It seems they paid a hefty price for the NFL exclusivity deal and according to rumors from some EA insiders, next year's Madden will come out at leat at $65. They've been doing focus group and surveys for weeks.

Oh hell no.

I have been worried about this. I figured EA would pass on the cost to the consumer. But with next gen madden hitting on Xbox 2 I probably won't be able to resist. :(

This is what happens when you don't support the competition, stupid consumers. Enjoy your $75 yearly sports expansion pack (maybe not even that much, since EA no longer has incentive to innovate)

What do the consumers have to do with this? The NFL and the players' union wanted more money through an exclusive license deal. People bought more ESPN NFL this year and it didn't make a difference.

if this is a look into the future of gaming them im out, fuck that.

Yup. I'll be buying less games if the prices go up. 50 bucks is a ton to spend per title right now. If publishers want gaming to go more mainstream prices need to go down and not up.

I don't believe this news, but if it's true, there's no way I'm paying that much for any game.

Retro gaming for me if this is where prices are headed.

Why would that be? Sounds perfectly reasonable to me.
I'm not saying it couldn't happen, but I'm not going to believe it because some guy posted it on a forum. This could be some knee jerk reaction some Sega fan made up because he's pissed about today's news.

If this is true, this and exclusivity news together have to be biggest "fuck you, and it only gets worse from here" to gamers in history. I kinda doubt that it's true though, even for EA.

Right on MrBob. Unfortunately, publishers think they've been giving us a deal for too long now. They're trying to say prices haven't kept pace with inflation. Of course, with luxury items, inflation has nothing to do with it. Raw "what people will pay" for something most certainly is the deciding factor in pricing.

Given how many games are released in a year and how quickly even console games end up in bargain bins now, I rarely even pay $50 for a game. No way in hell I pay $65 or $70 again like the SNES days.

Please produce a link, or I'm going to lock this. No offense, but this thread could set a BAD precedent.

P.S. Don't tell anyone, but I heard the price was going to be, like, $100...AND a testicle!

As I noted in the other post, publishers WANT to raise prices. They're citing a million reasons to do it and only one not to, the fact that $50 has been the price for a long time and they're not sure people will pay more.

Just change the topic header so we can have a theoretical discussion instead of one that looks like it's based on fact.

If this is true, I wonder if the industry has suddenly forget what happened when nintendo tried to sell games for 60-70 bucks.

There is no link because it's not true. Just more venting. He's full of ****.

This wouldn't be some of the EA insiders who are mad at the company over the extended working hours and lack of overtime. :)

Madden at $69.99? Yeah right

The MOST it'll be is $54.99.

Yeah, I never said otherwise. Again, it's possible, but don't you think it's a bit coincidental that we happen to find this out the same day we found out the "other" news?

I'm interested in setting a precedent, since there have been a LOT of threads lately with misleading titles that sound like "facts," but are actually just people talking out of their asses.

Since I don't think this particular thread is gonna be around for long, why don't you start a thread soliciting thoughts on how this deal will affect next year's Madden. There are a LOT of things to consider:

Will the price go up or down because of the cost of the deal and the monopoly on the league property?

Will there be a consumer backlash, or will people buy anything with "NFL" on it, regardless of the backstory?

Will the game have technical improvements, or will EA have an excuse to "slack off?"

Does this deal set any kind of legal precedent, and what actions might the other interested parties take in a courtroom?

What other online features will now be offered?

Does this mean that the featured player on the box cover will suffer an even GREATER curse? Maybe, instead of just having a shitty year, he'll actually DIE now.

He can't reply. EA has already found him and "re-educated" him about his fact finding.

WATCH THE SKIES

I can tell you with 100% certainty that the poster is full of BS. There has been and will be no announcement of this sort. Please lock it and ban the user.

I'm mostly sure they won't. They won't if it's the only football game available.
If it's the only football game available, and there is demand for it, which there is, EA could easily sell it for $60+ Therein lies the problem. EA will continue to gain exclusive deals, thus being able to raise the price of their games, those degrading the videogame industry faster than they are now. EA can rot in hell for I care. Am I the only one who hopes EA goes 3DO? Trip Hawkins, make it happen.

Great, now people on both sides are just pulling numbers out of their asses. Oh well, when in Rome.

The game will cost three live turkeys AND a motorized scooter!

I think you'd have to put a gun to Probst's head to give control of that company back to Hawkins.

Even then I'm not too sure.

OK, enough of this. The original poster can drop me a PM with a link to his source...and if I don't hear from him soon, I might reach for the banstick. In the meantime, I started another thread for wild rumors and speculation based on this news today.

Do NOT start a new thread with a misleading "fact" in the title without a definitive source. You have been warned.
