Probably because the character's flaws were supposed to be pretty explicit. And still likeable, I thought.Also Carrey's character wasn't that likeable - but that's a fault of all of Kaufman's scripts.

It seemed to me like she was just intrigued by him initially and they came to be really comfortable around each other.Fair enough, but I just thought Carrey's character did nothing to deserve Winslet's character. She sort of latched on to him, without him doing anything worthy.

but i liked kaufman's other movies more; adaptation is one of my favorite movies ever
