Engadget: Sony UK article leads to OS X speculation

"So way back in June, Kutaragi was spouting some hyperbole about the Cell being the one processor to rule them all, with the ability to power a PS3 console running potentially multiple operating systems. He name-dropped Linux and Mac OS X as possibilities for the default operating system in the PS3. A recent article on the Sony website confirms that they’re still looking into the possibility of the PS3 running Linux or Tiger — or at least that they’ve got some really wishful thinking going on that Stevie J is gonna license OS X for use in the box. So what do you think — pure PR hype? Public plea? Or some sort of tease on an actual, potential partnership?"

An interesting bit of convergence if this is true. A Sony game machine somehow competing with their own VAIO line and for less than their least expensive Windows desktop? What are we missing?

While there is a near 0% chance of the PS3 running OSX, if it happens it would be a coup beyond compare. Many people will die of heart attacks, uber trolls and fanboy attacks would destroy the Internet, and if you think you've seen Steve Ballmer folks go 'wild' - he would just explode on stage.

Didn't Jobs diss Cell?

For dedicated Macintoshes, yes. But in the off-chance of a less expensive convergence device (at worst, the PS3 may cost the same as a Mac mini or something) that wouldn't carry the Apple name, that may or may not be a different story. And Steve Jobs allegedly hinted at future work between the two companies, one of those 'who knows?' statements that got the Mac community in a tizzy a while ago.

Won't happen. Cell is not good a CPU for things other than gaming. That's what Jobs said I think.

You're absolutly right, I was just complaining today about how slow Word runs... err... Apple's had a bias towards media editing on their platform, a task which is well suited for Cell. I think the choice had as much to do with cost as anything else, both in terms of software and hardware.

weird, i have word, two explorers, 5 mainframe sessions, 2 exceed boxes, Visio, Outlook, our internal messaging system open and it's all smooth as silk, yet i'm not using a Cell processor ! ;)

Why would Apple want to align with anyone - especially sony and MS? I'm sure they are going to be after a larger chunk of the living room pie, so i'd have expected them to come up with their own product.

I-home? I-God? i dunno, something like that - with the added benefit of looking stylish?
