Extreme Makeover Home Edition 05/01 - Made me teary eyed

I've been watching this episode of Extreme Makeover Home Edition featuring a local man who had been shot working his second job (police found no reason for the shooting - just senseless violence) and blinded. The local ABC affiliate had an hour long pre-show where they gave the family a car (some type of Buick). That was great, but then the actual show started, and man, it was tough to fight back some of the tears.

It was just rough to see how upbeat this guy was, despite the fact he had lost his sight and had trouble just navigating his house. The producers really picked a deserving family and did a ton of great stuff to help the man adjust to being blind. They added textures to all of the rooms so he could tell where he was by touch, made different pathways through the house with carpet and hard floors. Then the made it a smart house, allowing to control almost every aspect of the house with his voice. He can answer the phone, send email, control the fireplace, and secure the home all with his voice. Just some great technology to help him out.

Then the also got him a guide dog too, and the contractors gave the family $100,00. Gosh, for all the crap reality shows that are on TV, there's at least one that really helps people.

Come to think of it, how does getting a guide dog work? Wouldn't the guy's insurance pay for some of the stuff the show did for him, assuming he had some?

Too bad some of these home makeover shows don't cover the taxes of the makeover gift. Was reading an article at cnn or somewhere a month ago about some family that got stuck with a $100,000 tax bill after some show did a $600,000 renovation or something. Guess it's related to how you have to pay taxes on lottery winnings and such.

Well, Extreme Makeover Home Edition gets away with it by renting the house for 7 days from the owners. The big bill comes with the extra heating/cooling/electric/water/house tax.

Just to let you guys know, that ABC gave all of this past seasons winners a full years payed appliance/waste/heating/water bill. So its not all that bad. But home owners insurance is all on the winner. Which in some of these houses, especially those with large square footage can make things really bad for these families. But ABC has been nice and have made right on what they've done. By helping most all of the families out on those problems.

TY was talking about all of these things a few weeks ago on a local radio show. It was really nice to know House Destruction hour really does have a heart. They dont just build and leave you. He talked about how he went back on his own time to one of the families homes to help them out on some gardening and some other stuff.

They even shot a short video of him cleaning up one of the homes as a surprise for the family. It sounded funny.

I like this show, its deffinatly better than most of the shows on.

It's an alright show, but I hate how every damn episode feels incredibly staged with those 'OMG WE WONT BE ABLE TO BUILD THE HOUSE IN TIME WE ARE 2 DAYS LATE OMGOGMGOM" at least twice an episode, and how everyone has to cry all the time.

And that TY guy is always running around screaming. Does he actually works on the house?

Sounds like a nice story but you should have cried instead of just coming close, you heartless bastard.

Thats a pretty nice thing to do for someone. haha.

What I am gettting at is more of the mind set behind it. Its just kind of disgusting to me.

"Lets go find ppl with problems, put them on TV so the chunk of america who has similar problems can relate with them, and then feel worse about thier life when they see thier house is shitty and some show will never save them. In the end we will make a lot of moeny and increase our viewer base."

A lot of TV is like this these days and its just kind of STRANGE to me. haha.

Like that have that MTV show MADE where they put these retarded kids on TV and make a show aobut how they are hopeless.

Only show I give a big thumbs up to is pimp my ride. Those guys really know how to make some g-rides. I dont care if they are xploiting stupid college kids, putting a DJ set up in some dudes trunk is TOO TRILL! lol

Can't believe anyone would dis Extreme Makeover Home Edition. I mean, the show is something positive and they help people really in need. If the show wasn't on TV, I am thinking that they wouldn't be able to pay for the work they do. It is one absolutely positive show on TV.

Not that I have watched more than a handful of episodes.

Well, just like anything else, it's not all bad and all good. I'm just saying the whole concept is a little werid. Give someone a house so you can present to the entire USA how shitty thier life is. :p

I do question what happens after the show. They should make a spin off show called XTREME MAKEOVER: 3 yrz later. Show how the house is holding up and see if the kids burned down the tree house by then or whatever.

Actually, on this episode they finished two days ahead of schedule with the construction. :D

Ty does a lot of work on one room. He picks a certain room and gives it his special touch.
