Emio: The Smiling Man Detective Club Officially Announced

I've been interested in the Famicom Detective Club series, but goodness...the games have not gone on sale once in over three years. Since I have a perpetual backlog and therefore am typically not dying to play anything, I usually let sales drive my purchases.

I love a good murder mystery VN though.

The generic modern anime look is the only thing that turns me off

Quite ironic to say in a year that they're constantly getting a lot of shit for not having AAA blockbusters.
This year is their most interesting lineup in a while! Astro, Stellar, and Ronin are all great, and I wish/hope Sony would keep that going

Bit disappointed its not a new IP, however:
  • Go back a couple of months and Nintendo's H2 2024 was nothing, following a H1 that was largely remakes. Now their H2 has 5 games and 4 of them are new. And they might still have a December game
  • Sakamoto got to do two remakes to test the waters, then follow up with a new entry. I hope the same thing happens with Advance Wars.

The other two FDC games are good. They tell pretty complex tales and have just a splash of supernatural/horror elements to keep the intrigue up (MAGES who handled the art and development also did all the Corpse Party games so there's some grisliness). Keep in mind the gameplay is of 35+ year old Famicom games so there's some dry spells, but I quite enjoyed them altogether.

Aren't these just visual novels?
Yes, this is from the remake:

Yosio Sakamoto is behind Emio?? Interesting,it never looked like a traditional horror game, searching for a serial killer is more visual novel fit

For me this is a lot better than Bloober i will check it out, i just hope it 'innovates' the genre in some way, i want to see some crazy Anime cutscenes and twists
He was also involved in the remake. The Japanese announcement had him directly announce it.

IIRC Famicom Detective Club is always about urban legend

MAGES is famous for visual novels. They made the science adventure series (Chaos;Head, Steins;Gate, Robotics;Notes)

Huh, I just realized that it's gonna be released next month and they didn't put it in last month Direct. Pretty smart. That Direct was already packed with Mario & Luigi Brothership, Zelda Echoes of Wisdom, and Metroid Prime 4.

The people who didn't believe that leaker that said this was a detective club game.
Are not smiling.

Yeah, It's going to be a while until I'll pick the remakes up since apparently they never go on a fucking sale. Oh and no physical release outside of Japan.

Say what you want, but this is the most solid year I can remember Nintendo having before launching a new console.

Remakes and all, they're still releasing over 10 games for Switch.

I think he has a greenlight to just do anything he wants, but has never had his own set team or division. He's made some of the strangest games ever, including Tomodachi Collection, Miitomo, Rhythm Heaven. Does a ton of producing / directing of off-site teams not at Nintendo, like Tecmo and Mercury Steam.
I don't think that's strictly true. He's one of the two Producers for EPD7. Alhough it looks like that department had switched to only doing external collaborations, rather than also doing their own internal creations.

I think they made the right marketing choice.

Not as good as 2022 or 2023, but still decent with 6 new games, 3 remakes and two remasters/ports.

For sure. Because they are simultaneously developing for Switch 2 this year much more than during the previous years. But compared to the drought at the end of the life of the GameCube, Wii, or Wii U, this is a drastic improvement.

Doesn't hurt that Switch is selling more than all three of those combined, either! So it makes sense to support it better.

Damn, somehow I didn't manage to find the correct SKU on Amazon JP so for thanks for the link! 🙏 And yeah, Amazon JP ships to my location (bought several VNs through them recently).

The only other thing I wish for is for Nintendo to do a PEGI physical release of the two Famicom Detective Club remakes and then we're golden.
