It's been said that if Eminem was born in another era he could have been Shakespeare.
He's on everyone's top ten list. In the running for Greatest of All Time. Eminem has a sense of rhythm and mastery of the English language unmatched by any rapper past and present. He is the best selling artist of the 2000s decade. Even among the most legendary rappers, Eminem stands out, as he's able to string ideas into words in ways nobody else can even think of. He's arguably the musical version Einstein or Newton, after all...geniuses are just humans who are able to make the mental connections that us mortals cannot.
Also, he won an Oscar.
What's your favorite verse by Eminem? I'll start...elfinke said:His wordsmithing and ability to make rhymes where none should exist without the combination of the beat or the flow of the song are truly on a level very few can say to have been on. I fucking love the English language, and his (occasionaly perverse or extension) use of it never ceases to amaze me, regardless of the topic he is banging on about.
As others have said, sometimes it's not until I've listened to the song a few times before a particular verse clicks, but when it does it's a pure moment.
No Love was the song from Recovery where you were like, he's back!! The whole song is only two verses and the chorus only sung twice (in the middle and at the end). Eminem's verse starts at 2:42 and is relentless til it ends a minute and a half later.
1) Eminem - No Love (ft Lil Wayne) - skip to 2:31
I'm alive again
More alive than I have been in my whole entire life
I can see these people's ears perk up as I begin
To spaz with the pen, I'm a little bit sicker than most
Shit's finna get thick again
They say the competition is stiff
But I get a hard dick from this shit, now stick it in
I ain't never giving in again
Caution to the wind, complete freedom
Look at these rappers, how I treat them
So why the fuck would I join them when I beat them?
They call me a freak cuz
I like to spit on these pussies 'fore I eat them
Man get these whack cocksuckers off stage
Where the fuck is Kanye when you need him?
Snatch the mic from him, bitch I'mma let you finish in a minute
Yeah the rap is tight
But I'm bout to spit the greatest verse of all time
So you might want to go back to the lab tonight and um
Scribble out them rhymes you were going to spit
And start over from scratch and write new ones
But I'm afraid that it ain't gonna make no difference
When I rip this stage and tear it in half tonight
It's an adrenaline rush to feel the bass thump
In the place all the way to the parking lot, fellow
Set fire to the mic and ignite the crowd
You can see the sparks from hot metal
Cold-hearted from the day I Bogarted the game
My soul started to rot, fellow
When I'm not even in my harshest
You can still get roasted cuz Marsh is not mellow
Til I'm toppling from the top I'm not going to stop
I'm standing on my Monopoly board
That means I'm on top of my game and it don't stop
Til my hip don't hop anymore
When you so good that you can't say it
Because it ain't even cool for you to sound cocky anymore
People just get sick cause you spit
These fools can't drool or dribble a drop anymore
And you can never break my stride
You'll never slow the momentum at any moment
I'm 'bout to blow, you'll never take my pride
Killing the flow, slow venom and the opponent
Is getting no mercy, mark my words
Ain't letting up, relentless
I smell blood, I don't give a fuck: keep giving them hell
Where was you when I fell and needed help up?
You get no love
Em has this habit of basically destroying every other rapper on songs he's featured on, making them look like kindergarteners. For the host artist, it's pretty much guaranteed that he will be outshined by Eminem, but on the other hand chances are it'll probably be a really good song. Some examples:
2) Drake - Forever (ft Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Eminem) - skip to 4:46
It's important to listen to the entire song so you can see just how much Eminem outclasses his peers (all of whom are highly regarded, so this is saying a lot), that it's almost embarrassing. Every time I hear this verse, I have to yell the bolded part with him, it's just that awesome.
There they go, packing stadiums as Shady spits his flow
Nuts they go, Macadamia, they go so ballistic, whoa
He can make them look like bozos, he's wondering if he should spit this slow -
Fuck no! Go for broke, this cup just runneth over, oh no
He ain't had him a buzz like this since the last time that he overdosed
They been waiting patiently for Pinocchio to poke his nose
Back into the game and they know, rap will never be same as before
Bashing in the brains of these hoes and establishing the name as he goes
The passion in the flame is ignited, you can't put it out once we light it
This shit is exactly what the fuck that I'm talking about when we riot
You dealing with a few true villains who stand inside of a booth, truth spilling
And spit true feelings until our tooth fillings come flyin' up outta of our mouths
Now rewind it
Pay back mothafucka for the way that you doubted me, how's it taste?
When I slap the taste outta your mouth with the bass so loud that it shakes the place
I'm Hannibal Lecter, so just in case you're thinking of saving face
You ain't gonna have no face to save by the time I'm through with this place, so Drake
3) Jay-Z - Renegade (ft Eminem) - skip to 1:20
This song is the subject of Nas's line "...and Eminem murdered you on your own shit" from his infamous Jay-Z diss, Ether. He delivers a specific point coherently across two amazingly well crafted verses. It's a poem that works even in the absence of any music.
Since I'm in a position to talk to these kids and they listen
I ain't no politician, but I'll kick it with 'em a minute
Cause, see, they call me a menace, and if the shoe fits I'll wear it
But if it don't, then y'all'll swallow the truth, grin and bear it
Now who's the king of these rude, ludicrous, lucrative lyrics?
Who could inherit the title, put the youth in hysterics?
Using his music to steer it, sharing his views and his merits
But there's a huge interference: they're saying you shouldn't hear it
Maybe it's hatred I spew, maybe it's food for the spirit
Maybe it's beautiful music I made for you to just cherish
But I'm debated, disputed, hated and viewed in America
As a motherfuckin' drug addict - like you didn't experiment?
Now now, that's when you start to stare at who's in the mirror
And see yourself as a kid again, and you get embarrassed
And I got nothing to do but make you look stupid as parents
You fuckin' do-gooders, too bad you couldn't do good at marriage
And do you have any clue what I had to do to get here? I don't
Think you do, so stay tuned and keep your ears glued to the stereo
Cause here we go, he's {*Jigga j-Jigga*}
And I'm the sinister Mr. Kiss-My-Ass, it's just the...
...
See I'm a poet to some, a regular modern-day Shakespeare
Jesus Christ, the King of these Latter-Day Saints here
To shatter the picture in which of that as they paint me as
A monger of hate, a Satan, a scatter-brained atheist
But that ain't the case, see it's a matter of taste
We as a people decide if Shady's as bad as they say he is
Or is he the ladder, a gateway to escape
Media scapegoat; who they can be mad at today?
See it's easy as cake, simple as whistlin' Dixie
While I'm waving the pistol at sixty Christians against me
Go to war with the Mormons, take a bath with the Catholics
In holy water - no wonder they try to hold me under longer
I'm a motherfuckin spiteful, delightful eyeful
The new Ice Cube - motherfuckers hate to like you
What did I do? I'm just a kid from the gutter
Making this butter off these bloodsuckers
Cuz I'm a muthafuckin'...
4) T.I. - That's All She Wrote (ft Eminem) - skip to 3:24
Listen closely and notice the following highlighted part, where he raps so fast (which is what he's rapping about) that you almost can't catch what he's saying (which he also notes). And the genius thing is he accelerates to and then decellerates from exactly twice the speed of the tempo (double time) that it works flawlessly with the beat.
According to the math on RapGenius, Em is saying he can spit 120 insults in the time it takes other rappers to spit 2.
Yeah, I guess life is a bitch, ain't it TIP
And each one thinks they the shit
Shirt off my back, I wouldn’t give you the dirt off my handkerchief
I’m giving these hoes a dose of their own medicine
Let em get a good taste of it
I’m sure you got that relationship memo by now
But in case you didn't
I'mma stick this whole pad full of sticky notes to your forehead and staple it
Life is too short and I got no time to sit around just wasting it
So I pace this shit a little bit quicker
That clock I'm racing it, double timing it
But I still spit triple the amount of insults in a tenth of the time
It may take you pricks to catch on
While you strong, I'm like like Stretch Armstrong
Man I still say K-Mart like there's an apostrophe “S” on it dog
And they say McDonald's isn’t a restaurant, well I guess I’m wrong
But if you gon' tell me that the A&W ain't the spot for the best hot dogs
You can get the “F” on dawg
5) Eminem & Royce da 5'9" - I'm On Everything - skip to 3:04
Royce and Em have a really creative series of exchanges in this track.
[Verse 4: Eminem]
Then I enter the front of the K-Mart shopping center with a coupon book
And a hundred and ten bucks and a bunch of change
And wife beater with a mustard stain
I’ll crush your brain like I’m crushing pills
What the fuck’s the mothafuckin' deal?
This shit’s making me feel like
I’m tryna do a mothafuckin' cartwheel up a hill
[Verse 5:Royce]
How many bars, how many tabs? A-C-I-D? Y-E-S
Cause I’m sniffin' M Y E X (F-U-C-Ked up, and it’s obvious)
Smoke and Henny in my chest (I’m B-A-N-A-N-A-S)
I’m a C-O-C-O-N-U-T
[Verse 6: Eminem]
Put this CD in and you’ll see, the sequel to Scary Movie
Bad is too evil, a roofie to Roethlisberger
(You are gonna wind up six feet deep under
That shit's creek so I hope that you want preservers)
You could put a turd on the plate
Silverware on the tablecloth to serve us
You don’t bring shit to the table
I mean your grill like a Seville when a mark gets murdered
You pushing the envelope and I’m shovin’ that whole post office further
Right off the surface, to the serpents in the darkest and the farthest corner
more
6) 50 Cent - My Life (ft Eminem, Adam Levine) - skip to 1:24
While you were sipping your own Kool-Aid getting your buzz heavy
I was in the fucking sheds sharpening my machete
Sipping on some of that revenge juice, getting my taste buds ready
To whoop down this spaghetti, or should I say this spaghett-even?
I think you fucking meatballs keep on just forgetting
Thought he was finished, motherfucker, it's only the beginning
He's bugging again, he's straight thugging, fuck who he's offending
He'll rip your vocal chords out and have them bitches plugged in me
Motherfucking wall with 3000 volts of electricity
Now take the other and dump them then pluck him, motherfuckers in each
One of your eyesockets cause I thought you might finally fucking see
That'll teach you to go voicing your cocksucking opinion to me
I done put my blood, my sweat and my tears in this shit
Fuck letting up, you’re gonna end up regretting you ever betted against me
Feels like I'mma snap any minute, yeah
It's happening again, I'm thinking about the same
Mother fuck everybody that's up in this bitch, but 50
Cause this is all I know, this is why so hard I go
I swear to God I put my heart and soul into this more than anybody knows
I'm trapped, so all I do is rap, but everytime I rap I'm more trapped
And I rap myself right into this bubble, oh I guess it's bubble wrap
This is like a vicious cycle, my life's in a crisis
Christ, how was I supposed to know shit would turn up like it did?
Feels like I'm going psycho again and I might just blow my lid
Shit, I almost wish that I would have never made Recovery, kid
Cause I'm running in circles with
7) The Game - We Ain't (ft Eminem) - skip to 1:50
The multis are insane in this one! He somehow rhymes "Only Dre can" and "mistakes I'm making" through the entire verse.
Only Dre can, judge me for the mistakes I'm making
If I'm faking, I'm Clay Aiken
You ain't 50 and you ain't Game, you lame, you're tame
Your mind's lost, you are not ready to make that flame switch
You will end up in the same situation, same shit
Different day, just with different gangstas in your face
Which- way do you wanna face when your brains hit pavement
Think of what you'll say to Pastor Mase and save it
For the day that they got them affidavits waiving in my face
Looking for answers, rap sensation Eminem battles to ward off accusations
That he had somebody blasted
The Mask of Jason was found at the scene of the task with masking tape
And the victim's penis up his ass, a basket case
And they ask him to clean up his act, you bastards wasting too much time
Me no kiss ass, and if that's the case, then we ain't going
8) Nicki Minaj - Roman's Revenge (ft Eminem) - skip to 1:22 - lyrics
9) B.O.B - Airplanes Pt 2 (ft Eminem, Hayley Williams) - skip to 3:06 - lyrics - Notice the change in tone of the whole verse at "Pretend he even had a friend to say was his friend"
This is his best freestyle ever in my opinion. He MURDERS it:
10) Eminem - Dispicable - lyrics
Eminem is also the king of multisyllabic rhymes, hidden rhymes, and he goes on sprints with multiple parts of several lines rhyming in different places. Here are some examples:
11) Eminem - The Way I Am
I sit back with this pack of Zig-Zags and this bag
Of this weed it gives me the shit needed to be
The most meanest MC on this, on this Earth
And since birth I've been cursed with this curse to just curse
And just blurt this berserk and bizarre shit that works
And it sells and it helps in itself to relieve
All this tension dispensing these sentences
Getting this stress that's been eating me recently off of this chest
And I rest again peacefully
But at least have the decency in you
To leave me alone, when you freaks see me out
In the streets when I'm eating or feeding my daughter
To not come and speak to me
I don't know you and no
I don't owe you a motherfucking thing
I'm not Mr. N*Sync, I'm not what your friends think
I'm not Mr. Friendly, I can be a prick
If you tempt me my tank is on empty
No patience is in me and if you offend me
I'm lifting you 10 feet in the air
I don't care who is there and who saw me just jaw you
Go call you a lawyer, file you a lawsuit
I'll smile in the courtroom and buy you a wardrobe
I'm tired of all you
I don't mean to be mean but that's all I can be is just me
more
12) Eminem - Lose Yourself
His palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy
There's vomit on his sweater already: mom's spaghetti
He's nervous, but on the surface he looks calm and ready
To drop bombs, but he keeps on forgetting
What he wrote down, the whole crowd goes so loud
He opens his mouth but the words won't come out
He's choking, how? Everybody's joking now
The clock's run out, time's up, over - blaow!
Snap back to reality, oh! - there goes gravity
Oh - there goes Rabbit, he choked
He's so mad, but he won't
Give up that easy nope, he won't have it
He knows, his whole back's to these ropes
It don't matter, he's dope
He knows that, but he's broke
He's so stagnant, he knows
When he goes back to this mobile home, that's when it's
Back to the lab again, yo, this whole rhapsody
He better go capture this moment and hope it don't pass him
more
13) Eminem - Till I Collapse
'Til I collapse I'm spilling these raps long as you feel them
Til the day that I drop you'll never say that I'm not killing them
Cause when I am not, then I'mma stop penning them
And I am not hip-hop and I'm just not Eminem
Subliminal thoughts, when I'mma stop sending them?
Women are caught in webs, spin 'em and hock venom
Adrenalin shots of penicillin could not get the illin to stop
Amoxicillin's just not real enough
The criminal cop-killing hip-hop villain
A minimal swap to cop millions of Pac listeners
You're coming with me, feel it or not you're gonna fear it
Like I showed you the spirit of God lives in us
You hear it a lot, lyrics to shock
Is it a miracle or am I just product of pop fizzin' up?
For shizzle my wizzle, this is the plot, listen up
You bizzles forgot, Slizzle does not give a fuck!
14) 50 Cent - Patiently Waiting (ft Eminem) - skip to 1:32
They think they crazy but they ain't crazy, let's face it
Shit, basically they just playing sick
They ain't shit, they ain't saying shit, spray em 50
A to the K get in the way I'll bring Dre and them with me
And turn this day into fucking mayhem, you staying with me?
Don't let me lose you, I'm not trying to confuse you
When I let loose with this Uzi and just shoot through your Isuzu
You get the message? Am I getting through to you?
You know what's coming, you motherfuckers don't even know, do you?
Take some Big and some Pac and you mix em up in a pot
Sprinkle a little Big L on top, what the fuck do you got?
You got the realest and illest killers tied up in a knot
The juggernauts of this rap shit, like it or not
It's like a fight to the top just to see who'd die for the spot
You put ya life in this, nothing like surviving a shot
Y'all know what time it is, soon as 50 signs on this dot
Shit what you know about death threats, cause I get a lot
Shady Records was eighty seconds away from the towers
Them cowards fucked with the wrong building, they meant to hit ours
Better evacuate all children, it's nuclear showers
There's nothing spookier
You now about to witness the power of fucking 50
Here's 25 To Life off his latest album, Recovery. There's a mind blowing plot twist at the end.
15) Eminem - 25 To Life - lyrics
Here's Rabbit Run, from the 8 Mile soundtrack. The entire song is one verse, no chorus.
16) Eminem - Rabbit Run - lyrics
