Experience With Temp Jobs?

Not expecting anything great but would like to read some GAF's experience dealing with this. Haven't had much luck in terms of finding jobs and might take this route. Is it worth looking into?

I'm on my 3rd temp job, first paid huge, 2nd paid decent, current pays like first. I'm working in the customer service department @ Wachovia. M-F 8-5

When I moved to Chicago I decided to try a temp job while I looked for something permanent in the field I was expecting to get a job in it. My 2nd place (first was just data entry for one day) in a completely different industry ended up permanent and I'm here still 2 years later in August.

Meier, what agency did you use?

I would highly recommend applying to several temp agencies. Get as many agencies representing you as possible. They don't get paid unless you're working, so it's in their best interest to place you ASAP. If you go through a reputable agency you can often find a pretty decent job. The staffing agency I used here in Chicago when I was temping has ended up placing several of my friends in fairly lucrative full time positions. One of my friends ended up getting a full time position as the personal assistant for one of the richest women in the city. If you can prove you're a hard worker and reliable, they can usually place you in a decent paying, semi-permanent position, at least after a couple of months. It might be different with the current job market being so dire, but that's how it was a couple of years ago.

Well with out a temp job, I wouldn't have landed a permant job (I'm horrible in interviews).
I've been doing well ever since then.

I did temp work for years and years. I thought it was great. Don't work when you don't want to; the pay could vary widely, but I got a plenty of big-paying gigs; great way to meet people; often leads to permanent work. The work can be boring, but if you don't like your assignment it's pretty easy to get another.

The work tends to be boring (as is anything that's not really taking place in a field you adore) but I've gotten some pretty high paying assignments and some permanent opportunities later on for some pretty respectable companies.

Around Christmas of last year I'd feel comfortable finding anything in the IT field for great pay but ever since the economy hit the shitter I've found the route to be a little less desirable.

Ive worked plenty of temp jobs doing construction since jobs boom in the summertime out on the road. Ive had all good experiences with them since I get to leave town for a few months and make tons of money. Plus it helps me not spend as much money since im out of town working the entire time. If you can make decent money why not take a temp job? While you are working that job you can be trying to find something more long term.

How does a temp agency work? Do you get to pick the job you want from what's available, or do they do it for you? I always thought it would be cool to spend time trying different kinds of jobs just to see if something clicks with me beyond stacking boxes.

i worked a temp job, incidentally enough it was stacking boxes at a warehouse and pushing pallets around. Sucked and the temp agency would take $2 an hour out of my pay checks.

:lol served

I like my job at the grocery well enough, but it's at night and I don't sleep much, so I've been kicking around the idea of a second job. But not if it's the same kind of work. If I could do something at least slightly different, I'd be interested for sure.

i've had two short-term temp jobs, one for maybe three weeks, and another for a month or so. it was all assembly-line factory type stuff, putting a certain sticker on the side a box as it rolls past (actually kinda hard considering how fast those goddamn boxes came at you, the backing of the stickers was a bitch to remove and if you couldnt rip it off quick you fell behind and got yelled at), the second one was peeling vinyl off of silk-screen images, much easier and my supervisor had one arm but could still peel faster than anyone when he needed to. dont expect to get any thought-provoking work

Yeah I did one under a temp agency, they just had us install OS and drivers on laptops for government agencies for about a month or so. Did another one that's similar, but for a recruitment company for like a week. Boring as hell, but times were tough for me back then without any leads for a new job, and it was good money for me.

My life, 3 jobs, all been temp jobs...

Sucks trying to find full-time employment but temp jobs are pretty good, the ones I did were office based and it mainly involved data entry, office admin stuff etc.. very simple stuff. I was with a very good company just last week til they didn't want temp workers any more, they woul have kept us on if it wasn't for the financial crisis.
