(This looks like the same DVD that's in the three-disc limited edition of Black Tie White Noise--it's got good stuff, but as packaged here it's overpriced.)

Smells faintly of rancid stilton.
Wow alone in the Dark already, must have been extra craptacular.

I love Hoop Dreams, so that for sure. Most Likely 12 Monkeys, and Joan of Arcadia - The First Season later.

I really liked The Royal Tenenbaums. Will I like The Life Aquatic?

Probably. Personally I think it's the weakest of Wes' films (though I haven't seen Bottle Rocket). It's still quite good but it doesn't shape up to Rushmore and Tanenbaums, which are both much better in my opinion.

Don't let that stop you though, Life Aquatic is still a good film.

for the Futurama DVD, i have not heard that they are repackaging any of the Season sets but if you follow the Complete list link you get a listing for "Futurama Monster Robot Maniac Fun Collection." Its a compilation of various episodes from Futuramas 4 seasons with some new bonus features. Though it looks like this DVD is delayed until August here is what it actually contains:

From Gotfuturama.com:

From Season 1: Hell is Other Robots
From Season 2: Anthology of Interest I
From Season 3: Roswell That Ends Well
From Season 4: The Sting

As posted earlier, the "Futurama Monster Robot Maniac Fun Collection" DVD set got its original release date postponed. David X. Cohen tells me that the new US date is now tentatively set to August 23, 2005.

The extras on the collection are becoming more clear now, too.

* An overall intro by Matt Groening and the gang (Billy West, John Dimaggio, David X. Cohen, Producer Claudia Katz, and Supervising Director Rich Moore).
* Individual intros to each of the four episodes "Hell is Other Robots", "Anthology of Interest I", "Roswell That Ends Well" and "The Sting".
* Smaller extras (possibly easter eggs) might include photos and/or very early notes from the development of Futurama.
* A long animatic of "Hell is Other Robots", with full-length commentary by all of the above noteed people. As a special treat, you will get to hear David X. Cohen filling in for one or two of the Beastie Boys on their a-capella version of "Sabotage", since the Beasties hadn't been recorded yet at that time.

Cohen says there will be no extra charge for the last one. However, there will also be no refunds given on account of this.

What's new about this 12 Monkey release?

Just a mildly improved transfer. The extras are identical to the previous release (minus the DTS from the original SE).

The original SE didn't have DTS. Back then, Universal did the Collector's Edition while also doing a bare-bones DTS release.

More gloriously absurdist school thug humor. I have to give the ADV full credit for their terrific, album-based cover art.

How has no one mentioned Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu yet? I saw it at my college's anime club, and I was ROTF. Awesome.

Wow shocked by the lack of Hoop Dreams Love, it is easily on of the best Doccumentry ever.

Hoop Dreams will only be $17.99 at Best Buy if i remember the ads from Saturday correctly. That price is a friggin steal for a Criterion. Also, doesn't In Living Color S3 come out this week?

There are single- and double-disc editions of The Life Aquatic--maybe different covers for them both? (Or one with a slip and one without?)

I just found out that 'Hoop Dreams', one of my favorite documentaries, is FINALLY going to be released on DVD today. Man it's been a while since I saw this film, powerful stuff! I remember it got all kinds of nominations and had people sitting down having good open conversations.

Hoop Dreams!!

http://www.lasersedge.com/item_detail.asp?id=60705&tMedia=1

Two extraordinary inner-city kids dare to dream the impossible—professional basketball glory—in this epic chronicle of hope and faith. Filmed over a five-year period, Hoop Dreams follows young Arthur Agee and William Gates as they navigate the complex, competitive world of scholastic athletics while striving to overcome the intense pressures of family and the realities of their Chicago streets. The Criterion Collection is proud to presents this landmark documentary chronicling two remarkable families who challenge the American dream.

Directed By: Steve James

Starring: Isiah Thomas, Dick Vitale, Spike Lee, Bobby Knight, Kevin O’Neill, Arthur Agee , William Gates

This documentary is what put the final nail in the coffin of my fandom of major league sports (this and living next door to IU athletes for 4 years). Not to get to deep, but this documentary is something every sports fan should watch. It's a gripping tale of two young kids in the Chicago trying to make a future career for themselves by playing high school basketball (and hopefully college ball) against tremendous adversity. They follow these kids form middle school all the way to graduation. I guess it effected me deeply becuase I could relate to what these youngsters had to go through, and to see all the games, politics, and money that goes into shaping tomorrows future stars. It's kinda sickening actually. I guess I shouldn't take it so seriously, but like I said I just can't support major sports anymore. But I'm digressing. You may watch this and get a whole different perspective.

If you can I seriously urge you to check this film out, it really provides a different insight on the sports world. I going to tear this town up looking for a copy!

Why is there a second boxart? Is the first just a slip, a la The Royal Tenanbaums?
Yes, the pic of the sub is just the slip, and this is the interior, just like the Tenenbaums setup.

Has the vietnam epiosde, the mental hospital epiosde and the fabled, "cursed" episode

Damn, I still need to buy Season Two.

SciFi is airing the show all day today and "Goodbye Norma Jean" is on right now. Awesome episode. It's the Marilyn Monroe episode:

Sam: Al, what am I doing here?
Al: Heh, who cares?

Someone tell me why I don't like The Life Aquatic. :( Watched probably half of it, didn't like it one bit. The jokes were just so... slooooow, or something, didn't really get it at all. I must suck.
