real mess at this point (edits, cuts, and dubbing forced by Disney and Miramax) but I've heard the quality of the animation is simply astonishing.

Yep, was previously released in hacked form as "Arabian Knight." What's different about this new release (under the original title)?

EDIT: Looks like it's just the same version released on DVD (Arabian Knight was only on VHS). :( Doesn't restore any of the original "work print" footage.

There's an Australian DVD out, as well, under a slightly different title that does away with the studio dub, but is still butchered content-wise.

Bright Future, Paranoia Agent Vol. 3, and the Zatoichi box set are easily the highlights of the week. Also:

While not crucial, it's hard to go wrong with old-school Toshiro Mifune samurai goodness. I'll be sticking with my laserdisc copy.

Awful cover design, excellent anime. I'm holding out for the third Patlabor TV box set, else I'd be picking this up. I'm also glad to see AnimEigo plugging away with Urusei Yatsura Volumes 17-19, but I can't imagine anyone buying it at this point isn't just picking up the box sets as they're being released.

Why is the art so hideous?

Are there any sites with a review of the Zatoichi boxset? I just can't find a reliable site for DVD reviews...

I'm checking out the Kurasawa flick.

Anybody seen Dolls? By all accounts I've heard it's God-awful, but I'm a fan of Kitano, so I'll probably check it out.

Black Jack intrigues me as well. Pretty much anything based on Osamu Tezuka gets my attention.

Also this week: Soldier's Pay It's the documentary that David O. Russel made about the soldiers that inspired Three Kings.

Matrix

LeBron loves his girlfriend. There is no other woman in the world he’d rather have. The problem is, Dwyane’s not a woman.
Just friends season 9 for me.

Looks like there are only 7 of 26 Zatoichi movies included in the boxset.

The Zatoichi box being released this week contains all of the films that AnimEigo has the lincese for; the other 19 have been released by Home Vision Entertainment. Here are the films in the AnimEigo set:

# Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo (Zatoichi to Yojimbo)
# Zatoichi the Outlaw, aka The Blind Swordsman's Rescue (Zatoichi Royaburi)
# Zatoichi Goes to the Fire Festival (Zatoichi Abare Himatsuri)
# Zatoichi at Large (Zatoichi Goyotabi)
# Zatoichi in Desperation (Shin Zatoichi Monogatari: Oreta Tsue)
# Zatoichi's Conspiracy (Shin Zatoichi Monogatari: Kasama No Chimatsuri)
# Zatoichi meets the One-Armed Swordsman (Shin Zatoichi: Yabure! Tojinken)

All of these have already been released seperately, so reviews should be available for all of the individual releases.

Edit: Looks l ike HVE only has 17 of the other Zatoichi flicks, with at least one of the others overlapping with AnimEigo's license. Dunno what that means for the last two films, but I'm sure they're either out there somewhere or licensed and just waiting for a release.
