Earmarks of collector's items?

I'm thinking of picking up some games that are desirable now, and will become even more desirable as stores run out of the few copies they are getting. I've already got Advent Rising, Phantom Dust, and Psychonauts which might become desirable eventually. But I'm actually playing those - I'm not keeping them mint, even if I do take far better care of my games than most of the meatheads out there.

So, what should I look for in games that I plan to buy now, keep in the shrink-wrap and sell off when the time is right? (Any system is OK, since I'm not going to play them.) I'm looking at Still Life and Dai Senryaku VII (Xbox) as possible candidates. Any other ideas?

First tip: above average hype + disappointing review scores doesn't equal a collectors item. So few games are going to be truly rare and valuable, that it's really not worth it to be an ebay hawk for rare xbox games. Just buy games you like.

I'm willing to gamble a bit. In the past I've walked by a number of quality games, like Valkyrie Profile, and regretted it when I saw their prices spiral up years later. Or else I opened up the game and played it, and missed out on at least an extra $50. :(

Yeah, your looking for low print, cult status

I remember when a friend of mine back in middle school informed me how rare and special my copies of FF II(IV) and Chrono Trigger were.

As far as future cult hits go, I'd say Baten Kaitos is a pretty safe bet. And of course anything by Nippon Ichi.

Disgaea is already out of my price range... Phantom Brave maybe?

As I've said many times, there are way better things to invest in than hoping a videogame's worth increases by $50 over the next 3 years.

OK, I just bought Still Life and Dai Senryaku for $19.82 each, and Phantom Brave LE for $29.99. Good choices? Bad choices? I can still cancel them.

Phantom Brave, not so much. Disgaea is a better bet from Nippon Ichi.

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne and Digital Devil Saga are safe bets for spiralling prices, too.

Yeah, thing is those games are already $70+, except DDS... you're right, I can't really afford not to spring for it. It's expensive now, but a perfect sealed copy will only increase in value.

Hard to say.. I'd bet that the three will still be worth less than $70 in a few years.

Mark my words: Virtua Quest will be a collector's item someday. Still doesn't mean it's worth buying, but, you know.

I'll be picking it up once it hits $15, just to satisfy my curiosity.

GC Virtua Quest, for sure.

Anal types will pay more later on for original packaging for Nintendo softs also, not sure by how much, though.

Ninja Five-O was hard as hell for me to find on gba... not sure what else.

Its much easier to make money from selling games by going to all your local Gamestops, and buying up the used games that are already rare. Buying new games, and hoping they go up in value isn't rational.

If you know of a place that sells used strategy guides, PS1 RPG guides are a freakin' goldmine. I sold a Legend of Dragoon Strategy Guide that I got for free for $51 on ebay a few days ago.

I've got an Ecco the Dolphin DC strat guide... I should see if I can sell that.

Suikoden 2.

Like the person above me said.

Don't trade it in for $15 credit like I did! :(

Isn't Symphony of the Night (non-GH) worth a lot? Traded that in for $15 credit too.

And now we're getting to the point where people are following the rear end in front of them and not addressing the thread. You're forgiven. THIS TIME. I don't know of any place right now where I could buy either of the above for less than $100.

Think of some pretty good original games this gen that didn't have much hype or sell much. If one of those gets a killer sequel next gen im sure that would send collectors looking to get the first one.

Hmm, Killer 7 might be a cult game that might go up in price.

This game is so hard to play since you never really know anymore.

Actually, I read every post in the topic before posting. Nowhere did you say that these had to be games still buyable at stores. :)

You just asked for games to keep and sell later, my post is still valid (I saw a sealed Suikoden 2 on ebay a month ago). THIS TIME. :)

I doubt Suikoden 2 is going to gain any more value. It seems to have topped out.

I regret getting rid of this a long time ago:

But I'm not gonna make the same mistake with my copy of this:

I think would-be game investors will be disappointed...

Aside from EXTREMELY rare items (such as those pulled from store shelves), most "rare games" seem to go from full price to just below full price, then back to full price or just a bit higher. However, once 5-10 years pass, most games fall back under their original value.

Very few games from the NES or SNES era tend to be worth MORE than their original asking price. Buy any game you want now, but assume that it will be worth no more than its original asking price +/- $10 in the future.

You should have told me that BEFORE I hoarded 450 copies of Busby 3D.

OK, here's my haul, which I will seal away and not touch until it's time to sell them. I was lucky enough to find a Gamespot that still had one sealed copy of Disgaea left, so I'm absolutely delighted about that. I'll monitor how their values go over the next few years for (mostly) fun and (possibly) profit. :D

Disgaea (PS2)
Digital Devil Saga (PS2)
Phantom Brave LE (PS2)
Still Life (Xbox)
Dai Senryaku VII: Modern Military Tactics (Xbox)

Its a little off topic, but i've found great luck in rare games at Video Stores. Because they only get rented so much, then they want to get rid of them and usually sell them pretty cheap. I just got Baten Kaitos for under 20 last week. But I would rather play them untill I can play them no more, rather then horde them and hope to make a few extra bucks on them later. I play my Gitaroo-Man all the time, and wouldn't trade that for anything.

I don't imagine Still Life being very valuable.

I hear Obscure, the horror game by a French developer had a very low printing.

We'll see. I looked at ObsCure as well, both of those games make me think D2 (which hasn't held its value well), I thought Still Life looked more like a game that would eventually be seen as an overlooked classic.

I'm willing to bet Finny the Fish becomes an obscure PS2 game.

Glad I got the game and the preorder stuffed fish bonus... Though I haven't played nearly as much of this as I would like...

Nod. Plush Finny is currently chilling next to Punching Puppet Ghaleon.
