How to be a Goth:

1. Go to Hot Topic.
2. Buy anything there.
3. Go home. You are now a goth.

Really:

The whole goth thing stems from progressive music in the late '70s early '80s. The more morose of Britains punks, folks who listened to The Smiths, Joy Division, Bauhaus, etc. turned the punk look down a notch and the look was born.

Fast-forward twenty years, filter the movement through Depech Mode reunions, Jonen Vazquez and lazer-focused shopping mall marketing and you have the modern day goth.

Shorthand:

It's just one of the zillion ways for outcast kids to cope with the hell that is high-school. Whatever.

Then you're not meant to. Either you understand, or you don't.

Well, I was already under the impression that it was a way for kids to justify laziness and/or social disorders, under the guise of "being different" or "misunderstood", so that doesn't help.

I'm trying to figure out how, if they're all so worried about being different, why they don't cannibalize each other for all being so similar.

goth=morons who think they are being anti-corporate and anti-trendy by wearing all black and shit, when in reality being goth is just as trendy as shopping at abercrombie and fitch.

what is goth though?
for a recent party i wore a bit of makeup, some eyeliner and lipstick and everybody thought it was very pretty.
goth = the style or the ideology, what are you reffering to?

It's too soon since the last "goth" thread to retread through all this again :lol

To truncate things, goth as a style of music and as a subculture are both very difficult to nail down. I've never really seen it as a scene focused on being unique or "anti-corporate" (WTF?), but plenty will construe it as such (see previous replies).

Yeah, pity that a great band like Joy Division is partly responsible for the shiteness that's goth...but ah well, what can you do. Ian Curtis am cry. =(

Our only source for early Gothic history is Jordanes' Getica, (published 551), a condensation of the lost twelve-volume history of the Goths written in Italy by Cassiodorus. Jordanes may not even have had the work at hand to consult from, and this early information should be treated with the highest degree of caution. Cassiodorus was well placed to write of Goths, for he was an essential minister of Theodoric the Great, who apparently had heard some of the Gothic songs that told of their traditional origins, related in turn by Jordanes with the remark "for so the story is generally told in their early songs, in almost historic fashion." The Gothic bards accompanied themselves on a stringed instrument that Latin writers associated with the cithara, which was more familiar to them.

They were settled for some time in the Vistula Basin (called Gothiscandza by Jordanes), from where they migrated towards the south-east. They battled with, and temporarily subjugated, the ancestors of the Slavs (there were many Gothic loanwords in proto-Slavic), who lived between the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea and ultimately settled in 'Scythia' a vast undefined region that includes modern Ukraine and Belarus (called Oium by Jordanes). A united tribe until the third century, it was during that period that they split into the eastern Goths or Ostrogoths and the western Goths or Visigoths.

Though many of the fighting nomads who followed them were to prove more bloody, the Goths were feared because the captives they took in battle were sacrificed to their god of war, Tyz [1] (http://www.northvegr.org/lore/grimmst/009_03.php)(the one-armed Tyr), and the captured arms hung in trees as a token-offering. Their kings and priests came from a separate aristocracy, according to Cassiodorus/Jordanes, and their mythic kings of ancient times were honored as gods. Their mythic lawgiver, named Dicineus, traditionally dated about the 1st century BC, ordered their laws, which they possessed by the 6th century in written form and called belagines.

A force of Goths launched one of the first major "barbarian" invasions of the Roman Empire in 267. A year later, they suffered a devastating defeat at the Battle of Naissus and were driven back across the Danube River by 271. This group then settled on the other side of the Danube from Roman territory and established an independent kingdom centered on the abandoned Roman province of Dacia, as the Visigoths. In the meantime, the Goths still in Ukraine established a vast and powerful kingdom along the Black Sea. This group became known as the Ostrogoths.

The Goths were briefly reunited under one crown in the early sixth century under the Ostrogothic king Theodoric the Great, who became regent of the Visigothic kingdom for nearly two decades

Hot Topic has a shirt that says "Anti-Crombie."

But in reality, isn't Hot Topic owned by those who own Abercrombie as well?

Of course. I have no idea if the actual owners are the same, but the mentality is identical. If you are truly anti-abercrombie, you'd be anti-hot topic as well. You'd just go buy your clothes at walmart or target and look like a normal person, rather than trying to fit into some hip/outcast/elite/edgy group.

Hot Topic sells a ridiculous black shirt that says, "You laugh at me because I'm different, but I laugh at you because you're all the same." What the hell is that crap? I work next door to a Hot Topic. Do you know how many identical looking goths I've seen? How many people wearing that exact shirt? At least the Abercrombie people aren't pretending to be unique and different.

Haha, yah basically. I'm still in Highschool and I talk with a bunch of Goth people and I bring that shit up all the time, specifically that shirt. The reaction is always the same... they don't really say much of anything.

But let me just say that for every hot goth chick there's probably about 10 ugly ones. I mean man, some of these goth chicks are disgusting, especially since their attire involves tight leather skirts and black tank tops. Some girls can get away with it, most can't.

With that in mind, a hot got chick and her sister (also goth) just moved in next door. They go to my school as well, I really can't wait to bang one of them

Like any subculture or fandom, there will always be a small core of people who actually put some form of substance into it. Surrounding them there will be a huge crowd of wannabe types who want to get in on something "empowering" and/or "cool" without really doing any work or putting out any effort to do something meaningful. Most people who aren't in a given subculture may sneer at it and write it off as nothing but the surface layer of froth that's visible. Way it goes.

I'm no goth but I've known some people who could be considered "gothic" in the modern subculture sense. The best way I can easily explain the general feeling I got from them, is that it isn't about depressed poetry or Crow makeup. Those elements are merely tools, and properly are only used in strategic times and places where they can become an authentic artistic statement - the fangoths though just latch onto all that as the primary point and will never realize there's anything else to it.

The sense I've gotten of "goth" is that it's about exploring the darker or sobering side of the world in a way that could be seen as theatrical; turning that exploration into a performance art (making life that art) to deal with those feelings and that part of life. Honestly, it's better than lazing around just saying "life sucks" a lot - which ironically is largely what a lot of the wannabe goths do, as they just don't get the point.

Ultimately it's just another form of expression and dealing with the world. Owing to Sturgeon's Law, 90% of it may be crap as with everything else. And of course, we all like to laugh at everybody else's crap quotient as if we don't have any of our own.

I think we (I) need some Olimario-style proof of such a bold claim.
