Straight to video:

Also available in a lovely box set. I like the way that the box art here is designed to reassure you that, yes, every single film does have at least one softcore lipstick lesbian hookup scene:

And there's the usual pile of TV box sets: ER season 3 is in there, and Highway to Heaven season 1.

I'd definitely suggest a rent for Assassination of Richard Nixon and Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. 2 of my favorite movies from last year.

No longer boycotting the Wolfenstein franchise
I'll rent Lemony Snicket. I was rather curious about it, and I did a lot of reading about the cinematography, so I'd like to see that in its final form too.

No buys for me next week. I've picked up a lot of older movies recently, and I grabbed Harvey Birdman yesterday, so I'm going to take it easy for a little, especially with the onslaught in May...

'F for fake' looks cool. I love Criterion box art. Their early stuff was vile, but they got really good in the last years, too bad their dvds are so expensive :| I dont really want to pay dvd prices I used to pay back in 1998 :|

^^^ Oh man that was such a great season! Hopefully the price is right.

Yeah I'd buy it just for the picture of Elisabeth on the front and its not even a good pic of her. :D

Found a copy of Enduring Love yesterday (nearly two weeks early) so I'll consider that part of my weekly haul. :) Also grabbing David Gordon Green's Undertow and my French 2-disc of A Very Long Engagement is on the way (because the R1 was delayed until July).

I've got a bit of a thing for Anna Paquin, so I could see myself buying this if the price is right, even if it sucks (which it probably does).

I'm renting Lemony Snicket's...I read the first 6 or so books last summer and the film seems like a really fun little romp.

just undertow. though amazon has it going for 20 bux which is a lot, really.

f for fake is going to make a lot of people really upset.

Christ, Criterion seems to have the best designers in the world doing their covers. Makes me want to get every single set that they release.

whats this undertow movie about? any good?

it's a southern remake of Night of the Hunter, as if terrance malick directed it. philip glass score. the first line of the movie is "Can I carve my name in your face?"

Must get Series of Unfortunate Events!!!

About the Survivor DVD... isn't it kind of lame that they give away the winner on the cover? =/ Sure most people probably already know the winners of most seasons, but I didn't follow a few of the middle seasons and have no idea who won. When those DVDs come out I guess it's going to be spoiled for me. =P

For those who haven't seen Lemony Snicket, I'd suggest that it really is a "try before you buy" sort of movie. I thought it was decent... but I don't think I've got much desire to watch it again.

No doubt. I find humor in how a small company like Criterion puts the artwork from the majors to shame.

You do realize that's a picture of that Pete and Pete girl in Eurotrip, right?

Also, that's just wrong.

It came up when I image searched for her, I just assumed. PLS forgive me. I'll leave it fot its wonderful composition though.

Hot damn! I can only hope this does well enough to justify a second volume, as I'd love to have a copy of Vormittagsspuk (Ghosts Before Breakfast).

Could this cover possibly be more sensationalistic?

Now, tell me that wouldn't make for one helluva double feature. Finally, a memo from the Department of Unintentional Amusement:

that looks like an alpha cover, they do some awful PD transfers (though their Impact is okay). i think kino has a good looking birth of a nation out (as well as intolerence)

A far superior package all around, and definately more interesting than a $7 bargin release of a public domain flick. Kino rules.

To be honest, it's been so long since I've seen this feature (also known as Walther P-38) that I can't really say; I saw it unsubbed years ago and after a while the Lupin TV specials start to blur together. However, I've seen a whole helluva lot of Lupin in general, and it's all reasonably entertaining. Some movies are much better than others, but the formula is pretty difficult to screw up, so there's a minimum standard that Lupin consistently lives up to. So, while this special might not be one of the real gems of the Lupin library, it's worth at least a rental.

If you're looking for more Lupin to watch (and I'm assuming you've already seen Castle of Cagliostro), give Mystery of Mamo a rental. It's the first Lupin theatrical release, released a year before Cagliostro, and has a somewhat different flavor to it; it's very over the top and it's very, very 70s. It's also not what you would call incredibly coherant, but it does have enough visual style to make up for a less-than-stellar plot. In a similar vein, Gold of Babylon is fun in the "Lupin as slapstick" vein. Be warned that Babylon kicks off with an interminable motorcycle chase scene, but after that you get to see the glory of Zenigata's Angels, so it all works out in the end.

As soon as Lupin III: First Contact comes out, I'll be pimping that; it's the best Lupin feature I've seen in ages.
