After seeing his stock rise from starring in Fast Five, Dwayne Johnson is in talks to join another sequel. I'm told Johnson is in discussions with Paramount to join G.I. Joe: Cobra Strikes. That's the overhauled sequel that'll be directed by Jon M. Chu, who helmed Justin Bieber: Never Say Never. Johnson's role is a character named Roadblock.

I'm also hearing that Channing Tatum is a good bet to return. The picture has become an important one for Paramount, which will have to scratch the Star Trek sequel from its summer 2012 schedule and will likely put this film in its place.

After Johnson helped boost The Fast and the Furious franchise (he's also in talks to be part of the sixth film in that franchise), Paramount hopes he can help here as well. The studio had no comment. Developing...

Sucks for Paramount.

I have some faith this will be Fast Five-esque entertainment. If Chu can make street dancing and Bieber entertaining, I have no doubt he could do the same for G.I. Joe after that terrible first movie. He certainly has a better grasp at what audiences want, more-so than Sommers.

What happened to Star Trek? Anyone know?
Didn't Abrams say he was going to get involved with it and direct? And I guess he wants a full year plus to make it the way he wants to make it. There is a thread about it recently on here...

Here you go.

Uh...hopefully it's better than the 2009 movie with its nonexistent storyline and boring, generic characters...
Now I'm confused. We're talking about GI Joe here, right? lol

I actually thought GI Joe wasn't too terrible, but that may be because I had no expectations of liking it at all and saw it for five bucks. Thought there was some good stuff in it, some ridiculous stuff, and just a mindless but well enough made action flick. Not that I am super excited for a sequel or anything, but it wouldn't anger me. Meh.

Wait I checked the wikipedia and it claims JGL will not be returning for the sequel. Welp I'll be passing this one up.

The Rock already looks like a living action figure so he would fit well as a G.I.Joe character. I'd say Roadblock isn't a good choice for him but I doubt they'll have the character talking in rhymes like the cartoon. Not getting my hopes up for this movie to be any good(fun) though.

Somehow should have filled him in on how this is doomed to suck.

Oh yeah man cause He's been in so many great movies like The Tooth Fairy, the Game plan, gridiron gang, Doom.

Shit this is just below the Rock's standards.

This movie is going to be an utter clusterfuck on so many levels. No Barroness, no Destro, no Joseph Gorden-Levitt or possibly Cobra Commander, no Skarlett, no General Hawk and pretty much the only three characters being brought back are Duke, who was absolutely wretched; Snake Eyes, who admittedly was fucking awesome and Storm Shadow, who is fucking dead.

Even going beyond that, since GI Joe has a gigantic cast of characters, it's directed by a guy who's one claim to fame is god awful dance movies. He's filming this as a "gritty" take on the Joes and production is being rushed to meet an impending deadline that was vacated because the movie that would be there can't be completed in time because it hasn't started production yet.

I didn't mind the original, and thought it had a lot of promise as the first in a series. But this is going to absolutely be terrible on so many levels to the point people will wish Sommers had stayed on with the franchise.

That doesn't really make any sense though cause doesn't Universal make a fuckton of movies and have multiple summer blockbusters under their belt?

Why even go get GI JOE for their "Summer blockbuster" ? To fill in Transformers void? Yeahhhhh

This is Paramount, not Universal. And with them losing the Marvel movies, I don't think they have anything planned for next summer. Though with the relative lack of anything coming out of Mission: Impossible, wouldn't be surprised to see them push it back to next summer.

Well if he thinks he's making a proper return to action by following Fast Five with this, he oughta be informed, brah.

I guess, but it'll be pretty damn hard to get me to see another Rock film.

Yes!

But please keep that wooden white asshat out of it.

Also hilarious to see black character get race swapped. I still say LL Cool J would have been perfect as Roadblock, but I'll take Dwayne Johson.

Just for the love of christ get rid of whiteboy. He was terrible as Duke. TERRIBLE!

I actually enjoyed the first one too, the CGI is probably the worst I've ever seen in a big budget action film.

But the link for JGL said "You can call me Commander" made it all worth it.

well what's the fucking point?

They never said those characters won't be in the movie, simply the original actors playing those characters are not returning. It's obvious they will recast most of them like CC and Destro.

They made a white character black with Ripcord in the first movie, don't see the issue.

Cobra Commander is the only one that has really been talked around about returning. He can be easily replaced. But the director, can't even think of his name, has talked about wanting to bring in a primarily new cast of Joes, and something about portraying them in "the mud" and such. Just give me a campy sequel to Sommers' movie, I thought it worked well enough as a live action cartoon, which is what I expect out of a GI Joe movie.

There really are no concrete details and also any character info has been extremely vague other than us knowing some actors aren't coming back. Destro is easy to replace as well now being stuck in the metal mask.

The Joes themselves are pretty easy to replace and there is tons of repetition in characters when it comes to styles/personalities. Snake Eyes sadly is the most important Joe and always was in the comics..... still laugh at how they changed the name of the GI Joe comic to "Snake Eyes" with GI Joe in small letters on the bottom.

Jesus this man has done nothing but dance movies. He even has his own dance crew.

from wiki:

In an interview, Chu addressed a question he is often asked, "Why do all of your films have dance?" He responded, "I don’t know why. It seems so obvious. But there’s something about the dancers that motivate me the most. I don’t know if it’s just dance, but I do think that the dancers are amazing artists, and every time I meet a new dancer, that triggers something in my brain, and I’m more creative than I could ever be. When I feel that creativity burst, I go with it."

Dance scene in GI joe confirmed!

It's not an issue, just a rarity that it works in reverse order.

Plus Ripcord was one of the better characters in the first movie Wayans haters.

Please Zod, re-cast Duke!
