EXIT (PSP) Impressions

I downloaded the demo from the PSP kiosk.

First impressions: WOW this game has frickin' good art direction. You're Mr. ESC, an all-black character in a hat and a red scarf (who kinda looks like the Linux Red Hat mascot). Your goal is to save people (by walking over them) and escorting them to the Exit of the level. Graphics are freaking great; it's 2D gameplay but the backgrounds are 3D and definitely have depth and dimension. 2D really does look miraculous on the PSP dammit!

It's kinda like classic Prince of Persia. Your dude can walk around, jump, do running jumps, grab on to ledges, etc. He is not stupid and will not walk off edges (he'll flail his arms).

First level has you pushing crates...cough. Well, it's actually an okay gameplay mechanic, because it's a puzzle platformer after all, so I'll forgive the appearance of crates. You can step on thingies that open doors, pick up items (keys to unlock doors), get fire extinguishers, get rope/ladder sets. At this point you're probably like "Hey, this sounds generic!", but the game actually requires you to interact with the victims and tell them what to do for you to reach the goal.

When you hit the triangle button it brings up a cursor. You can zoom all over the level in this mode. You click on the victim (that you've rescued), and then you click on a space to tell him to go there, or click on a crate or item to tell him to use it or push it. You may also need a victim's strength to push heavy stuff out of your way, together. Best of all, the victims are not retarded and will not fall off edges, and are able to jump and do almost everything you can (not sure about the running jumps though). If you tell them to get somewhere, they WILL get there (actually, one guy took a route that I hadn't thought of).

The game's voices are all in English, and the acting is okay. The victims say weird shit like "Why me?" or "I'm stinky!"...er, yeah. Text appears in English in speech balloons. The background music ROCKS, it's like a cross between orchestral action-movie music and funk; give me the soundtrack! The interface is also awesome and uses old American touch-tone phone sounds (!).

The only problem is that player movement feels VERY SLOW. I would personally make some of the motions (climbing ladders, stepping over crates, turning from left to right, pushing stuff) run at double-speed. There is a time limit for each level -- I didn't come close to running out, but for some of the timed doors and stuff I can see it getting annoying. For some reason, the pacing seemed a little better once I got past the first two tutorial levels (the demo has 4 levels in total), but this is a game that could stand to get a little speed boost.

Anyway, there ya go. Slick and stylish and pretty frickin' cool, but I wouldn't mind it boogieing along a little faster.

Whoop -- actually, the tutorial text is in Japanese, but it should be pretty obvious what you have to do (I just skipped past them because I'm lazy). Everything else is 100% English.

There were also help menus from the option menu that mentioned stuff like elevators, so there's probably a lot of other stuff in the full version.

Thanks for the impressions. I was very curious about this game as it seems to have some pretty solid classic gameplay with a new graphical sheen. A bit disappointing it seems so slow, though. That seems like it'd be a big issue in a game like this.

Uhhh, I couldn't actually tell the frame rate, because the scrolling is so slow -- whether it was 30 or 60, it was extremely smooth and didn't slow down or anything.

You can get it at the Yodobashi in Shinjuku, as far as I know. There are a mess of other demos too, I'll go back to try some more after work.

I wish we could get demo's in the US. I REALLY want to play the MGA2 and loco roco(i think?) demos.

Yeah, assuming devs are willing to whip together demos for the US market, shouldn't it be easy to distribute them through, say, internet? Just download to the mem stick and play...the possibility is there, a shame they're not using it.

Import get...my PSP library is starting to grow lately :)

:)

They had the demo downloadable at Shibuya Tsutaya like the other week. Came back a week later and the whole kiosk setup was gone, I'm like WTF.

The character moved "slow" for me. Animation is smooth though.

What firmware does it need? Is it out now?
Hey, I can't say for certain, but damn near everything these days will not run unless you are using a 2.00. They've totally owned the loaders, for the time being. Hopefully another Humma comes along and saves the day, but for now, there is nothing we can do.

IF developers can deliver a game that actually runs properly and doesn't suffer from extreme loading issues, I don't care, but those loaders really saved the day in a lot of cases. There are PSP games that I would never play from the UMD as they are just don't perform well enough.

I believe there was an exploit using LCS to load unsigned code....They have totally screwed the scene and it's a pitty since the SNES emulator was improving till they began messing with firmwares.
I know PSP!=GP32 but hell...I love to play PSP games (which I buy) but also to play old games from SNES/MD. It's a pitty those 2 things aren't compatible.

Heh, yeah I caught the slow issue back when the trailer was released :

Looks good but I don't like how he's walking...slowly throughout the entire trailer. Seems like it would be a bit slow/tedious if you couldn't move faster than that.

Too bad that they didn't speed it up in the end. I really don't think I'm gonna pick this up unless Play-Asia drops it to $20 in a month or two :\ I don't have much patience for sluggish stuff :(
