Eiji Aounuma IGN interview up - some new Zelda tidbits

IGN: Some critics have complained that Wind Waker was too easy. Will Twilight Princess offer more puzzles, new weapons and more complexity?

Eiji Aonuma: In comparison to Ocarina of Time?

IGN: Yes.

Eiji Aonuma: Yeah, as I mentioned in the roundtable yesterday, one of our primary goals with this game is to create a game that exceeds Ocarina of Time on many levels. So in that sense, we do intend to fill the game with a lot of side-quests, mini-games, and puzzles, which will make it more challenging.

IGN: A two-part question. Does the game run in 16x9 widescreen and why is there no voice acting?

Eiji Aonuma: In terms of widescreen mode, I think you'll notice that when the game goes into cinematics, the screen shifts and stretches into what is technically a 16x9 frame. However, if you were to put that up on a widescreen, then when it shifted out of the cinema scenes the top and bottom of the standard 3x4 would then pop off the screen. So it is kind of widescreen mode [laughs], but maybe not the way you were thinking.

As to voice acting, I think what you see on the show floor is pretty much what we've been doing with the series in the past, which is before the text appears you get a very simple voice that pops up and you hear that. In the final version, we do intend to do something slightly different than that. We haven't finalized exactly how we're going to handle the voice in the game, but we are looking into different things.

sounds great.

He already mentioned that it'll have voice acting during parts, in other interviews, but just like it had in the past. Like words or phrases that are important (Navi's "HEY! Listen!" for example). Maybe they're looking to do more.. But I think that was in the EGM interview.

Aonuma seems to hint at a few things in there...

- Zelda turning into an animal as well
- Link being able to turn into an animal that can fly

The little demon-esque thing riding Link in the trailer had the figure of a female, so I assumed that was the Twilight Princess, or whatever (if it doesn't refer to Zelda). Then some interview came out and marked it as an enemy you need to team up with?

Anyhow, this game looks shit hot. End of the gen Gamecube and Playstation 2 is more interested to me than all the new console fuss, currently. Fun times.

My guess, actually, is that the wonky crazy thing riding Link-as-Wolf in the Dark World is Zelda in the Dark World.
Nope. That thing riding Link is called Mindra, and it's confirmed that she's an enemy of Link's, but they basically join forces to tackle a bigger enemy.

Edit: I see I'm a little late on that... can't get distracted while replying.

It seemed as easy as WW in IGN's roundtable videos. I think Nintendo needs to go back to Zelda I's way of doing things, and stop this quarter heart bullshit.

Exactly. I hated the addition of quarter hearts. So weak suace and so worthless. Leave it at half hearts.

About the robed person.....
IGN already said that the robed person was Princess Zelda. I found it inconsistent bc the hooded person has blue eyes and Princess Zelda has brown eyes and looks like the girl that was kidnapped. But princess Zelda was stated by Aunoma to be the one in the artwork and she CLEARLY has brown eyes. Kinda like they said the girl was who was on the stake, but it was the little boy lol

Jesus, just say "no, it's not widescreen." Nintendo is seriously not hip to widescreen at all. F-Zero is the only Nintendo game that I have that's 16:9, and I'm sure that's more thanks to Sega.

I'm going on my LOZ TP media blackout soon. Any club members. Don't spoil the game for yourself.

:)
Yeah, I will be joining you right after e3 is over. The Princess Zelda twist always gets spoiled for me no matter what though. Just before WW came out, I found out that Princess Zelda was Tetra, and now the spoiler in IGN's article. Oh well, I guess there is some curse building here. As much as I love new Zelda info, I really don't want anything spoiled, even if it is some minor detail.

One of the most important things he said was that Zelda: TP will be exceeding OoT. I liked Wind Waker but I didnt feel very challenged like I was in OoT. If TP can offer me that and more, I would be very very satisfied.

The fuckers didnt even label that shit. I was just reading along and BAM. I mean, it's not like I didnt expect it, but anyway. I still dont think its' true, they screwed up one of hte other spoilers in it. Its probably the other way around.

Yeah, those damn bastards. Hey, lets just throw out a spoiler with out any mention at all. It's alright. Complete and utter morons. Oh well, it only serves to increase my anticipation for the game, which is already at insanely high levels. My anger won't subside for quite some time though. It'll take a Thursdayton to help. :lol

They're complete dicks when it comes to spoilers. I was reading the review for one of the Babylon 5 seasons a while ago and they put little spoilers under random screenshots that are supposed to be subtle in that smug pseudo-witty IGN way. Not to mention they always have that bulleted list at the start of each game review telling you exactly how many levels, characters and secrets are in the game. I've stopped reading their site now.

Twilight Princess is the name of a Japanese manga which was inspired by the movie Ladyhawke. That film tells the story of a knight and his lady ruined by a horrible curse. The knight is forever cursed to transform into a wolf with the moonlight, just as the lady is cursed to change into a hawk at the first sign of sunlight.

EDIT: source is some kid who im'ed me. Too lazy to look it up for real!

Way to miss the fucking point. Yes puzzles and side-quests are great, but how about enemies don't only do a quarter heart of damage? Huh? How about that?

IGN fucked that question up. People complained that Wind Waker was too easy not because of the puzzles, but because it was impossible to die. Four fairies + quarter heart damage = you'll never ever die. Unless you get stuck on the final boss and it takes you half an hour to figure out how to defeat him. Then your hearts might be chipped away, slowly, so slowly, and you could die.

I died exactly once in Wind Waker, for that reason (the Puppet portion). Same with Minish Cap. I think I died three times in OoT (towards the beginning of the game). In LttP I died several dozen times. In the NES games, I died hundreds of times. Granted, part of that is just me gradually getting better at games, but the Zelda series has become absurdly easy, action-wise. Not only do you never die, there's almost never even a chance you'll die. There's no risk and little tension in the battles.

Battles would be far more interesting if you actually had a reason to avoid being hit. Quarter heart damage is retarded.

The least they could do is add difficulty levels. All they'd even have to change would be the amount of damage enemies do.

Exactly. I mean, I didn't die much in Ocarina, but that was more through playing carefully, planning fairies properly and doing enough sidequests as I went to get extra heart containers. Teh problem with Wind Waker is that it's so insanely difficult to actually die, there was no incentive to go and get extra heart containers, because you never really needed them. Remember how in A link tot he past, and OoT, getting an extra bottle was one of the best things, because you could carry an extra potion or fairy (basically an extra complete set of hearts)? It was awesome to get, and felt like a real bonus....in Wind Waker, it was ho hum to get another one. More challenging puzzles, and side quests, fine, but I hope the rewards actually feel like rewards.

IGN: Is the storyline of Twilight Princess based on the movie Ladyhawke?

Eiji Aonuma: I've heard about the movie Ladyhawke, but I've never actually seen it. People have asked me about it, but obviously I don't have any inspiration from it since I've never seen it. That being said, this time around the reason that Link transforms into a wolf is completely different from what I understand is going on in that movie.

The Zelda franchise does suffer from server game balance, and I really hope someone delivers this message to Aonuma ASA-motherfucking-P.

Just watching that boss battle vid in the demo, it would take 20 consecutive hits on Link for a Game Over. I don't even think the boss landed more than 3 in the presentation. This is ignoring the fact that the arena is lined with heart-giving pots to immediately negate the absolute worst that could be done.

E3 demos are one thing, give the press and attendees a virtual tour through the assets, environments, and mechanics; but it's irresponsible and insulting if the final ships in the same state.

You HardCore Gamers really think everyone is as skilled as you?
I really don't want my Zelda to become a fuck-hard Ninja Gaiden.
I know some of you get a stiffy for hard games but give me a break.

I would like to enjoy this Zelda I am sure it will be challenging enough
I never play a Zelda carefully, I welcome Link's death animation.
I explore everything and take the risk.

JUST DO THIS: if you ARE so hardcore then hit the reset button everytime you lose one heart
that way you will challenge yourself to never fuck up again.

Why should I have to suffer cause you're so damn HardCore :lol

No one's asking for that much difficulty. Did you play Wind Waker? It was far easier than the previous games in the series. People want that rectified, not some sudden addition of ridiculous difficulty. Unless OOT was too hard for you, I don't think you're in disagreement with the people in this thread.

It's not about us desiring frustration; I at least would just like to see classic encruchments like potions, fairies, and heart containers feel the least bit meritous or utilized.

I should be pleased to uncover a fairy off a corpse, not overwhelmed by them. I would like to occasionally hear the "low on health" soundbyte, I want to fear those moments I muck around dangerous zones without the cushion of a potion bottle.

I really just want the game to be balanced.

Sure I died in OOT so as long as people here are not asking for Ninja Gaiden hard then I'm okay with it.

It has been said over and over again that this will be better than OOT on every level.
So this has to be something they rectified. Many people hated WW's style (I LOVED IT)
Nintendo heard you and gave you a Darker OOT so trust that they will handle this with care.

That said, the big fat Pig in the first island in WW did kick my ass I was messing with him too much and he owned me. I got to go play some WW :D

Well atleast Aounuma is aware that IGN complained at the challenging part. I am sure Aounuma intends to look into that more.

That said, don't judge the games challenge on the E3 demos, since they at the begining of the game, and they are suppose to just show it of. Not going on a deathatlon.

Maybe that would fix em... Die and you have to start over from the Game's Start Screen.

It's not about dieing, it's about tension. I don't know, have you guys not played a 2D zelda game? The TENSION of a dungeon that's kicking your ass while solving puzzles used to be a hallmark of the series. It's never been ballbustingly difficult either, it was simply balanced. Nintendo's defanging of the franchise could be so easily rectified that we shouldn't even be discussing it. It's just common sense.
