E3 After-Party Thread: Highlights/Lowlights

So, well, E3 is basically over. It totally is. I know, that shit sucked, right? Well! ITT we write our highlights, our lowlights, our oddities and those things that just annoyed us.

Highlight - The Zelda: Twilight Princess trailer. If there's one thing that delivered on all its promises without any catches, it would have to be this. We got to see just what kind of secrets they had up their sleeves for gameplay. We got to find out that the music would be fully orchestrated - and then we got to hear how fantastic the music was for ourselves with the trailer. It's good to be a Zelda fan, no doubt.

Honorable Mention - The Sony Press Conference. Regardless of how you felt about the various aspects of the presentation, few can deny that they know what E3 is about and they know how to play to the crowds. And they did that, with a mix of real-time and CG demos. It was the first "big" press conference, and it set the tone - the others simply could not match the destructive power of the bomb that Sony dropped during the show. It was the sound of a titan moving a mountain, and all stood up and listened. War has begun.

Lowlight - PSP E3 Lineup. If you had to say before the show that, for the most part, the system would be ignored by Sony and the big guns would be pulled out for DS instead of PSP, I'd probably be hesistant to believe that. But here it is. DS had a (overall) phenomenal showing, with games I really want - Mario and Luigi 2 DS, Mario Kart DS online, etc - and the PSP pulled out Lemmings and Monster Hunter. Which is fine, mind you, but it just didn't have any of the power that its rival did for sheer gaming greatness. A definite let down all around.

(Dis)Honorable Mention - Tina Woods playing Nintendogs at the Nintendo PC. Oh, we should have expected that Nintendogs would be at the PC in some major capacity. But that didn't change the fact that it was still one of the most embarrasing display of unabashed lameness possibly ever in any pre-E3 press conference. Nevermind the fact that it was topped off by Miyamoto's joking sexual advances on Miss Woods.

Oddities - Reggie Dance. The electroplankton new agey rave was capped off by what can only be described as an attempt to ride an invisible horse. But boy was it odd. I think my friend Omnicock seeing Coolio was also odd, but this was the cake taker.

Ugly - FrameCity Killers. I watched a video, and I viewed screencaps... and fuck, this game is ugly. I guess I would have to realize the "GTA scope" to appreciate its ugly, but I think next-gen can do much better for even an open-ended game experience like this is supposed to be. Ugly.

I pretty much agree with that. DS might be a POS machine technicaly, but atleast it had some strong games on this show. I will eat up games like Mario Kart DS online.

Awesome! Thanks for the impressions.

One thing though:

Edit- Bah, on second thought, I see what your saying.

FLAWLESS POST

DS beating the PSP to a pulp at E3 is questioning my faith in gaming. :(

I think some of the 360 stuff looked cool, like Elder Scrolls, Condemned, DoA4.

What happened to all the PS2 exclusive announcments hinted at Pre E3? I didn't see them.

Oh, and I couldn't find out much about F.E.A.R. at E3. My most wanted PC game GIVE ME INFOS.

Yeah, I was just saying that they delivered on bringing the hype, and that's a very important thing for these sorts of presentations. Whether they will live up to the hype... wait for TGS and/or E3 2006 ;)

Before people's expectations are dashed upon the game's release, it needs to be more widely pointed out that only some of the music will be orchestrated, for certain cutscenes for example. So it's a mix rather than fully.

I agree, especially with what you said about the DS. Nintendo's booth seemed a little weak overall, but the DS section (which was about half of what was displayed) was surprisingly strong. The DS was also present in many of the company booths. I didn't see as many PSPs, and didn't see many games that were really all that interesting

Highlight - Sony PS3 blowout

Sony stole the show on Monday, Microsoft looked dazed and confused by comparison. All the quality demo reals (RENDERED OR NOT) were just amazing.

Honorable Mention

Microsoft's post-conference recovery. Say what you will about the lack of "wow" visuals at the conference, I think Microsoft's floor presence and product unveilings helped them recover nicely and save face.

Lowlight - Nintendo

No concrete Revolution info, no compelling software coming for GameCube other than Zelda, such a focus on niche DS games at the press conference. Stick a fork in them because they are done.

(Dis)Honorable Mention

Lack of product announcements from BioWare. :( I know they have stuff in the works and I'm excited to see it. Give me some game titles, concept art, something. :(

Oddities - Starcraft Ghost next year?

Ugly - Current Generation Games - I'm already spoiled.

How did the PSP drop the ball like this?
Developers don't have the resources to make ps2 level games for a handheld? That's one quote I heard from the castlevania people that struck a cord.

That really won't hurt it in my eyes if all the music is as mind-fuckin' good as the stuff in the trailer. Jesus Christ, imho arguably one of the best Zelda melodies ever. And it's just in a trailer!

Meh, this was one of the weakest E3's I've been to. This negativity is all regarding the trade show itself, and not the great PS3 blowout that ocurred. The games that I saw that were interesting to say the least;

Daxter PSP: Video only, but seeing the lil guy made me happy.

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars: Holy shit, I'm so gonna need a new rig of this baby next year.

Ultimate Spider-Man: E3 People's choice winner. Damn fuckin right. You can look at it and say its just another Spidey game with great swinging, but the style this game has, in its cut scene, the comic book panels and dialogue, holy shit. Not many games have style anymore, this does.

Other than that, I wasnt too impressed. I'm sure everyone is hard at work on their next gen stuff, so this really can't be THAT Great of an E3. I'm sure next year EVERYONE will have something to blow our minds with.

Oh yes. That is really the highlight for me as well. Everything in the trailer flows so very well and ends on such a perfect note. Whoever edited that together has my respect, as does whoever did the first one (Aonuma actually, I think).

Anyone have links to non-watermarked quicktime or avi versions of the other two trailers by any chance? They're not on nintendo.com anymore from what I can tell.

My own lowlight would have to be a tie between Revolution and PD0.

Revolution because it sounds like it's going to be absolutely lackluster in everything but its online service, and made only for a specific audience. I don't have faith in Nintendo's controller. I don't see anything that can change the face of gaming at this point without going into VR.

Perfect Dark Zero because well, the first one is my favorite FPS ever. I'm disappointed that there's no footage, and I certainly would have purchased an X360 for it if it looked good. I'm still hoping that they're gonna pull through with this and make it kickass. At least they've got the laptop gun in there.

For serious. There's pretty much no way for this game to go wrong, it just is so awesome and people who have played it say it plays awesome too. So, really, Nintendo was on the ball with this little gem. Gamecube gonna go out with fireworks.

I was disappointed in the limited Revolution showing, but I can't really call it a lowlight because we just don't know what they will offer to that end. I just don't want to bring the hammer down without something more solid to condemn them on, ya know?

Reggie is the best Marketing personality to ever grace the video game industry :lol He kicks ass, takes names, and now busts out dancing moves during PC. How can anyone ignore his awesomeness!!

A personal surprise for me would be Genji, it was really cool and perfectly playable. Beautiful use of colors and the mind-something-system was really fun, when you activate it, wait for the enemies to attack and then press square in that very moment to gracefully move aside and slash them. The new Onimusha was cool as well, but Genji was more interesting to me, actually. Almost like it was better at Onimusha than Onimusha. :lol

I saw another highlight today, the MGS4 trailer. I mean, come on...it was hilarious, and even more so when you realize it didn't really have much meaning other than telling us that MGS4 is coming for PS3. So it was basically Kojima fooling around just for the sake of it. :lol

One disappointment was the PSP E3 lineup, it was weak. Pursuit Force was OK, Virtua Tennis was Virtua Tennis and rather liked Dead to Rights as well but...why no GTA? They've put up ads for the game all around LA...maybe it was shown behind closed doors or something.

Another disappointment was the real-time mode in Advance Wars DS. I was hoping for some decent RTS action. Instead I got to control one lousy unit at a time, driving around shooting at the enemy on a small map. Bleh.

Yet another disappointment was that I missed out on Ratchet Deadlock. It looked really cool, but I forgot to try it out. :(

I think my friend Omnicock seeing Coolio was also odd, but this was the cake taker.

I saw Coolio by the Namco booth, and he was talking into a video camera someone was pointing at him. But Coolio is a mere mortal, and he was no match for the giant Katamari ball 10 feet to the right of him, along with someone in a Prince of Space suit posing for several adoring fans' cameras. I don't think anyone else noticed he was there :lol

Hahaha, that's almost surreal.

Highlight - The Zelda: Twilight Princess. Just seeing the amazing trailer at Nintendo's conference sold me on the game. I will now go back to trying to avoid reading/viewing anything about the game in order to have the most surprising and best experience when I actually play the game for the first time.

Honorable Mentions - Kameo: Elements of Power and Sony's press conference. Kameo is shaping up to be an amazing game that I can't wait to play. Plus it looks so good and that new huge battlefield with a thousand enemies just seems unreal. Sony's conference, despite all the pre-renderedness, really wowed me. Totally unmatched by the two others.

Lowlight - PSP E3 Lineup. What the fuck is going on here? Where are the games? There was nothing particularly compelling outside of the GTA announcement, but we haven't even seen the game. For all we know, it could end up being yet *another* remixed game that doesn't feel new. And I still want my goddamned PSP Castlevania no matter what IGA says. There's a serious problem when the DS lineup is actually making me consider buying a DS.

(Dis)Honorable Mention - Next-gen console unveilings. Other than Kameo on Xbox 360, nothing really struck me. Everything just seems the same garbage we've seen before, sometimes even worse, all coated up in "pretty" (not so pretty Xbox 1.5) graphics. Also pulling Perfect Dark Zero from the showfloor was weak. Why haven't we seen anything from the single player mode? I bet it doesn't look half as bad as the multiplayer. PS3 was only an empty box with an ugly controller, and pre-rendered crap. Let's not even talk about Revolution...

Oddities - I'm surprised Sony hasn't said anything about their online plans. They know they have to compete with Microsoft in that department, and Microsoft had pretty much already revealed everything about Live 2... so why hide the PS3 online plans?

Ugly - Square guy saying "There is no FF7 remake in the works" after showing us the FF7 real-time trailer. I wanted to KILL.

I agree! It bugged the hell outta me that Square would waste all that time and resources to make that awesome demo just for Sony's E3 PC, only to turn around and throw all those assets away. It doesn't add up... :\

Haha, Drinky is the man. Honestly though, I think that somewhere down the line a FFVII remake is likely. They already have some assest to work off of as it is. FFVII remake would be HUGE, and would really help the FF line, as I feel it's slipping a bit (too much of a gap between FFX and FFXII).

Highlights: Sony Press Conference, Viewtiful Joe DS [smoooooth], Castlevania CoD [doesn't suck!], Zelda.

Lowlights: Full Auto/Condemned/Shadow [Sega averageness in full force], No interesting PSP games playable from Japanese developers, Need for Speed 360 [meh]. No Ninja Gaiden Black to play ;_;

Oddities: Wanda being a mix of beautiful and ugly visuals [art vs. framerate]; my friend asking the 3 Wayan brothers, "Is in Living Color is going to get back together?" in a conference room, lack of cool booths to walk through and take pictures, and again the idea that Castlevania in 3d is fun! Oh and power outages killing the UT2k7 showings >_<

Castlevania CoD doesn't suck?

It's not "OMG great!!!" but it with lots of weapons and a great familiar/summon system it's a lot more like say the 3rd GBA one in 3d than the straightfoward DMC-style of the first PS2 attempt. The game has problems and won't be any kind of a 9+ game, but the demo was fun stuff and if the full game is like that then 'most' castlevania fans will be pleased.

My my my, that is good news.

Highlight - thing Hmm. Tough one. Considering I didn't have time for the Zelda line I can't really honestly say Twilight Princess, but I know I probably would have if I did. I wanted to say Spore, too...

Honorable Mention - 24. I've been worrying about how this one would turn out ever since it was announced way back when but it's actually looking like they're going to nail it. Big thanks to Fowler for showing it to me. They solved a lot of the problems that's inherent in the license as best they could, I think. The interrogation stuff worked really nicely. The environments are slightly low poly by necessity (so they can do that multiple angle thing which especially shines in the driving sequences) but generally looks and sounds..."right". I'm sure it's not going to win any awards or anything, but it's the game I was most relieved to see turn out so well. Also - New Super Mario Bros (Mario VS Luigi - great idea). OH! Almost forgot. Rebelstar Command on GBA! VERY VERY GOOD. I'm abig Laser Squad / X-Com fan and this is like that but with Advance Wars style graphics. Great work Codo for developing it and great work Majesco for publishing it!

Lowlight - Closed booths. Seriously, why the set up a booth if you don't want to show your stuff off. If you insist on having a private party, do us all a favour and shut the fucking music off. Thanks. I swear so many companies had closed booths, which considering how expensive this shit is...

(Dis)Honorable Mention - Apparently Sony released a PSP, but God knows what happened to that. There was more booth space devoted to the fucking N-Gage than PSP stuff. As other people have posted here, it's making the DS look good. The lines. I had maybe 4 hours total throughout the 3 days to explore, and I wasn't wasting it on any line.

Oddities - The bible game at the same booth as the poker game. Just being at E3 in general, really :) Booth babes are back it seemes!

Ugly - Lizzy McGuire. Whoever produced that s the motherfucking maaaaaan. ;)

for what it was worth, I enjoyed LOI. :lol

I'm going to buy a DS now.

Sonic Rush baby, SONIC RUSH.

Also, Full Auto's not too shabby. It's all about the "unwreck" feature. Sega's booth was the strongest I've seen it in a couple years, especially if you factor in the promise of what they showed in the theater.

OH! Almost forgot. Rebelstar Command on GBA! VERY VERY GOOD. I'm abig Laser Squad / X-Com fan and this is like that but with Advance Wars style graphics. Great work Codo for developing it and great work Majesco for publishing it!
Excellent. This game will be mine.

Highlights: Backwards compattibility for Xbox 360 and PS3. If they make them code free now that would be the best news ever. Also the support for Xbox 360 from Squareenix.

Lowlights:

- Starcraft Ghost looks uglier than last year and seems extremly far away from meeting the high standards for a Blizzard game.

- Sony's press conference was boring as hell. I was so tired when they finally stopped with the tecnical blabla and showed the prerendered stuff, that I couldn't enjoy it.

- Sony completely ignored their other platforms. It was all about the PS3. They could have spent 10 Minutes of their PC to show some PSP stuff and maybe a bit more than a Final Fantasy XII trailer for their PS2.

- Nintendo demonstrated that they had nothing interresting to show at the E3 expect Zelda. Basicly they showed the same games as last year and a piece of hardware that's going to be completely different when it come's out. Oh, and they are going to sell you the same games again.

- Another E3 and no Shenmue 3 announcement :(

Wha? It looks the same or better graphically, and plays so much better...

Well, I can only judge by what I've seen watching the two videos at IGN and those looked awkward and far worse than the videos shown at E3 2004 IIRC. I would be extremely happy to be wrong on that, though. :)

Oddities: Despiting the still rampant trolling mods have been unusually soft with everyone. I was hopping for a 100 bans hypercombo, you let me down GAF =(

*Any other impressions have been adressed in this thread, so much common sense =P

I agree. It was good to see "24" coming along nicely. It was one of the few games on the floor that I actually wanted to play. Bauer's such a dick when he's interrogating - it's great.

Lowlight - getting crushed waiting to get a pass for the Xbox 360 Conference.
Highlight - OK, it was pretty exciting when Kutaragi whipped out the PS3.

Good news

Highlight - Revolution details from the Nintendo press conference. This was my megaton. While the details were sparse, what was revealed was pretty exciting to me. Iwata essentially confirmed Revolution would be similar to competitors in terms of specs, but would also have advances not relating to gameplay. I can only imagine what that could be. The downloadable Nintendo archive is going to be awesome, especially when 3rd parties sign up. And we now know the controller is one of the more revolutionary features... but we have to wait around 6 months to find out why. Oh well. I thought it was a great presentation. Really gets you thinking. And unlike Sony, Nintendo didn't show off unrealistic CG demos. And like Microsoft, Revolution wasn't playable ;)

Honourable Mention - Spore! Looks like one of the most innovative games at the show. And it looks fun too!

Lowlight - Phantom was a no show :(

Highlight-This gen still has some life left in it! Burnout 4, Black, Guitar Hero, Shadow of the Collusus, Zelda TP, Fire Emblem GC and Phantasy Star Universe cememted my decision to let the PS2 (and GC, to a lesser extent) hold me over for hte rest of the year.

Lowlight-Next gen was unimpressive to me. Sony's show had a lot of hype, but you can tell they are a long ways away. MS did nothing to impress me. I was actually really considering getting a 360 and was hyped for it, but now im probably going to pass. The only games that really interest me for the launch period are just upgraded ports and almost all sports games. I mean, Madden 360 should be awesome, but its not the game that will get me to drop $300 this fall on a new system. Gears of War looked awesome, but its almost a year and a half away!

your megaton was Nintendo confirming it does shit like the competitors have already done, and then showing off an empty (admittedly sexy) box?

Wow, your expectations WERE low :P

Amir0x, I wouldn't really change anything to your original post, although for me, the lack of almost any Revolution info could perhaps tie as a lowlight or dishonorable mention, as well as Nintendo's relatively asstastic GC lineup.

Eh, fans of the show will love it, no doubt. Everyone else shouldn't get too excited, the main draw is the license, not the gameplay.

Highlight: Zelda Exibit.

I went on the last day of the show and prior to this experience, had already picked out my best booth of show (now my strong runner up). The first section of Zelda was cool as while playing Zelda, a Costumed Link came up to me and put his hands on my shoulders (sexual advances???). As I was going to the second section or dungeon part of the room, I turned a corner and to my immediate left was a HUGE Stalfos knight. It was animated by a human puppeteer, but was very very convincing. It was behind bars and was banging his sword on it as people passed through it. While taking a picture I yelled out "Give me something!" like a fool. The freaking Stalfos slowly twisted its sword vertically an thrusted it within inches of my face! I freaked out for a second but loved every second of it. I'll try to post pictures in the next couple of days.

Runner up: EA booth.

Visual Overload. It was like being in a planetarium displaying HD EA 360 games. Fantastic.

Lowlight: NGage booth.

Oh god, this was bad. it was a huge areana setting so it was very open....and empty. Its not like people could find it (seeing as it was besides the xbox and capcom booths) :lol

Runner up: Saint Row

Think GTA violence with a protagonist who has the charisma of Poochy (yes from Scratchy and Itchy)
