Hey all,

Saw an interesting British TV documentary recently about the phenomena of ethnic plastic surgery, ie how people try to change their physical appearance by surgery in order to better conform to a white/western standard of beauty.

In the documentary there were some examples:

-A black, Caribbean woman, somewhat busty and round, who wanted to change her breasts so they would look more like the breasts of white women (her ideal was Victoria Beckham).

-A Chinese woman who wanted to enlarge her breasts so they looked more like the breasts of her white neighbors in the little English town where she lived.

-A south East Asian guy who wanted to be taller so he could became more like his white neighbors. He thought that could make his social life better and also further his career.

Also there were mentioning about men from the middle east who removed body hair to more look like northern European men, people that operated lips, eyes and noses to look European, or who tried to bleach their skin. (Sammy Sosa)

A historian that were interviewed talked about how attitudes where the white Europeans are seen as the norm, have their roots in racism and imperialism. He also mentioned that these attitudes have spread, being exported to other parts of the world.

What are your thoughts on this?

It's disgusting that the there's no repercussions for airing this blatant racism, taking individuals choices and clear personal issues and using them to form a narrative that demonises european people and their cultures.

Never mind that there are plenty of examples of white people doing the same thing to look like other races, or numerous historical examples of the same behavior whenever there's a commonly accepted beauty standard and those that don't meet it, but can pay to do so, will change themselves to fit that standard, going back to at least the ancient Egyptians, and not always due to conquest, as the Mongols adopting chinese standards after they conquered them shows.

It just sickens me how much the media and society has regressed when it comes to accepting racsim in the last couple of decades.

Women prefer taller men, nothing "white" about it.

Reducing breast size however... uh, that sounds unusual. (and I've never heard of white women having smaller breasts than women of other races).

Men, regardless of their race, seem to be more interested in white women, so, naturally, white women could have an edge in better reflecting certain traits that we are programmed to find attractive. Vs Asians it's clearly bigger breasts and wider hips.


That being said, there are plenty of white women with narrow hips and wide shoulders, which ain't really something that should be particularly attractive... except on certain places, like GAF, where even that big nose girl from TLOU2 is "hot" and Gal Gadot is a beauty of the century...

Seriously, every person with facial plastic surgery has that same fucked up look. They get the nose done, which somehow always fucks up the upper lip, and then pump Botox in their cheeks and get their lips injected. Automatically you look fucking stupid. I cannot understand how Any girl can see these widespread results and think that's a.good look.

Yeah, I'm no fan of this sort of thing. A Korean lady friend of mine got a nose job in order to appear more "mainstream", and I thought it was such a shame. She was perfectly attractive, and this surgery didn't enhance her appearance at all imo.

But I suppose the root of things is that we all need to feel a sense of belonging and acceptance. I think we'd be better served by accepting ourselves - however we may appear - as a first step though.

There have been procedures to make people taller for a long time.

Makes sense. In some countries with a predominantly darker population, their movie stars still tend to have lighter skin and more western features. The western standard of beauty seems to be the defacto standard for many, and I can definitely see how imperialism and racism play a huge role in this.

Anecdotally, I grew up in a small town in KY and I have ethnic features for which I was mocked for years. Still self-conscious about my appearance now

Just personal preference, it’s like finding out that cool new Ferrari you bought is just a kit car someone built in his garage, looks great from from a distance but once you get your hands on it realize it’s a cheap knockoff.

You are taught that having dark skin is undesirable, either directly in your family or through the leaders/celebs in your part of the world.

In the US, this can be seen in the fact black women (and some black men) straighten their hair to look more acceptable to white employers or friends. If hair straightening isn't possible or comfortable (it wasn't back then... Sometimes still isn't now), then you wear a wig. It's something that still goes on.

There was a thread here a while back (maybe late last year) about a law saying employers can't discriminate against black hairstyles like cornrows, afropuffs, locs (there's a reason I choose not to say "dreadlocks"), afros, etc. And there have been many who told people that if they straightened their hair, they'd have been hired. So, yes, that's a thing.

All to be seen as more employable... And that thinking has infected even black employers.

Or maybe this is just anti-White propaganda aimed at population that is neither imperialist or racist in an attempt to demoralize and stoke division.

All women from all groups can suffer from breast envy. I do like the attempt though to shame White women for something they have no control over, and (I'm guessing) the implied problematic nature of White men finding qualities of women from their own race attractive. No agenda here!

If she is in a small town she probably was having trouble finding a white guy to date and thought this might help. The amount of non-White women who simultaneously complain about White society / racism / imperialism / colonialism and want to date / date White men is too many to count. At some point it starts to feel like a game to snag a guy than anything else.

This guy is actually right about height, but this is true for every race.

However, trying to imply that Whites being taller is a problem is (again) trying to shame Whites for things they can't control. I would not be surprised if it was implied that White women finding these and other characteristics attractive as bad. As finding your own race attractive as bad. Demoralization.

Honestly, I don't understand how anyone can ever have a positive view of themselves if their entire self-image is predicated on how others view them. Maybe this East Asian guy should stop worrying about what White people think and start wondering why he isn't comfortable being East Asian. If no one is willing to set an example, there will be no examples to follow. Be the change you want to see.

Slavery is still practiced today in non-White countries. The most racist countries on this planet are all non-White, China for example . Europeans have bent over backwards more so than any other race, at any time in history, to be more accommodating to those outside of theirs. This "historian" sounds like a person trying to demoralize a group of well meaning, tolerant people with lies and propaganda.

What are your thoughts on this?

My thoughts are:

1) Stop watching British TV and encourage others to do the same if they are intent on airing this drivel.
2) Womp womp. White people are not a resource non-Whites are owed, whether that be attention, time, or money. We are not a personal psychologist to help work through insecurities. Especially, when those insecurities come from Whites welcoming others into their countries and them getting booty-blasted that they are in fact full of White people being White.

Stop worrying about what White people think. Do your own thing. Be productive, inspiring, helpful and hopeful and people will come around, and if they don't you still improved your community, country, people and yourself and that is all that matters. The irony of junk like this documentary is that it still places Whites at the center of the universe, implying that the only happiness to be found is through acceptance from White people and White culture. It is inherently self-defeating because it encourages the relinquishment of agency over how one feels, leading one to give up more agency because "They just don't like me enough," and on, and on, and on it goes.
