Exotic tastes Take the (Moon)cake

" MOONCAKE sellers are over the moon this year, with consumers biting into new - and in some cases, unusual - flavours they have put out to beat the competition.

Hotels and other outlets gunning for a bigger slice of the pie no longer offer just the traditional confection with lotus seed paste, but also unbaked ones with exotic fillings such as kiwi fruit, custard and peanut butter.

These are among the new varieties put out this year to whet the appetite of those celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival, the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, which falls today.

Other recent flavour 'innovations' - some say gimmicks - include mooncakes stuffed with durian- and green tea-based fillings, ice cream, and even low sugar versions of the traditional lotus seed paste.

The wide choice and aggressive marketing have resulted in many shops reporting record sales."

Just give me the original. With lotus seed. That's still the best.

The paste? ick, I never actually liked that one. Too sweet. The one with the nuts, salt eggs, and other mystery stuff was better.

Haha, is it true that you can get mooncakes with up to 6 eggs in them? My dad's business associate always buys those. Apparently they taste really good. But six eggs.. I don't know, that's begging for a heart attack.

LOL wtf. The most I've seen is 4 eggs and I suspect that the rest of the moon cake is pretty unhealthy too.

aren't traditional mooncakes red bean paste rather than lotus paste? Lotus paste is the variant... like white chocolate is to chocolate.

I was told that Lotus was the original. They have white and yellow cakes. The white cakes are Lotus, and the yellow cakes have Brown Sugar. Yellow cakes are more common up here, because it's hard to grow Lotus over here in Vancouver.

Red Bean? I'd like to try that.

"Depending on location, different kinds of filling were used.
In the north - white sugar paste and brown date paste were favorites.
In the south - ham, dates or preserved apricots, walnuts, lard
or watermelon seeds were used. "

Mooncakes can be pretty different, ex: Taiwanese ones don't even look or taste similar to the ones I grew up with. I don't think I've seen a red bean paste one yet.

Really? They were pretty common for me. The lotus one was also pretty common. I've also had some of the random nut/fruit ones. I like them all :p

Sticky rice is called glutinous rice.

I think they use dried lotus seeds.

I prefer eating the dough part than the filling. We got those little mini mooncakes which doesn't have filling, yummy.
Though sometimes they can be hard as a rock if over-baked. ;)

Durian Mooncake tastes like fucking ass.
Made me throw up a couple years ago..

You can't go wrong with durian. Even the "crunchy durian" (apparently dried but not shriveled) tastes good.

I've never actually had durian the fruit, but I had a mooncake today made with durian and green bean with an egg. It was pretty good, didn't taste bad at all and didn't smell either. What's durian proper smell and taste like?

It tastes and smells good. It's like describing what an apple tastes like---pretty hard.

Well, durian has a creamy texture and kind of a musty fruity flavor/smell.

Durian only smells bad to the people who don't like the smell.

I just got a Durian recently out of curiousity...Let me tell you, it is the worst smelling thing I've ever inhaled short of rotting flesh. Seriously. I threw up almost instantly when trying to suck down a piece of that nasty ass crap. Fuck Durian. "Fuck Moon Cake".

You must live in an oder-sheltered world to think that durian is just below rotting flesh.

Sure. I suppose if I lived in raw sewage it wouldn't bother me. Where do you live?

 Then you must just have weird sense of smell to be able to live in raw sewage.

I live in the suburbs.

My Taiwanese friend tells me that durian smells like shit, literally, but that it tastes really good if the smell doesn't bother you, some poeple can eat it and some people can't, she's one of those that can. I'm not sure I could stomach it.

I LOVE durian! *drools* :D

I only like the actual fruit though; anything artificially flavoured with durian is shit. I think I saw one time on Fear Factor (?) where they made the contestants drink a mixed drink with several ingredients and one of which was durian. When I saw that I was saying to myself, "wtf? I would eat durian even if I didn't get paid!" :p

PS: The smell is not that bad.

Yeah, durian flavored cakes and pastries aren't so great, esp since many of them use artificial flavoring.

Gah now I crave the stuff, but all I have right now are cans of crispy durian. The moist, soft texture just isnt there.
