By year's end, Electronic Arts plans to release 26 new games, all but one of them a sequel, including the 16th version of N.H.L. Hockey, the 11th of the racing game Need for Speed and the 13th of the P.G.A. Tour golf game. The company also relies heavily on creating games based on movies like the James Bond and Lord of the Rings series, rather than developing original brands.

Godfather?

Odd, I am getting annoyed with the EA hate. The are still funding Spore, right?

Edit: ...although their logo popping up in the middle of playing the Sims 2 drives me nuts. Grr

BETTER DEAD THAN RED

THEY CAN NEVER TAKE AWAY OUR FREEDOM

His complaint underscores a potential problem for Electronic Arts, which has suffered financial setbacks this year. Increasingly, industry analysts and game reviewers are wondering if the company's dependence on sequels is a sign that it is losing its creative edge.

LMAO...creative edge? :D :lol

They've been uncreative and relied on sports sequels for years

Consumers have slowed their buying of video games in recent months in anticipation of the release of two new video game consoles - the Xbox 360, scheduled for release from Microsoft later this year, and the PlayStation 3, due out from Sony next year.

Missing from the list again.

Im sorry they cant read this post they're too busy playing the scrooge mc duck game in their swimming pools of gold coins. All that matters is one Maddens revenue alone will pay for 25 of those titles developement, and two since they bought everything under the sun .....they'll have the next sims game to make profit :P.

Most of the games I am really looking forware to are sequels..

Halo 3

RE5

MGS4

GTA4

GT5

Forza2

PGR3

Winning Eleven 10

Sonic

VF5

Ridge Racer 6

Mario 128

Metroid Prime 3

So what if they are sequels?

EA's creative streak died when the Genesis did, but yeah, everyone makes (or wants) sequels. You certainly can't fault them for that

What's more important around here - a good game or an original one?

I'd take a fun, enjoyable sequel over a mediocre original title any day.

Though on saying that the new James Bond game makes me want to hurt people.

You know, there's enough bitching about how they make nothing but sequels, but if I were asked what I wanted EA to make, they would all be sequels anyway. Syndicate, C&C, Populous... The fact that they'd rather churn out infinite sequels to sports titles than sate my megalomaniac desires still pisses me off though.

Good point, but it's sort of the job of developers to, ya know, develop titles that we don't even know that we want yet.

That being said, I'd gladly take a new System Shock, Ultima, Crusader, Wasteland, MULE, Command and Conquer, etc...

What really annoys me about EA is the fact that they are one of the biggest and most wealthy game companies in the world. They arent in a position where they need to worry about a title bombing. But do they ever even try to create new IP's? Do they ever try to create new genres or at least better the existing ones? Do they ever try anything new?

They are the biggest liscense whores out there. If there is a big blockbuster movie you can bet that EA will buy out the liscense in no time. They rely on these liscenses to relieve their more sub-standard dev studios. Afterall, it doesnt matter how shit the software is, if it has a popular liscense it will sell......thats the bottom line for you.

I can understand why smaller game companies would rely on sequels and liscenses. They can't afford failures. But EA? They are just cowards.

I totally agree and have said almost the exact samething in the past. It's ridiculous.

Thats true but EA would have to be the most blatent offendors.
I don't agree. It only looks like that because they put out more games. If someone was to break it down to new IPs per game release, I would bet EA is average.

Well - at least they are trying a few new games out - even if they aren't new IP's. There's Marvel Nemesis (which is the ONE new game this year), Godfather and Superman. There's also Black, but I thought that was coming this year too, and maybe it doesn't count because it's Criterion instead? That's the only game that isn't based on some existing IP being developed by an EA studio.

They've become an industry giant by sticking with what works. There's no reason for them to risk their money on unproven ideas. Like you guys said - they really should - because they are in a position where they can afford to. It might even earn them some respect from the hardcore crowd and the game industry in general. But I doubt that means as much to EA as a healthy bottom line.

I'm not much of an EA fan, but I understand their place in the industry. Nobody should be looking to EA for creativity. But hey - I'm happy with SSX this gen, and maybe they'll give us a gem or two next gen too. At the very least, they will probably "support" some studios with good ideas like they do with Criterion.

Don't they have two different slogans for EA Sports and then their other studios?

Besides it still doesn't mean it's not ironic. They were the same shithole company when they had that slogan as they are now.

the challenge everything slogan has been replaced by a sound effect :P

because everyone would be doing stupid "LOL ACQUIRE EVERYTHING LOL!" jokes

also, the game that the article mentions is probably marvel nemesis. godfather isnt coming out this year

I wasn't aware that the lack of creativity of EA was still news and not common knowledge at this point.
