Exit and Irregular Hunter X - First Impressions

Just picked up both games today after failing to buy Ryu ga Gotoku. The game is so obscure no one even carries it here.

Irregular Hunter X

I put this one in first, it requires a 2.50 update, so I started the update program only to be told my battery level is too "low". My charger is plugged in. I do not understand this. After failing to get the update started, I give up and up in Exit.

First Impression score: F-

Exit

So out goes Irregular Hunter X and in goes Exit. Exit also requires a 2.50 update. Thanks for nothing Sony. Fuck you.

First Impression score: F-

This really sucks. I'll get better impressions once Sony decides my battery level is high enough to PLAY games I paid for. :(

Oh and the solution is to go back and return both games and tell them they must order and carry this:

For those who don't know, with recent PSP firmware updates you're required to have your battery level at 50% or higher in addition to having your AC adaptor plugged in. I guess Sony is worried about people having AC power failures during firmware updates or something? :lol

While waiting for my PSP to charge, I left PSP on the Game section and the Exit loop started. Holy shit Sho Nuff was right the music ROCKS! :lol

I noticed that they were playing a trailer for Ryu ga Gotoku on the giant screen above the Shibuya Tsutaya today. Seems like they are really trying to push it. Very cool to see it out in the public like that.

I assume it was hard to find as a result of popularity? Hopefully so, as Sega needs this to be a success.

Where did you pick up those PSP games, though? Where are these places that sell games before the "official" release date?

Duck's in Singapore. I doubt the game is sold out anywhere in Japan :\

No, its so UNPOPULAR no store here in Singapore decided to order any stock at all. No one even know what it was until I pointed to a cover of a chinese gaming magazine that was 4 months old and said "THAT GAME GODDAMNIT!". :lol

Asian releases of Japanese games come out on Tues/Wed most of the time, before the Japanese release proper on Thurs/Fri. :D

Hey, i'm in Singapore too.

You can't just take the battery out?

Ok completed the first situation of Exit (10 stages of tutorial) and it opened up all the stages of situations 2-7. The game seems completely free-scenario as in you can play any stage in any order once you clear the requires to open the next set. I guess you need to clear all of situations 2-7 to unlock 8-10. But now I have 60 stages to play that are non-tutorial! YAY!

The tutorials were really simple and basic, and filled with help pop-ups, being a tutorial hater it was kinda annoying, but the game is very slick. Loading is lightning fast and the gameplay is great for 2D sidescrolling adventure fans. The AI is really good and the game actually makes use of the entire "you must use yourself as well as the people you are saving to get everyone out safely" concept really well. The stages are just short enough to make this a very good portable game. :D

Ok, out with Exit in with IHX now, impressions to come....

Did you get these at Gamescore in Funan? Wherever you got them from, did they have more? :D

Ahh, impressive. Can't wait to here the IHX hands-on preview..

Ok since IHX comes with the Rockman Rockman demo on the disc I'll give impressions on both.

Rockman Rockman demo

The demo has Cutman's entire stage available in both Rockman^2 flavor and Original Rockman flavor. Both are still rendered in the same engine so the graphics are still really cutesy and in 3D, but the difference is that Rockman^2 flavor is in full widescreen and has a new remixed placement of many things, and original Rockman is in 4:3 in the exact same design of the original Rockman game.

The graphics are REALLY cute and if you couldn't take Zelda WW you'll probably hate this one too. But if you don't mind it, its pretty awesome. Both the original and the remix feel great and the controls are spot on. When you get to Cutman, there's a short voiced conversation that's added (I presume much more plot will be injected throughout the entire game in the final version) that will change my impression of Cutman forever (for the worse).... >_< His voice is too cute and the entire conversation told me that they're really going hard for the "Saturday Morning Cartoon" feel for the entire game. But that aside, I would say props to Capcom for the remake. I'll be buying it like I intended because it's pretty much what I expected, maybe slightly better. :D

Irregular Hunter X

It's really sad that this game is going to bomb hard because Capcom is spending quite bit on their Rockman/Rockman X remakes on the PSP. The game opens with a solid lengthy anime intro encoded VERY well with a J-rock tune and the game itself opens with another anime FMV, with there being a movie theatre I suspect there are quite a few anime FMVs in this game. The game itself is completely remade in 3D with some pros and cons. The pros are mostly visual as the stages themselves look way better and some enemies (especially the larger ones) are much more impressive. Unfortunately X himself is kinda full of jaggies and its a minor distraction from the game. There's also slowdown when enemies crowd the screen or when you charge your X-buster for a large shot. I hope these don't ruin some of the stages later, but overall loading feels great (developers are getting smarter and I think most of the loading is done when you first power on and done after cutscenes and such, so when you actually go from Enemy Select to the actual stage there's zero loading. I beat the first stage and it feels fine imo. If you liked Rockman X, you'll probably love it. If you didn't like Rockman X, this won't change your mind. It's clearly a remake made for fans and nothing more, but it's a very good token to fans imo. :D

Awesome, thx again Ducky :D !!

Sounds promising. Here's hoping Exit comes stateside, as it's tough buying imports with just GameRush store credit.

Thanks duckroll!

I cleared Situation 2 (Burning Inferno) in Exit and started on Situation 3 (Subway Under Water)... I really like the pacing of the game so far. Each Situation is a completely different type of disaster that you're saving people out of, and each stage is a unique puzzle (or combination of puzzles to a larger puzzle) involving that theme. 10 stages per situation is just right imo. Each stage is averaging about 3-4 minutes now on my best time, and usually it requires a few retries before you "get" it. The game is really suited for travel in that sense, as the stages themselves are bite-sized but complex enough to tease your brain and be fun.

I'm officially declaring Exit to be Flashback x Lemmings. :D

Awesome. I never cared much for the X series after the first one so I will for sure pick this up.

I hope capcom USA fixes the framrate issues(but I'm not counting on it).

Is Exit import friendly? Does the story have big influence on the experience?

EDIT: What is a good webshop that's shipping to Europe? (other than Lik-sang)

Exit is very import-friendly. The story scenes that "introduce" each Situation is a bunch of stills + Japanese text, but they're not really important to the experience at all. They're kinda funny though, it usually starts with Mr ESC saying it's his day off, and he goes hit on some chicks and have coffee with an old friend or something when a building catches fire or the floor collapses or some random shit like that. Then he goes "I WILL SAVE THE DAY!", etc. The game itself is 100% puzzle with the "story" being a background thing.

Played more Irregular Hunter X, beat both Icy Penguigo and Spark Mandriller. I tried to take on Armor Arghwhatshisname but the chase sequence in his stage is impossible without Dash Boots. Anyone remember where they are? ^^;

The framerate does slow down when there's tons of action on screen but I take back what I said about the graphics. They're really really good for a 3D sidescroller remake of Rockman X. :D

You couldn't miss the dash boots in the original. They were in Chill Penguin's stage.

They're physically in your path in the ice cave near the exit. You are forced to walk through Light's Capsule to progress.

By the way, I guess I want a PSP now for Megaman. :-/ Oh well. I'll wait until Daxter is out, first.

Uh, the dash boots are in the Penguin's level. I guess Capcom moved shit around for this remake.

The dash boots were about halfway through the level in a ice-cavern that you climbed upwards.

It was IMPOSSIBLE to miss this. IMPOSSIBLE.

Capcom must have moved it. Check around the stage, I wonder if they would have moved it to another level.

Thanks for the impressions!

Now, where did you get them again? Funan?

They're everywhere. Mega Multimedia, Comics Connection, Seow Choon, Game Score, just about every store on the island got this week's new PSP stock in yesterday. ^^;

Cool, can I assume Seow Choon has the best prices?

Every normal stage and boss except Chill Penguin(only because it's forced on you) is beatable without dash. Man up and do without!

Hint: Get behind the first... well in front of the second.

Are there more screenshots of exit around besides the one Matix posted in his list thread? I haven't seen any others and am curious :(

Sweet! I just asked Brett (from the band I work for) to pick this up for me and he e-mailed me back already saying he grabbed me a copy of EXIT and said he'd be back on the 21st. This downloadable content is like icing on the cake. :) I can't wait to play it when he returns.

*cough*plug*cough* Brett also let me know that the band's xmas CD is finally available in the US from CD Baby. (They're about to sign with a US label, but the deal isn't final, so to get the album for now, at least there's CD Baby :)

Some updated impressiopns on Exit:

I finished Situations 2 and 3, and played the first stage each of 4 to 7. I have to say the game only gets MORE impressive. Each Situation is actually completely unique in the sense that the style of the puzzles and the available items/obstacles actually change. It keeps the game really fresh and the enviroments new. The stages are also getting longer and harder now with more retries per stage as I try different solutions. The downloadable content announced is truly icing on the cake as I expect this game to be a straight A game once I complete it. :D

Now this is what I'm talking about, kick ass :D !!

Are these screenshots of the Japanese version of Exit? So it's got English screentext then? That'd be just fine :D !

And does anybody have soms trailers or ingame footage?

Well, I 'won' Exit on Ebay, but the fucking seller still hasn't sent me an email with the beautiful words: Exit has been shipped, blablabla. Stupid asshole... I want it right now

Okay, I really want this now. Is it supposed to come out in North America? Even if the story isn't that important, I hate to feel like I'm missing something with an import copy.
