Earliest gaming memories - what tripped the switch?

Holy shit that's fucking awesome! That game was so freaking cool. I remember learning DOS commands and crap when I was like 5 to be able to play it.

As for consoles, it has to be Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt. So awesome. Super Mario Bros 3 as well. I never cared too much for 2.

The other was this 'space pirates' game that I've never seen since. You had a vector tank (2D top down) and had a bunch of triangle 'fuel tanks' in the middle. bad guys came on and tried to tow away the fuel tanks and you have to stop them. Loved it.

Rip Off.

You're welcome. :)

For me, the first game I remember seeing - probably Breakout or a Space Invaders clone played on an Apple II, but perhaps the one that sucked me in was Zork II - I was barely old enough to read but my dad and I played through it...

I remember my first gaming moment more vividly than I remember where I was during 9/11. I was about 4 years old and at my grandmothers old folks home with their tight walnut trees and she had just gotten a nes. I'd never played any games before and Super Marios Bros 1 was a revelation. It blew my young mind. Me and my bro begged her nonstop to get us a nes until she caved the next day.

And the rest is history!

My earliest gaming memory is seeing my older brother and my cousin playing Combat on some Atari, I begged them to let me play but I was refused, the response was "it's not for kids!" or "you're too young", something along those lines, I even pleaded to my mom for help but it didn't work. Soon after my brother lost interest in video games and I inhereted the thing, and the rest is history.

I was able to revisit the game recently thanks to Atari Anthology on PS2, and you know what? It still rocks for 2-players.

:O
i had this! and had totally forgotten about it! what an awesome game.
i also remember 'thing on a spring' on the c64, along with 'trapdoor', 'xybots' at the arcade (with twisty joysticks) and dig dug/mario bros/balloon fight/CIRCUS on the NES

The first gaming memory I had was when I was four. I went to a relative's home and saw my cousins and uncle play NES. I couldn't describe it but something seemed great about it. I wanted one but after we left, I forgot all about it. A month later, we moved to a new place where I wanted to meet some new kids. One of the kids I knew was playing the same game. The game was Super Mario Bros. I was fascinated with the game. I asked to play. He let me and was wow, in a class of its own. It was fun. We wound up playing two player for hours on end. I also remember my parents looking all over for me. They thought I went missing. I was too young to realize to call my parents and let them know where I was.

It seemed like every day, I'd run up to his place and play more NES. I believe by the end of the first week, we beat the game. I told my parents daily how badly I wanted an NES. They said "No" and if I kept going up there to play video games, they'd threaten to not allow me to go up there. They told me I should play with some other kids instead. I did but always wanted to go back up there. Months had passed by and I almost forgot about the NES. I started up karate and with school, NES just wasn't a concern anymore. Then my dad one day, at random, got me a gift (it has never happened other than this time). So I eagerly opened it to find...

NES bundled with Super Mario Brothers 3.

I was stunned. I couldn't believe it. From that point on, my career of video gaming truly began.

Apple II computer in all its green and black graphics glory!

Some great games like Conan, Lady Tut and Load Runner. There's more but I can't for the life of me remember the names :(

oh.. yeah, pong also.. I was thinking of changeable games..

but yeah, pong (or a clone or whatever it was) that my grandma picked up at a rummage sale for us for like $15.. and that predates the other ones because I was still in my first home at the time which we left when I was five.

Was that Summer Games??

Enduro (1983 on Atari 2600)

I was hooked. I was 5 years old at that time and i was addicted to this game.
The racer in me was born of something lol

Even though I played Pong and other games on the Atari 2600 (junglehunt, Q bert, etc). It wasn't till a certain game that made me a life long gamer, that game is...drumroll please:

Super. Mario. Brothers.

One of those Pong-type dedicated TV systems with paddle controllers, late '70s. I think it was a Telegames brand and had 4 game "variations", though what they could vary I don't recall...

And not long after I'd really get into the shooters, Centipede was an early obsession, as was the relatively rare Super Cobra.

Tempest and Robotron especially though remain potent experiences to this day, and at the time were godly.
