Epson plans GT4 compatible printers

Epson plans to release a pair of new photo printers designed to work with Gran Turismo 4 in Japan this winter, Sony announced today. Players can use each of the two models to print out images posed and rendered in the game's photography mode and save them for posterity.

The first model, the PX-G820, will be designed for more casual users. With a suggested price of around 20,000 yen (about $180), it will support up for 5,760 by 1,440 dpi of resolution and employ a six-color printing process.

Die-hard virtual photographers can choose the PX-G820, priced at or slightly above 40,000 yen ($360), which outputs the same maximum resolution as the G820, but uses an eight-color printing process for more vibrant colors (nearly equivalent to those of positive film) and longer-lived prints.

Both printers connect to the PlayStation 2 through its USB ports, and are automatically recognized by the game, which has drivers built-in. At E3, when Sony debuted the GT4 photo mode, Polyphony Digital director Kazunori Yamauchi said the developer was working to support as many photo printers as possible with the game, but it's not clear how many other models are guaranteed to work.

GT4's photo mode lets players pose a car in one of several backgrounds, tweak the framing, aspect ratio, exposure, and filtering of their image, and then render the resulting image at a very high resolution, with extra lighting and environment mapping effects applied to the car. Photos can be saved for posterity on a memory card or printed out with a compatible printer.

The game is scheduled to arrive in Japan on December 3 and in North America 10 days later, so we'll watch out for more updates on compatible hardware between now and then.

"You'd have to throw some virtual ass into photo mode for these things to approach being worthwhile."

Finally bought a new PSP, but then pushed the demon onto someone else. Jesus.
One thing I've noticed...

The new PSTwo makes the OG one look awful and a hell of a lot bigger.

And why are they using composite... They make projectors and that was the best they could do...

Odd.

They are photo printers that just happen to also be compatible with GT4, not specifically designed peripherals like a wheel. I doubt anyone will buy a photo printer just for GT4, but if you are going to buy one anyway, GT4 compatibility is a plus.
