I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
I know my booze, I know my beer....but I know nothing of wine. What is generally considered the price range of a fairly good wine as opposed to a cheap wine? And what are some good, decently priced wines (red wines, specifically)?

That throwing stick stunt of yours has boomeranged on us.
never spend between 15 and 30 generally. In other words, good wines are had at less than 15, while to actually step up in quality you need to spend over 30 at least, inbetweens are ripoffs or possibly particular store markups.

I'll second the 10 dollars and under suggestion. There's some great wines to be had there.

Your best bet will be to ask around and see if there's a GOOD wine store in your area that has knowledgable staff. That way you can ask what goes with what foods, or what kind of taste you prefer.

And as with anything else: try a whole bunch of different wines, to find what you like on your palette.

I like reds mostly, but I had a white wine the other night that would knock your socks off, and it was a fairly reasonable price, no more than $30 if I remember correctly. Sadly, I'm still horrible with names and what not, so I couldn't tell you what it was without having the bottle in front of me.

You know how people say the older wine is, the better it tastes? That's bullshit. If you had a bottle of wine that was 1000 years old, it would have little or no tasted at all. Each type of wine has a period of time in it's lifespan where it tastes best. Some wines have it at like ten years and some have it at fifty.

Merlot/Barbera- Goes with anything and is liked by all
Cabernet sauvignon- Order with steak and my favorite because of that
Zinfandel- Very Popular, order with spaghetti, Berry flavor
Shiraz- Usally very dark

Go with stuff from Australia

for a nice wine at a reasonable price you should be looking at wines $17-23 AUD. That's about $12-17 USD give or take. Australian wines are some of the best in the world. Merlot, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon are the better types of red wine for my tastes... not a big fan of Shiraz, but that all comes down to personal taste. Then you can have blends of red wines. Personally I like a merlot and cab sav blend.
