Every time someone refers to Native Americans as Indians, god kills a kitten...

It's fucking annoying being a real indian and having to deal with people STILL calling Native Americans as Indians. It pisses me off to no end, if they're Indians then WTF am I? A South Asian? sure, whatever. But I'm Indian, I'M FUCKING INDIAN DAMNIT!!!

Also, everytime I say I'm indian on the web I gotta put a disclaimer (an indian form india). Mucho annoying.

*travels back in time and shoots Columbus*

I also realize this is a pointless thread, so I'll open up the floor...anyone else with really odd pet peeves, speak up.

I love a lot about my culture, but cricket sucks balls. I make fun of it to my brown friends all the time, thankfully they hate it too...else, I'd get a public lyncing in my community.

Uh, I'm a native american since I was born in this country. Does it really offend you that some people really don't care for politically correct bullshit phrases?

No, but it does bother me that people use such archaic terms to refer to a people still. And as for your other point, replace Native Americans with Aboriginals People's...my point still stands.

Yeah, I don't really see the appeal of cricket at all. But maybe that's because I was born and raised in the US.

I can't read your post because I can't stand your avatar, it's annoying the hell out of me. That said, going by the little I read and the thread title, I must agree that people shouldn't call Native Americans, Indians.

Native Americans prefer to be referred to as Indians(or so says an anthropology professor who does a lot of work with various tribes in the midwest)

But the rest of the world doesn’t understand the appeal of American Football.

I can't wait to move to Japan eventually. I'm going to so totally blow their minds.

Edit: Having three consecutive posts with my current Avatar is really creepy. Just look at all three in your window.

I blow minds now. Being a "black" (mixed really) and knowing Japanese history better than Japanese people... it is funny when I have conversations about Meiji and WWII... I love it! :D

Yeah, I probably know more about Japanese history than the average Japanese dude. It's going to be fun times in Japan...when I finally finish my undergrad (grumble)

Might be something to that. I noticed my anthropology professor also refers to them as Indians.

How can you call them 'native americans'? It wasn't called America when they lived in it, so all you are doing is rubbing their noses in your colonisalist oppression by forcing them to wear your violent domination of their race around their necks.

They should be called what they want to be called. How about whatever their country was called when they lived there?

.oO(I hope to god those injuns' never called it America or I'm fucked)

The Chinaman is NOT the issue, Cyan! This is about drawing a line in the sand! Over this line, YOU DO NOT... oh, and Chinaman is not the prefered nomenclature. Chinese person, please.

I think natives call america "stolen property". Natives must have had a name for the land, and that name an english translation. Anyways it doesn't mather let them call themself want they want to.

I remember reading how Canada got it's name..no idea if it's true though.

Something about the natives there saying 'aca nada' (nothing here) in broken French or something.

How often do you see other black people in Japan? I know that Japanese society is very homogeneous, and I can imagine it must be pretty strange being a foreigner and sticking out among them; having dark skin would just make it even more apparent. Also, how's your Japanese? It took me a year and a half of Ds in Japanese to realize the language probably isn't for me. :lol

Well, I'm Hispanic (and part Irish and Mohawk), but from a distance I look Japanese. It's always fun walking around downtown in the city I'm in and having people from the strip joints and image clubs try to flag me down and try to tell me to come to their establishment. As soon as they get within 3 feet of me and notice my non-slanted eyes, they shut-up and go back to wence they came. I find it hilarious.

I was reading Foucault's Pendulum and the translator used the word "Amerind," which I guess was the popular phrase for a few years in the 80s. Sounds like an exotic fruit to me.

Don't american indians call themselves 'Innuit'?

No, the Innuit are a tribe, much like the Mohawk, Huron, Souix ect. The actually is no Indian name for America. Various tribes did have names for the land that they were inhabiting. Keep in mind, there were around 500 tribes in the Americas when Columbus arrived all with their own uniqe cultures, speaking a variety of languages.

You're an fool. Australia has single handedly turned cricket from a 'gentleman's sport' to one filled with fan yobbery and players conceit. Tell me this why does Bret Lee ball bouncers to lower end batsmen?

From those cultural commercials they used to show, the natives referred to the village or settlement area as "kanata" which the settlers mistakenly thought referred to the land itself.

I'm an Aussie and don't care much for cricket...but i'm not a sports fan at all.

I will say that gridiron is just for guys who can't take it like a man :lol I mean cmon, do they even feel anything under all that padding? (this is in comparison to our football... rugby not aussie rules)

stupid redneck settlers. Its like when Captain Cook discovered Australia and was asking a native what that jumping animal was. He replied 'I don't know' - which in Aboriginal is 'Kangeroo'.
