EarthBound is a franchise that many like and many hate. There are many in the past that have expressed great love for this game and others that just dont get it. Demi being one of the people that loves the game and ObiStriker being one that doesnt find the franchise that hot.
What is your take on the franchise, why do you love it or hate it and do you think it deserves a sequel at all?
The quirky dialogue and character designs were what hooked me into the series. The gameplay is standard RPG fare, reminiscent of Dragon Quest, but the gameplay takes a backseat to the story for a reason. Why does Nintendo think we (NA) hate Earthbound so?
Earthbound is my favorite RPG. Love almost everything about it, from the wacky scenarios and dialogue to the non-random enemy encounters. Hopefully Nintendo will finally show the GBA sequel at Spaceworld.
Good: Non-medieval setting. Humor. Wackiness. Autodeaths to enemies that are much weaker than you.
Bad: Gameplay.
It's an interesting game with an interesting premise, and that's enough to keep you playing. But I'd never ever say it was a good game. The mechanics are really not there. It does have some nice features that I wish other RPGs would incorporate such as enemies running away from you when you clearly overpower them. But on the whole, it probably would have been better if they dropped the whole pretext of RPGing and just made it an adventure game.
i think some of the content and humor are what make it so memorable. not really the gameplay. but i have no problem with that. should be on the mother f'ing gba with the other parts here. i don't get why the gc never got a revamping of this. i think it would be a decent sized hit. or would have been.
Earthbound = Genius. No doubt about it. Will buy the GBA version if it ever gets a western release and a new Earthbound is high on my wanted list. Such a pity Nintendo have yet to resurrect this franchise. Had such high hopes when I saw Ness in SSBM.

Love it! One of the few RPGs I can actually enjoy playing. Good and evil the characters rule and I just plain love the games main setting (true modern day). Plus what other game lets you lug around an adorable teddy bear to take damage for you?
Absolutely not overrated. Earthbound is one of the shining examples of humour in video games. It has an excellent story, lovable characters, and a good difficulty as well. It's an instant classic.
You mean next Thursday or Friday? I'll have those magical elvish DVDs in my hands on June 2 or 3!? OMG *breathes in* OMG
Also, srsly, Earthbound is my favorite game. I love everything about it, and the fact that Earthbound 3 has always been floating around in production for years is a damned shame.
Yeah, sorry I would post this in IRC but I'm at school hurray.
Sent them on Thursday at around 2:15 and it only cost $1.40! Like I said once the torrent of video ends I'll send you the repackaged 5 DVD set, double success.

Anyone who has played it to completion will never say this game is overrated. It may seem fairly average in the begining but the end of the game is one of the best ever. You will literally feel different beating this game then any other game you ever have. The first time when playing through and what happens when you don't expect it to happen at all is amazing.
I just hope Mother 3, if it ever shows up, can achieve another unexpected moment like it did.

I think people can feel it's overrated if they like, but the entire game is an incredible experience - not just the ending. The ending is a culmination of the amazing experiences the game has presented, and it perfectly ties everything together. If you didn't enjoy the journey to the end, it's pretty pointless. The games startling awareness of, as Tim Rogers put it, "its status as a game" makes it a hundred times better. I always felt it was sort of a parody of the RPG archetype at the time, and it succeeds even on that level.
I enjoy it because it's a modern styled parody of many RPGs (especially Dragon Quest, in my opinion). And the music in both games totally fucking rock. More games need to have heavy blues/soul/funk influence.

My take? Earthbound for the SNES was fantastic (one of my favorite RPG's ever, even), but the advertisements left many of my 90's era gaming magazines with a funky odor.
You'll note the only reason I mentioned Tim was because Tekuno posted an article by him in this very thread, which despite my better knowledge wasn't actually the worst read. As verbose and filled with conjecture as can be, but still ok.
Mother 2 / Earthbound. Honestly, it's my favorite RPG ever, if not, my most favorite game ever.
It's a game that is very deep, intriguing, artistic, funny and wonderfully strange.
I've beaten it many times and it always amazes me how well-crafted it is. The story line and plot is profound, the settings and experiences are unforgettable
When Master Belch is kicking your butt and all of the sudden Poo appears out of nowhere with the newly acquired StarStorm or when Paula is kidnapped in a blackout, or when you enter behind the bar counter at Fourside and it turns into the friggen weird-as-hell "Moonside" where no means yes and yes means no and the music is so twisted, or when you fight carbon dog and right when you think you've beaten him, diamond dog appears, or the fact that your brain needs to be implanted in robots in order for you to fight Giygas. It's like a friggen weird dream.
., the music is friggen awesome (it has the most songs/themes than any other SNES game ever), the characters, bad guys, items, weapons, powers are very unique and rather imaginative. There is such craftiness in the game...I agree with the posters who said that the game is genius.
The people involved in this game MUST'VE BEEN SNACKING ON PEYOTE. Honestly, if this game was a movie, it would be one of those rare, once in a lifetime high quality pieces of art. Some of the moods in this game to me resemble Miyazake's works like Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, etc.
I would also say, that if Earthbound were a band/group it would be a mixture of Radiohead and Aphex Twin. I guess the strange and awkward moods have something to do with it.
The game is genius. No other game like it. It always always always pwns me; from an artistic and critical standpoint. It's a really deep game, it's just that it's kind of slow at the beginning but then it just explodes into pure blissful madness with much substance.
Trust me, play the game atleast till "Moonside" then, judge the game. don't be turned off by the battle system to soon, be patient and give it a very bold try.
Everything about the game is cool. I remember once I played the EB online with another person. The entire game we beat together in nearly 24 hours of straight play! We had to use a stupid method to get it to work, but it was awesome. We each played for an hour at a time and then switched over. Sort of a communal experience, running through Earthbound with other fans.

I want to know why Nintendo or HAL can't get their act together and release Mother 3. It can't be that hard to make an RPG that is guarenteed at least 300,000 sales in Japan.
